Cundiff And Kicking Game

25 posts in this topic

Aight, I don't want to harp too much on Cundiff because he did nail the clutch 52-yarder but I wonder what is up. I remember watching the game and they showed that stupid stat before the 47-yard attempt of poor Billy missing 7 consecutive 50 yarders or something....I immediately felt doomed. Like he was cursed to miss it. Sure enough, he missed.

He redeemed himself big time and I had a lot of confidence in the second kick even though it was a 52 yarder in the Ketchup Field, but why does it have to be that way? Why do kickers seem to get so psyched out? Shouldn't this be routine by now? I mean all they have to do is kick. They do it over and over and over. They have like 2 hours before the game and all week to prepare. We all know Cundiff has the leg. He missed in a dome in St Loius-twice. He missed in Ketchup field with not much wind to deal with...a rarirty in Pittsburgh. He has missed some others also, Jags game maybe? I forget. I couldn't see anything wrong with the snap or the hold.

Do the Ravens have different types of turf for Billy to practice on? If not, why don't they? They don't need a whole field but maybe some patches or strips for Billy to prepare on. I don't know, but just seems to me that kickers should be making these kicks and Billy especially with his leg. It isn't just him in the league either but Billy does have a track record here.

He excels at kick offs and I am very confident in him there but any time he comes out for anything more than 40 yards I get extremely nervous for him. I hope he can go on streak here and prove me wrong because we are going to need him.

Any thoughts?

Keep in mind that a college game was played on the field the night before (classy move spitzburgh!)

Harbs said in the News section that his drive foot slipped a little bit. If the field had actually been groomed to play a professional football game perhaps it wouldn't have sailed right?

Be glad its not Hauschka out there!!

I don't know, but I would guess that most of the missed 50+ yarders came when he was a cowboy. We have the "new and improved" Billy! I trust him.

The stealers have always kept their field this way to play to their "strengths". There should be some sort of NFL standard other than size.

I haven't heard about the high school game. I know the college game was mentioned a few times by the commentators.

I'm all for supporting the local youth sport leagues, but letting them play on a pro field and not grooming it is just wrong!!

Once again the league looks the other way as a fair haired golden team is helped to the Lombardi!!

Don't worry about it. Heinz field is one of the worst places there are for kickers in the NFL. It was the main reason Tomlin didn't want to go for it at the end of the game.

Cundiff did so well last season that we forgot the guy is human; kind of like we did when Stover finally missed a few the year before he left here for the Colts. He's still booming them, he still came through with a clutch kick. I'm not worried about Cundy, he's fine.

Edit: Yea, to echo previous comments, Ketchup Field's turf isn't fit for a 12+ age football game, much less NFL football and the league should make them do something about that.

Speaking of which, I just found out he's on the Seahawks from highlights with his blocked FG in Dallas. I guess we'll see him on Sunday...

I think Cundiff is going to have some stiff competition next year during training camp because of his inconsistency this year. IMO, he is missing too many that he should make as a pro. Attention all, I am concerned that he will cost us a big game down the line with a missed kick. We will have to see, I hope this does not come true.

I'm a little worried as well. Missing 7 Consecutive 50+ yarders isn't the best. I am so happy he broke that streak with a money kick on Sunday. But he has been pretty great inside the 50. But he just doesn't seem like the same kicker as last year. He is human now.

Its obvious that he struggles with right hash mark kicks. If its a 50+ yarder on the right hash mark its trouble.

Correct indeed. Looks like he's still performing at the same high caliber as well.

Cundiff has been doing fine. From anywhere inside 50, we're truly shocked when he misses--and that says something about how automatic he's been. When Hauschka lined up from outside 25, I was praying with my stomach bottoming out...

He's made 20 of 24 this year and 3 of the misses were over 50 yards. All 4 misses were away from home.

He's more dependable than Matt was his last couple of years and definitely has a stronger leg than Stover ever had. Why are you concerned?

I'm not too worried about Cundiff because he's been doing well and continues to do well for us. Don't forget that even he says the top of his range is about 53 yards, so the closer you get to the top end, the more likely you're going to miss. That's just a factor that affects all kickers.

Turf issues aside at Heinz Field, I remember a tweet saying it looked like the timing for the snap to Cox was a little bit off on that kick Cundiff missed.

Also, don't forget a number of kicks missed by Cundiff happened when our previous long snapper Matt Katula was injured. It led to a number of balls that were not properly set. It is a big reason why we brought in Morgan Cox now.

His misses seem to come at important times. One clear example, the 40-yarder Sunday. I hope we don't get burned with another miss. He was not more dependable than Stover. The knock on Stover were his kickoffs and his 46-47 yard range late in his career.

He's missed 1 FG under 50 yards this year!

In his 18 years with the Browns/Ravens Matt had an 83.7% average kicking FGs.
Also, in those 18 years he had 31 50+ yard attempts and made 13.

I loved Matt Stover just as everyone did. He was clutch. But I'm not thinking we should can Cundiff looking for the new Stover. Billy's kickoffs are HUGE and he's at 86.5 % last year and this year combined. Definitely a "serviceable" place kicker and seems to have good composure.

If we go searching again, we could end up with another Hauschka!
