Torrey Smith's Future

44 posts in this topic

I know we all love posts about our ultra-talented WR and thinking about how his future will be, but back to the topic.

What do you guys think? I keep hearing reports from analysts talking about what a find we got and how great this kid will be, hell i've had Steeler friends telling me they're scared of this kid. If Flacco and Smith develop shades of a Randy Moss/Tom Brady chemistry circa 2007, we have a future all-pro (I can't wait till this dudes in his prime) I think he'll be known in his prime as the fastest WR in the league, and he'll be averaging close to 20ish YPC which is surreal. If Dickson/Pitta turn into studs and RR keeps doing what he does, i think we'll have one of the best O's for years to come. Just my 2 cents.

Well, Torrey is on pace to put up similar numbers to Marvin Harrison in his rookie season, except that I think Harrison started all of his games. Torrey needs to learn a bit more about route running, and he definitely needs to get in better synch with Joe, but that will come with time. He's only 22, and he's already tasted what some of the best defenses in the NFL have to offer and done well. As far as how good our offense can be, I will say this: it will only ever be as good as our offensive line, and our offensive scheme make it. (i.e. as good as Torrey is now, I think he can be even better in the WCO).

If Cameron finds him ways to get him the ball like he did on Sunday theres no reason he wont be one of the best WRs in the league in his prime. But we know Cameron...

he has to catch more passes in traffic and become more polished running routes but he has potential to become very good and he has a qb who can throw the deep ball only time will tell.

Torrey had a 4.4 40-yd dash in the combine , I believe , which is fast but not exceptional for top WR candidates. IMO , what people missed , and caused him to be drafted lower than he should have been , was his afterburner speed , which truly is exceptional. The burst speed he often shows at the end of a 30-yd pass route dash is otherworldly.

I got a kick out of one his last postgame interviews , where he told us about the coaches explaining to him how rare it is to beat coverage in the NFL. LOL! He thought what he was doing was normal , and they had to make sure he knew how important that ability was , and that he had to be prepared for plays to come his way every time he got that separation.

I think the sky's the limit for him if he's coached well , because he seems to be receptive to suggestions about ways to get better , and recognizes that he has a lot to learn. Like Harbs said , it's hard to be hard on Torrey , because he's so hard on himself.

Nothing is more exciting than a long bomb that connects , and we might now have not one , but two guys that can provide that kind of excitement with some regularity. For me , at least , this is the best of times to be a Ravens fan. Even Cam can't poop this party once it gets going.

Cam Cameron wants to know if that's a challenge.

I love Torrey! Starting to think he was a steal in the second. He really could be something special. For some reason, I see him as a Roddy White type guy once he really gets rolling.

If your hair looked like that yesterday, Torrey, I wouldn't have had to tear my hair out at the end of that game.

Awesome. I knew he could dunk , but hadn't seen that. Thanks , that's going in the vault.

We've got to put that leaping ability to good use , just like his speed. CBs that are six inches taller than him will be dumbstruck when he outjumps them for a high ball.

Could come in handy for a desperation ' Hail Mary ' play , too .......

We need to keep him and not let him go. We have never had a wide receiver like him. I can't wait to see him develop even more.

Didn't know Torrey had hops like that. Not going to lie, I wanted Hankerson, Baldwin or some other wr I can't remember now. I don't watch college much but thought we reached to get him cause he was a home town player. I'M AN IDIOT(but in my defense Ozzie has missed ex Demetrius Williams over Brandon Marshall). My friend keeps asking how dbs keep letting him get past him but his speed is deceptive and he breaks away when they allow him to get even with them. Not only that but I don't know if I'm the only one that notices he seems to catch more with his hands when running shorter routes but more with his body on end zone passes. Could be wrong. Regardless GREAT pick up.

I'd have to end it all if I ever found out that Cam's reading of my post inspired him to scale new depths of incompetence. The shame would be unbearable.

Still , I'm not going to let him push me around. I refuse to delete !

Game on !!

Your move , Cameron !!

I know it doesnt mean anything, but last night during halftime of the Giants-Eagles SNF game, Tony Dungy and the guys were going over the highlights of yesterday's games, including the Ravens-Bengals game. As they showed Torrey's TD catch, one of them remarked, "This guy may be the fastest receiver in the NFL," or something to that effect. Again, I know it doesnt mean anything, but it sure felt good to hear them say that!

