Antwan Barnes - Remember Him ?

21 posts in this topic

I liked this kid when he was a Raven but he never got onto the field, he was like a Paul Kruger in that way, he seemed to make plays when he got a chance but he never got a chance very often. Paul Kruger is playing more this year so thats good.

Antwan Barnes has been doing quite well for himself with the Chargers, he even made an "underrated defense" -ive players list

He already has 5 sacks this year, which is what he was all about

Good for him, he got more chances than Kruger has in his first few season with us. While he may be a better pass rusher he wasn't good against the run.

Glad to see he is doing good though.

a pass rusher was the reason he got drafted, so he's doing exactly what he's known to do...im sure he can get better on his overall game

yeah good for him, i just hate to see talent let go...we traded him to Philly I think, anyone know who we drafted with that pick?

Well, good to see him doing well. But ya know, I'm good with what we got. Kruger and McPhee have been great.

I think, had Pagano been the DC last year, we would have kept him. He certainly fits into Pagano's style better than Mattisons.

I remember being very surprised when we traded him. I watched several interview with Mattison about Barnes stacking practices on top of practices. From what I remember, he was one of the breakout candidates of that season. Glad to see him doing well.

I'm not sure how Barnes would do in our modern defense. We need guys who are hybrids and can play multiple positions to confuse the offense. Come to think of it, that might be why Kindle isn't playing yet. Honestly I'm not sure why we let go of Barnes and haven't played Kindle.

I always liked Barnes, one of the few guys we released and who actually has had a nice career since ( nice being relative). Though, McPhee and Kruger will both surpass him. I have no doubts.

Kindle.... who knows, I can't see him being better then McPheeNOM at this point. I think Kindle will see the field more next season.

Like the nickname. Is that yours or did you see that elsewhere?

...thats the thing, people wanted to get rid of Kruger until this year and I kept sayin, No wait he plays good when he gets a chance, let him play some before we run him out of town...i felt the same way about Antwan...

but u cant keep them all i suppose

At that time we had far too many project LB'S. Gooden, Barnes, McClain, Ellerbe, Burgess and more... it sucked Barnes was the odd man out, he isn't as complete as some of the others but he excelled at the rush... the others didn't really have one speciality...

Actually I liked your insight about why maybe Kindle hasn't been playing much. Seems to me that all aspects and all phases of the game have a ripple effect. For example, good coverage in the secondary allows more time for a pass rush to succeed just as much as a good pass rush helps the secondary have to cover for less time.

Antwaan Barnes had tremendous upside as a pass rusher, but he never showed much versatility which is a trait the Ravens admire greatly and use frequently. Guys like Cory Redding, Terrell Suggs, and Haloti Ngata have basically interchanged their positions countless times on our defense.

So yeah I liked Barnes as a Raven, but let's just say I never had to have his jersey or anything. Also, now that you pointed it out, maybe I better understand why he isn't really playing for us anymore.

Anthony Allen. Barnes was always a good pass-rusher but he wasn't a complete player, and he still isn't. We could have used him last year but with the emergence of Kruger ( now that he's playing where he should) he wouldn't have a role on our team. Glad he's making the most of his opportunity though.

I like Anthony Allen too, I think he has some real potential as well...hopefully he gets a chance to show what he can do next year or two

Barnes had a sack/strip on Carson Palmer tonight. He is looking really good filling in for Shaun Phillips.

Just from a pass rushing standpoint. He's honestly one of the reasons the Raiders ran the ball so well against them. He's still terrible against the run. The Raiders won, because they ran the ball at will on them. I distinctly remember one play where the RG trap blocked and absolutely leveled Barnes.

Yeah, but for the most part pass rushing is all the Chargers are calling on him to do. He is lining up at end, as well as standing up at linebacker. But you're right, he is still pretty bad against the run. He did have a good tackle on Michael Bush on third down that forced a punt, but yes he is still mostly bad against the run.

I don't think I've ever seen someone on our team get run over more easily, he would just disappear into blockers while the HB jogged past, sometimes it just looked like he was being eaten.
