Torrey Smith Vs. Mike Wallace

66 posts in this topic

A few years ago, I saw this prospect at the combine by the name of Mike Wallace. I saw something I really liked about him besides his speed and his cool mohawk. I wanted the ravens to take a shot on him in the mid rounds of the draft and I was pretty bummed when I saw that the Steelers had drafted him. Torrey Smith, on the other hand was the opposite for me. I was really hoping to see Titus Young or Leonard Hankerson in purple over Torrey Smith. I have happily eaten my big bowl of crow!

With that being said, there are comparisons being drawn from experts and other people between Wallace and Smith. Although both are burners and can beat any corner in the league(Yes including Revis, considering Smith beat him many times during the Jets game), Wallace's burst comes off of the line while Torrey Smith accelerates past the defender and gains separation when the ball is thrown. Smith reminds me a lot of Wallace, tho. When Mike Wallace started out as a rookie, his route tree wasn't as polished as it should have been, and he was also very inconsistent. Wallace came on a few weeks into the season, developed better routes, and put together a solid rookie season. Smith has been inconsistent, but has improved his game and route running ability.

Mike Wallace Rookie Season: GP REC YDS AVG LNG TD FD FUM LST 16 39 756 19.4 60 6 28 1 1

Smith already has 29 receptions, 590 yards, and 5 touchdowns, averaging 20.3 yards a reception. With 10 games to go, and Smith vastly improving, He is on pace to surpass Wallace's rookie season and also pass Julio Jones as the 2nd most productive rookie wide receiver behind AJ Green.

I'm just glad this team is getting production out of a young WR.

The comparisons to Wallace will come but there's little in them. Wallace is bit more explosive and a tick faster than Torrey but I think Torrey can become the more complete WR.

We'll see what happens. Mike Wallace is an absolute beast. I could care less if Torrey surpasses Wallace's rookie season, as long as he has a better career.

There are a few differences to Torrey and Mike Wallace. I think it is true about where their speed comes in. It's not the first I heard of it and my eyes tell me that Torrey accelerates later in his deep routes than Wallace. I'm not so sure that Wallace is faster as it has been said that Torrey was clocked at 4.3 at the combine on a sore ankle. Not sure if it's true though. But in game speed tells me that Torrey might be faster. No one seems to be able to really run with Torrey.

But the differences are that Torrey is bigger than Mike and probably stronger. I think that Torrey is a bit more physical and that Mike relies simply on speed. Not saying Torrey is better yet but I think he might be in the future.

Its something about Torrey coming from UM that really makes me like him. Wallace is a great reciever no dout, but he is only a burner. Learning from Q how to run routes Torrey will develop great route skills and be an all around WR

Six games to go, unless your talking post-season but in that case it would be 9 ;)

Well, wouldn't it be nice if Torrey and Q had 1000 yards this season? They're both on pace for it.

And Rice is on pace for 1000 yards rushing. As inconsistent as we have been, this is probably the best Ravens offense we've ever had.

I feel like Smith is better than Wallace. Not just because Wallace is a Steeler, but because of the way he just never gives up. We all saw him against the Steelers a few weeks ago.. If he dropped a ball or got a penalty, he would keep on going. He did that, and that's how we won. He has great potential and will amount to more than Mike Wallace will ever be.

Hope that's true but Damn... Did Mike Wallace smash your girl? You seem a little bitter. He's not as bad you make him out to be, football wise. Now if you said Desean Jackson, sure.

I don't know about that actually. Game speed is different than 40 speed. Torrey looks just fast if not faster than Wallace. Wallace has better hands and routes.. but Torrey is right on par with him in the speed category if you ask me. Wallace might accelerate better but i give the agility to torrey.

I actually wonder about Torrey's hands. He's show the ability to make a lot of great catches, so it's more that they're inconsistent. But more importantly, he's said a few times that the ball has come to him at a pace he didn't expect. So maybe his drops are also a product of him just not knowing the kind of darts Joe's throwing his way.

The constant show boating, taunting, missed practices (not just this past week) and overall demeanor just don't show well for him!

As long as I live, I will never forget that Monday night game at Dallas where he dropped the ball at the one yard line then did that dance in the endzone before someone had to tell him he didn't score.

I can only imagine how this offense would perform if we had a competent OC.

i couldn' care less about who of those two is faster. they are both more than fast enough for what they are doing. they are in a group with about 10 other players that do have such speed. i don't think that anybody can run with them on a deep route.

for me, smith has the bigger looking body. if he could add fife or ten pounds without losing his speed he would be a pure monster. wallace is more of a sticky guy. not as much as jackson but a lot thinner than smith. torrey is very strong also. not andre or Q strong but strong enough to play receiver in the nfl.

we just have to find one or two other guys like him and we will be set for the future. hope we see a little of doss this year. don't understand why he doesn't play, yet.

that's the thing i am a little jealous about the bengals. they have so much great young players on their team on booths sides of the ball. they scare me more about the future than the steelers do to be honest...

Mike Wallace's speed seems more like something he maintains through the full route, whereas Torrey Smith really accelerates hard in the latter portion of his routes. I would say Torrey is a bit faster at full burst, but both are plenty fast.

Ultimately, I think I'm happier with Torrey than I would be with Mike Wallace. Maybe it's his dedication, his willingness to block, or just the fact that he's a local product who happens to look like he's gonna be the best receiver the Ravens have ever had, but I love the guy.

wallace is a better receiver in a system with a quarterback that suits his strengths perfectly. BB is able to keep plays alive long enough for wallace to get not only deep, but separation on shorter routes as well.

That being said, give torrey another couple of years and he'll be a beast.

One thing I like about Torrey BETTER then Wallace is he doesn't run his mouth. Torrey is a humble hard-working kid. Not that Wallace isn't hard working but we KNOW he not humble.

After watching many Steeler games, I would agree with Webb when he said Antonio Brown was a better receiver than Mike Wallace. Wallace has unworldly athletic ability, but is still raw in route running, sitting in zones, and catching ability.

Torrey has a similar scouting report as Mike Wallace coming out of college. Wallace is a bit faster, but Torrey is actually the more accomplished receiver coming out of college. They're both about the same size, but Torrey has notoriously small hands for someone over 6 feet tall.

Other differences: Mike Wallace has a mohawk and Torrey Smith has locks. Wallace always has a mean mug on his face and Smith is always smiling.

Wallace was only the #3 receiver his rookie year whereas Smith is starting so comparing stats is a little difficult. Yards per completion would probably be the best measurement and based on that Smith and Wallace are neck and neck.

I'm not convinced wallace is faster. I'm pretty sure torrey's 4.37 was the accurate count, they changed it though. All the 40 times this year seemed pretty slow.