Yes , it did feel good , even though it's probably not true in the conventional sense. I think a few other guys would beat him on the track , but when a ball is in the air , coming in his direction , I think he is the fastest. I think he gets a shot of adrenaline or nitrous oxide or whatever , that he has no conscious control over. It's just built into his motor. It might be a mistake if coaches see that and think it means he's not running as fast as he can on the route. As long as he beats his man , there's nothing wrong with him using the second gear if needed at the end.

He def needs the right coaching and we can clearly see he is getting it. After the game he said he was told by mutliple coaches and ozzie to see the ball in his hands all the way through. I don't believe he had any drops this game (correct me if I am wrong) and that is a HUGE improvement.I'm glad he is working on his routes too, good to see him catch some slants and outs and that post (the td pass) was a perfect cover 2 breaker, he froze the saftey completely.

Torrey did run a 4.4 in the combine and i believe desean and mike wallace both ran in the 4.3s, so i don't think he is the fastest wr in the game BUT he gets that last second burst to get seperation, it feels like almost every time flacco goes to smith deep he always has a step on his man. Torrey is a type of reciever we have never had on our team and that's why i wanted him over john baldwin and leonard hankerson. I think torrey's future is having the most recs. rec yards and tds in franchise history

" I think torrey's future is having the most recs..recp yards and tds in franchise history "

I could live with that.

You're right about Sun. He had 6 catches out of 7 targets , and Joe missed him pretty badly on the one. I even see a positive in the two plays he got penalties on that brought back the big runs by Rice. In both cases , his instinct was to make sure he blocked his man , and both times his man was in a position to kill the play. He'll have to learn what he can get away with and what he can't , but you gotta love the aggressiveness he showed as a blocker.

If he keeps improving at the same rate he has so far , he'll be a force to be reckoned with come playoff time.

Still inconsistent although he had a great game on Sunday. The ups and downs are to be expected from a rookie, I just hope he's left the drops and mental errors behind him.

One thing about Torrey i've seen is almost no corners are fast enough to play him tight on the line and get a jam, yet Torrey has this ability to run right at the corner full speed before making a cut that leaves the corner flat footed for a split second...once he's by the corner (and correct me if i'm wrong) but i cant name a safety in the nfl who can turn and run with a wide receiver at full speed who runs a 4.4 and has that final burst torrey has. While his route tree is a little raw, he really does know how to freeze secondary players to get by them. It also helps hes 6 foot 1 and seems to be a pretty strong guy in only his rookie season

I just like that we have a guy that cannot be stuck deep. I don't care what anyone says. He was storming Revis island. Revis held him like hell though

I wish Flacco had been able to hit him deep once or twice. Being able to beat Revis wouldve looked really good on Sunday Night Football...

the thing I want to mention is this kids recovery and burst time , dude tied Driver for fastest burst ever on the 40 at 1.48 the kids recovery ability lets him lul dbs to sleep , if he can perfect that man this kid will blow the lid off most Ds , my biggest things with him is if him laquan and doss get to their max level joe will have a hard time making them happy on catches all 3 could be something special but I think even moss would tip his hat to torrey kid is tough as nails and faster then a speeding japanese moped too boot

Ray Lewis and Ray Rice, wouldnt let the Ravens become a team about them selfs, its a team, and i doubt Ozzie or John for that matter would keep a guy about himself,Flacco said it him self he doesnt favor any WR,its a team effort thats how it should be

A big deal was made out of Torrey Smith's 40 time being slower than expected at the NFL Combine (official times were a couple hundredths of a second over 4.4), however two important factors were ignored there. One is that track speed is not a perfect measure of speed on the field. Some people said that Ray Rice does not have the straight line speed to be a full time back, but I don't see him getting run down a whole lot. The other is that Torrey was running with stomach cramps which slowed him down, so he could have run the 40 faster.

For comparison, Julio Jones had one of the best 40 times at the Combine this past year, but I don't think anyone doubted that both Smith and Green, and maybe a few other WRs in the draft, were faster than him. Though he was a workout warrior at the Combine, and he has been a legitimately excellent rookie WR, his raw speed is not super. He's fast enough, but not blazing at a Raiders' WR level.

40 times are useful. But they aren't the end all be all of speed in WRs. I'd rather base that on what I see on the field on game days.
