What Are The 49ers Strengths And Weaknesses?

152 posts in this topic

It bothers me that I haven't had a chance to see this team play at all this season. I have no idea of their strengths or weaknesses. I do know that A.Smith is being used more as a game manager than a QB at this point. Other than that, yeah, don't know. Oh...Gore! We have to shut down Gore.

Just trying to think of matchups that would favor us..i don't follow the 49ers by any means

they like to run the ball. We are excellent at stopping the run

Not so fast, my friend. Gore was shut down to 6 carries on 0 yards rushing, and even hurt on the game, against the Giants, but the 49ers still found a way to win the game.

Until this year I would have said their biggest weakness is the QB position, but Alex Smith has really turned it on this year. They're leading the league this year in rushing defense, but are 26th in passing defense. 29th in passing offense, 7th in rushing offense, 7th in offensive PPG, 1st in defensive PPG. Really their weaknesses are passing the ball and being passed on, but Alex Smith has done a great job so far.

Strengths - Run offense, offensive line, running backs. Defense is killer. Pass rush. Run D is great. First in points allowed. Usually win TOP.

Weaknesses - Secondary, inconsistent WRs, Alex Smith is a game manager.

Gore will kill us if he plays. He's a threat in receiving and rushing. The OL is monstrous.

Not so fast, my friend, Gore has more yards, higher average, and more TDs than Rice. One game can't be used as an example dude. Gore is a monster.

Decent comparison, maybe moreso 08. But, their #2 RB isn't that bad either. Hunter I think is name is? He gets a decent amount of carries.

I watch them every week. Defense is fast and they can get to the QB. Alex Smith is playing really well this year, but their WR's don't scare me. Of course I said the same thing about the Jaguars and Seahawks though. Gore is an animal, I wouldn't doubt it he put up 100+ yards against us. The secondary strives off of huge hits and they'll make the occassional turnover, but there's really nobody back there that should scare Flacco. It should be an evenly matched game, but I think Flacco's experience and our better offense will come out with the win.

My point being, even if you do shut him down, there are more ways for the 9ers to win than just him. They found a way to win against the Giants, so they can find a way to win against other opponents as well. I'm not arguing that Gore is or isn't an elite RB (which imo he definitely is when healthy), just that we need to do more than just shut him down.

Alex Smith is playing a lot better this year in his game manager role but he was asked to step up and be counted against the Giants and he did. We shouldn't be underestimating him.

That said, the way to win will be the usual way of shutting the run down early and hopefully forcing a couple of turnovers. I don't think we'll do an awful lot of scoring on offense ourselves if we have to go most of the field on a consistent basis.

Smith, Willis, Bowman and Rogers are all playing some amazing football. And their supporting cast is pretty good as well. Joe and company will have to make the most of their opportunities.

How's there O-line? I want to see a game were we can acutally get pressure
[/quote]

Their offensive line is great, especially from a runblocking perspective. Iupati is a monster. Joe Staley is a solid LT. Anthony Davis is a solid RT. Pretty good offensive line.

I'm watching them against the Cardinals right now. I think that even if they weren't a good team we would have trouble with them on a short week. The fact that they have a winning record and we play them at home will propel us to a close victory.

True and agreed.

To beat them, we need to get ahead early to force them out of their run game. If we make them win this game on Alex Smith's shoulder's we have a good chance. If we don't take Gore and Hunter out of the game, we'll have problems. Gore is the same kind of back that gives us problems. Big, strong, fast, one cut back that will lower his head and dish out punishment. He's a much faster Hillis, almost like Adrian Peterson's style.
