Joe Flacco Vs Alex Smith

149 posts in this topic

Couldn't resist. I popped into the 49ers forums just to see what they're take on this match up was.

I understand that it's a 49ers fan forum but I'm really surprised at how convinced they are that Alex Smith is better than Flacco. Now I haven't gotten to see much 49ers football this year so most of my knowledge of the guy comes from reading post game stuff and from what I saw last year.. but have they asked Smith to do much of anything that would make ANYONE think Smith > Flacco?

I honestly have no idea. Is he that much improved from last year? Would love to hear some thoughts from people who have seen this guy play a few games this year. According to the stats, he's basically managing games/throwing only when he has too.

You've hit the nail on the head. He's played very well this year, but he has a lot of talent around him, and he's also played inferior competition. Washington and Philly are middle of the road defenses, and Tampa Bay and Arizona are two of the worst in the NFL. Like I said, though, he has been very impressive, considering his track record. Amazingly, he leads the league in 4th quarter quarterback rating. The next month will be telling. He has to play us and then Pittsburgh.

He's like Joe was in his rookie year only with better receivers. Great O-line, great running game, great defense getting them the ball back.

I will put Smith above Flacco, this year at least. Smith has had a horrible past with signs of glimmering hope. However, this year, Smith is just way more consistant that Joe Cool. Kills me to say it because I own tshirts that say I'm "Wacco for Flacco," but this year, I would choose Smith over Flacco.

Smith is having a super year

He was public enemy number one on the niners message board for most of last year, multiple threads wanting him run out of town.
Fans offering to drive him to the airport and all that.
This place is mild compared to their message board.
Or you'll remember fans screaming for David Carr last year

But he has turned a lot of that around and picked up a lot of fans
Showing incredible consistency and he is especially good in the fourth quarter

Sad day when Flacco is on par with Alex Smith. Alex does have almost impenetrable O-line. Our Rushers will need to work it to get to him. I hope Pagano have some great schemes for them, because we will need to put Alex the bust in the right place where he belongs

Alex Smith has done nothing in the league for 6 or 7 years?

He's never done anything like Joe has, Joe has the numbers, the wins, the playoff appearances, etc

Alex Smith has a great run game, a great defense, and he isnt asked to do much AT ALL

Smith isnt asked to do much of anything, even with all the new pieces and the offense being inconsistent, hell, the whole team being inconsistent...Joe is still the better QB, Joe can win games when he has no run game, he has brought us back when the defense gets beat...Alex Smith has done none of that, he's having a nice little year but his numbers aren't that great

he's the ultimate game manager....he fits that description perfectly

This is something I totally forgot about. Since 2004 they've spent 3 first rounders, 3 second rounders, and a third rounder on offensive line positions, not to mention they've drafted guys like Frank Gore, Michael Crabtree, and Glenn Coffee pretty early. They've been trying to build a complete offense for 7 or 8 years now.

They're bound to feel that way otherwise they wouldn't be 49ers fans. Just the same way that we (well, most of us) would claim Flacco is easily the better QB.

Looking back on who the 49ers have beaten the only wins that impress me are those over the Giants and the Bengals (Possibly the Lions too but after they have been playing recently I'm not sure) We have played teams with much better defenses than the 49ers. I would like to see the 49ers take on the Steelers or the Jets defense and see how they do. I think our D will get Alex Smith's numbers lower then normal.

Flacco and company have faced some quality defenses this season but none have been significantly better than San Fran's.

If Flacco had someone like Jim as OC, I can pretty much guarantee he'd be a top 10 QB (at worst) this year.

On the other hand, if Smith had the worst OC in the NFL (Cam), I don't think he'd even be starting at this point.

You may be right.

Regardless, the 9ers are battle-tested as well. It's going to be a tough game.

Essentially, Smith is more efficient, but limited. Flacco is more productive but wildly variable. They both score about the same amount of points. We know that Flacco can also be a game manager, but we don't know Smith can win a game for you. Until that happens, Flacco is better in my opinion.

Alex Smith has so much talent surrounding him on the offense. He has three first rounders on the OL to protect him, a strong running back with Frank Gore, two WRs and a TE who were both drafted in the top 10 and most of the players are young. He's doing a good job and all but he does have talent around him to make up for what he lacks himselfs. Can he carry his team over the hump is to be seen.

if the 49ers done a falcons trade and tried to get one of the top 4 qbs, they could be a real threat to the packers for years to come. they are a very young team

Joe has played pretty poorly this season. He has played well at times (both Pittsburgh games, st louis and others) but his completion % is pretty sad and he has a very poor TD/int ratio. When you can only put up 16 or however many points it was against seattle and 10 against the jags as well as 13 against the titans (those numbers are probably slightly off) then I can't say that he has played "clutch" this season. He's had his moments, but those moments have been great and horrible. Gotta go with Alex Smith because I watch the 49ers every week as well as the ravens and I have seen him play much better than I have seen Flacco play.

The key is Alex Smith finally has the help around he has needed. A former QB turned head coach and a new offensive system that "protects" him more than the 5 he has had over the last 5 years. He could be even better next year after, you know, having the same offense in place for 2 years which is something he has never had. He has done a good job and he also has seen even more defenses than Flacco has since he came into the league 3 years before him, that has to be a bit of an edge as well. All that said, what you're seeing from Alex now is essentially the best he has IMO. That's not a bad thing, he is doing everything he needs to do to ensure his team stays in a winning position. Very few teams get a Manning, Brees, or Brady. The 49ers know Smith is not one of those guys and have put him in the best position to succeed. Hopefully yesterday's game is a realization on our staff's part that Flacco is not one of those guys either, but is more than good enough to help take this team where it needs to go.

This question would be laughable last year and it still is.

The success that Alex Smith has been having is the result you get when you have those talented pieces and when you have Jim Harbaugh by your side. I'd kill to have someone like Jim Harbaugh handling our offense.

exactly, a consistently bad team will have a team stacked full of 1st or 2nd round selections...Alex Smith was thought to be out this year but Jim came in and decided he would use him, maybe make him a little more secure with the football....but if Gore were to ever get injured that team would be screwed..we saw it last year and the year before that...no run game, so that leaves Alex Smith and more 4 win seasons....

I know they are happy their team is doing well, at first they were humble because they have had a good team crumble later on, but I guess since this team looks legit they are going to start talking garbage?? no debate about it....Joe Flacco >>>> Alex Smith

Alex Smith is our version of Trent Dilfer great defense and is asked to throw when needed and don't turn the ball over.

^^^ This
