Torrey Smith's Future

44 posts in this topic

My favorite thing about Torrey Smith, he's humble. He has the right attitude and I just can't get enough of that. He's willing to work hard and it would have been nice to see him run that slant in for a TD. Of course that thug Pacman tackled him by the hair.

A big deal was made out of Torrey Smith's 40 time being slower than expected at the NFL Combine (official times were a couple hundredths of a second over 4.4), however two important factors were ignored there. One is that track speed is not a perfect measure of speed on the field. Some people said that Ray Rice does not have the straight line speed to be a full time back, but I don't see him getting run down a whole lot. The other is that Torrey was running with stomach cramps which slowed him down, so he could have run the 40 faster.

40 times are useful. But they aren't the end all be all of speed in WRs. I'd rather base that on what I see on the field on game days.

Ray Rice gets tracked down from behind a lot. He's been getting tackled from behind a lot on screen passes this season and that's not even mentioning his long run on Sunday that he couldn't complete. He doesn't have elite straight-line speed but he doesn't need to because he's so agile.

I don't think Smith is outrageously fast, not in the Mike Wallace / DeSean Jackson / old-school Randy Moss class. He's pretty fast but what makes him a good deep receiver, in my opinion, is his excellent body control and adjustments to the football.

I agree, Ray Rice gets caught VERY often from behind, he really needs to improve that. Willis McGahee, not known for speed almost never got caught from behind. Rice needs to lean up a bit more IMO. Even RL52 was dogging Rice about it...hahah!

I think you're down playing his speed a bit. He runs past guys all the time... Not because of his body control or adjustment to the ball... but his SPEED. The things you mentioned don't put 3-4+ yards on DB's. He has an extra gear, when he explodes he wont be caught from behind ( Unless by the hair).

Don't get me wrong, he's fast but not top-end best-in-the-league kind of fast. That Rams game where he exploded there was one pass that was a little in front of him but he closed the gap with an incredible last 2-3 strides. Looked like he had rockets on his cleats. The guy has speed, no doubt about it, but his body control / adjustments make him different than some of the other speedy WRs we've seen around here.

Torrey was the one that I wanted while I watched the mock draft boards long before the draft. He possesses the speed of Wallace to offset the Steelers. He needs to be more sure handed on the short routes before people start comparing him to Jerry Rice or James Lofton. I am highly impressed by his toughness and poise under pressure.

People start comparing him to Moss and we might just see Smith getting jammed and doubled from here on out. It will open up everybody else but the other team does not want to lose the type of yardage he has been gaining per catch. Thats where the routes come into play. If he can get them perfected then he can be a threat anywhere on the field not just in the endzone. I cant wait for that to come.

I dont think it will get any easier for Torrey though in years to come. More film and experience playing against him is gonna make it harder for him in the future. Right now no one expected him to do these things. Hes gaining respect by the game and with respect comes schemes to take you out of a game. Lucky for us we have more then just 1 weapon so you really cant triple team a guy like they have done to Moss because there is no one else to go to.

If the Bengals weren't already scheming for Torrey, Zimmer needs to be fired immediately.

So I'll be the first to admit I had a major man crush on Baldwin, and was crushed when the Chiefs took him in the first. But Torrey is just too beastly man. He's doing, and doing it and doing it well.

Torrey Smith another Virginia product. Tell Eric Decosta and the crew, to start scouting in Va, and we will always be on top.
