Our Secondary Is Impressive

52 posts in this topic

Considering the absolute lack of pass rush recently, our CBs are playing amazing football. It's funny how last year it was considered our biggest weakness on Defense.. not so much anymore. Those big play catches from the Bengals were (for the most part) placed extremely well by Dalton as our CBs were right on the WR.

Kruger was about the only one I saw consistently gaining ground on his match ups. They get away with a few holds on him as well but whatever. Anyway, even with the time Dalton had, our CBs covered well.

they gave up a few big play but at the end of the day they did their job. i just hope we don´t give the bengals 500 yards on offense the next time we both head up. it´s gonna be a close game again and i am just glad that we won that one. now it´s all on thursday against the 9ers...

Okay game. I think you're giving them too much credit. Sure, they got 3 picks. But we just let a rookie QB throw for almost 400 yards on us, without A.J. Green.

I have been happy with the secondary overall. I think we see why the coaching staff has been careful about how they use Jimmy Smith now. He got dusted for a TD late in the game and that just cannot happen.

That injury to him in Week 1 was a huge setback for his development this season.

When a QB has 5+ seconds even against a blitzing defense, it's hard not to find someone open eventually. Even when he did make those completions, they were into tight windows.

Agreed, but there were times they just got straight up beat.

This. His o-line was so good.

Yeah they didn't have Green, but we didn't have Ray Freakin Lewis

Cary completely mistimed his jump on the huge Simpson catch early in the game. I think if he jumps a little later, he could have either swatted it down or caught it for the pick.

well not the play where smith got burned for a touchdown....

He's a rookie whose played very little. Did you really not expect him to get burned eventually?

OT well not really becuase pass rush has been mentioned, but the begals must have one of the best O lines in the nfl? and no real players of note, and by that i mean joe thomas, jahri evans, type names... there very underated o line.

Jimmy made a game-breaking play, then he gave up a game-breaking play.....

Cary had good coverage on a number of plays. Andy Dalton made some great throws....

Yeah they didn't have Green, but we didn't have Ray Freakin Lewis

Lol you seem to forget that Ray doesn't cover WRs or play cornerback. :)

Ray is not in the secondary bud.

After the Webb INT. and TD score I thought our Defense was going to have a feeding frenzy on Dalton with pressure and more TOs.

man...our secondary struggled against the "rookie" QB and the bengals WRs and the 49ers are coming to town in 4 days.

That speaks more to Dalton than our defense. Dalton is a freaking pro. I have mad respect for him after this game.

Still Ray commands the D. He'll recognize play-calling and tell the DB's where to go

That doesn't work so much for the passing game as it does for the run game. Do you realize how nearly impossible it is for Ray to tell the defense every route that every player is gonna run? No. It does not work that way.

Webb is by far our best corner and he is probably top 10 at his position in the entire NFL. Jimmy had terrible technique on that TD he gave up, but overall he looked pretty good and that pick was a great read. He is going to be a stud. I'm not sure about Cary right now. He looks good at times, but he gets beat too much. Our secondary is young and still improving, but I wouldnt say its overly impressive right now.

Easy now, I just meant that Ray is great at identifying whether a play is pass or run. Never said he could figure out each route, but he can tell a play-fake sometimes.

If we stop the run against the 49ers, I'd love to see them try to let Alex Smith win that game for them. Also, just because he's a rookie doesn't mean he isn't capable of playing well. Go check his stats, he's looking better than most veteran QBs.

I'm sticking with my original statement, DBs played very well. My concern is the lack of pass rush.

He needs to take his lumps as does Cary. You won't get any better in this league unless you play against the best. I think sometimes people get caught up with rookies stepping in and impressing. But most of the time you have to deal with the low to get to the high. I'm so happy Jimmy got PT, he made a play but yes he did get burned. That'll show him that even though you make one play you still have to play. He'll learn and become a shutdown corner in this league

I know this is blasphemy, but Reed is not making the plays that he used to make. I noticed he's been slow to help the corners quite a few times this year.

You make it sound like the 49er passing game is a reason for concern. Dalton is 2 x the QB Alex Smith will ever be already. I' more concerned about Frank Gore.

If Jimmy is moving to full-time status , it will be a mistake of monumental proportions if it results in reduced playing time for Webb.

Jimmy should be competing for playing time with everyone BUT Webb.

I'm with ya. Honestly, I'd be happiest if they put Jimmy in for Carr. Leave Webb and Cary where they are.

Thats not even close to what you said though. You said:

"Still Ray commands the D. He'll recognize play-calling and tell the DB's where to go"

Telling them whether its run or pass has little to do with them getting beat. And telling them where to go doesn't really sound like he's telling them run or pass.
