Torrey, Cut Your Dreads :-)

35 posts in this topic

They are feeding Torrey a little more every game to go around those deep routes he's already good at running. Just wait until, he puts it all together. He's getting better. Soon 85% of CBs will back off him and slants and outs will be like pitch and catch. I'm not sure that Evans will ever be the number 2 full time again. I think he will be on the field and sharing that position with Torrey. Ozzie came thru with this pick. And Torrey is realizing his potential by showing better hands as time passes. We are seeing less body catching and more plucking the ball out of the air. Now he needs to block better ( I like that he's willing though) and either cut or tie back and tuck those dreads. The dreads owe us a TD. I'm playing Torrey. Do what you do and keep ballin'.

Sorry Lee....but Torrey has earned the #2 spot! I keep saying it, but when Flacco and Smith get on the same page 100% its going to be scary! Dude can beat anyone deep!

I'd have to agree right now. I still want Evans to see some time in there. He and Flacco need to have a rhythm because come playoff time, we may need his veteran savvy. I don't see any reason these two can't be on the outside and Boldin into the slot some. I do not want Smith to lose his spot right now though. He and Flacco are going to be an awesome combo.

At first I was kinda mad that the tackle wasnt penalized, and I was thinking that the rule should be changed. Then I remembered this tackle, and I was fine with it.. :D

no one tells Troy to cut his locks so Torrey...keep those dreads my brotha! seriously though, Torrey is flat out ballin. he kept running (instead of slowing down) this game and was the beneficiary of deep passes (one for a TD).

A proposed rule regarding length of hair was proposed back in March, 2008. It was (unfortunately) rejected. Personally, I think it should have been approved.

From ESPN (March 27, 2008):

Owners to consider length of hair flowing from helmets

The Kansas City Chiefs aren't calling for NFL players' scalps, but they want to stop the free-flowing of hair.

At next week's NFL owners meeting, the Chiefs are pushing for a rule change that would prevent Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu and other players with dreadlocks or long hair from covering the names on the backs of their jerseys. The rule is pretty simple: Any hair that covers that area has to be addressed.

"It doesn't mean players have to cut their hair," said Atlanta Falcons president Rick McKay, co-chairman of the league's Competition Committee. "They might have to keep it under their helmet."

If it were approved, it would be beneficial for all players to have extremely long hair. It really isn't fair to force that onto players. The idea is, if players are willing to accept long hair or beards. They should have to deal with the consequence of that action, dirty play or not.

Unfortunately there is no win win rule here, you have to pick one side or the other, and the NFL picked short hair.

They looked like they were on the same page for the first time today. Torrey was excellent today.

I friggin hate the dreads flowing out from the helmet...looks like a bunch of girls running around out there. Of course I would never say that to an NFL player to his face

Just sayin....

I say the rule should change. Had Torries hair not been there it would have been a horse collar. The hair simply got in the way.

If I was him I would cut it or tuck it up or at the very least make a pony tail bun thing like Hush did.

I agree no ofensive player (Torey Smith) should have long hair much less a defensive player. Torrey would have had a TD if not for his hair. ..And look at the two "FREAKS" on Cincy

His hair's fine the way it is. It's really no big deal. But I do wonder since I've never had hair that long, does it weigh you down any? Like could it turn him from a 4.3 receiver to a 4.2? Would it actually cause more drag?

I had the same reaction. Cut it or put it in a ponytail or something. That KC/PIT video was great though, that's exactly what I want to do to Troy Polamalu.

Either stuff that hair up in your helmet or if the league won't make a rule across the board about hair length...teams should enforce standards similar to how some teams do in MLB. Who cares about facial hair in the NFL but having hair sticking out your helmet and down your back can only help the other team in tackling you...albeit a rare occurrence.

It definitely weighs you down. Idk if it would effect how fast a guy could run, but I wore my hair down to my shoulders for over 2 years in high school. As soon as I cut it, I could feel the difference in the weight I was carrying on my head and neck, and my parents said my posture improved because I had previously been slouching a lot, which again I'd never noticed. But Torrey is used to it, and he wears a helmet, so I don't know what effect it has on him.

Here's an idea : Drill some extra holes , and run the dreads straight up and thru the helmet , rather than down and out :

http://fitsnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/dreadlocks.jpg

The downside : It would take an extra couple hours to suit up for the game , and you'd have to wear the helmet all day.

Slowing him down is not the issue. Providing a handle to be tackled by at shoulder level is obviously a problem. He may have scored on that play if not for the "hair take down".

I'm not one for enforcing some sort of "hair length code" for appearance sake. To each his own. But when your hair provides an advantage to the opposition, why give it to them? Especially a receiver or running back.

No, they don't.

A whole bunch of skill players in the NFL have long hair, some are the best in the league, and they get along just fine.

People are reacting as if Torrey is going to be tackled by his hair every week.

This is stupid. Only a clown that Pacman Jones would think of trying to tackle a ballcarrier by his hair. This hasn't happened before and won't happen again for a long while. It was a fluke.

IMO...If you have to tackle someone by pulling hair you do not belong in the NFL...Just saying.
Why not? Good players use every advantage given to them.

i think they should change the rule it should be horsecollar
That's what I thought it would be! I know that the rule doesn't actually have to be yank by a hand inside the back collar, but it only has to be a motion that imitates that and the refs will call it. That got me seeing red.
