Are The 49Ers The New Jets?

14 posts in this topic

So I was doing a little pregame research on the 9ers, and well, they're sure sold on their new outspoken head coach and questionable quarterback. The 9ers have also begun a mentality of "physical, defensive football", which is a brand that usually belongs to the Steelers and Ravens. And we've all seen what happens when teams think they can live up to the Steelers and Ravens physicality. 34-17 happens.

The 9ers are definitely a threat this year, and a great team. Sudden success on defense and running the ball has gotten fans excited about their team. But are they the next Jets? Could unrealistic expectations and a Raven/Steeler mentality make the 49ers into what the Jets were these past few years? A free-agent frenzied team that ultimately disappoints its fans? Or are they for real?

49ers > Jets

They're more physical and stand more of a chance imo. I also like San Fran better than NYJ, so I hope no one would consider them our rivals.

Im not sure what you mean by free-agent frenzied team. Niners have built most of their team from the draft. They definitely seem to be adopting the Ravens/Steelers style of physical smash-mouth football. They do have some great players along their front 7 and a physical Oline too. I'm not sure if it will translate into success because they havent really played any elite teams yet. How they play against the Ravens and Steelers will tell us a lot IMO.

The Jets got a lot of free agents because the players wanted to play for their coach. Jim Harbaugh is a similarly likeable coach to Rex Ryan and the 49ers are a good team. So they could attract free agents. I'm just asking opinions on if that could happen.

They have played some good teams though. Detroit and the Giants are top-10.

The 49ers are for real I assure you.

That front 7 on defense might be the best in the NFL. They literally have 3 players who have a legit shot at DPOTY.

And Harbs is no Rex Ryan. That hand shake moment was a bad one, but its not like hes guaranteeing SB's.

Alex Smith will never be an elite QB, but hes more than good enough to win a SB with all the talent surrounding him. He is also no Sanchez. Smith doesn't lose you games, and when asked, hes actually won them a couple of huge games. (Detroit and NYG)

Well I didn't mean the 9ers are all-hype, and I didn't say that about the Jets either. Both are/were good teams (obviously the 9ers have a better record now than the Jets did). But I'm talking about down the road. Could the 9ers fans develop unrealistic expectations about their team (are they trying to be something they're not) or are they the team the Jets were trying to be?

I do think the 49ers are good, but there are parallels to the Jets. Unquestioned faith in a young head coach and mediocre QB, good O-line, good defense, good running game. Should we expect media hype to follow?

I'm not exactly sure what you're implying.

The 49ers have SB talent. Those wouldn't be unrealistic expectations. I'd say Smith is an average QB, who you could win a SB with because he doesn't lose you games, and has been clutch when called upon. Smith will only get better with a training camp, and more time with Jim.

They also have that young QB they drafted. Jim is excellent at developing QB's, so even if Smith fails they have a good #2 option.

I don't think so. Mainly because the Jets never had a lot of young talent playing well for them. Just a bunch of veterans that played a solid game. Now that they got rid of most of those veterans, they are struggling. The 49ers are in a position to maintain a good team for a while.

The 49ers are better than the Jets are/were in all of those areas, except O line and maybe running game, but their line is still pretty young and should improve with more experience down the road. Parallels maybe, but they're marginally better.

Also, I think now that Rex has been a HC for a couple of years now, his swag and hard nosed style are wearing off. Perception is that he's a really good HC, but I think he was drastically overhyped.

In their division and conference a "Jets-like" team could do very well.

lol per Aaron Wilson's twitter

"Jets signed OT Austin Howard off Ravens' practice squad, according to his agent, Kevin Robinson"

The Jets just can never get enough of us

I have a lot more respect for the 49ers than I do the Jets. They're a classy organization and have classy players. And I think Smith is better than Sancheese.
