Torrey Smith

146 posts in this topic

More pressure has been put on him so far than was expected and he's been a bit of a mixed bag. He drops a lot still but he comes up with the big play as often. Being as he's a rookie with those question marks over him I'm not going to criticize him for it. Overall he's exceeded my expectations so I give him a B+.

I'm really glad Torrey ended up with the game winning TD catch. He's young and needs a confidence boost especially after that last drop/miss before his TD. I think he established himself tonight, as some saw St Louis as a fluke since they had a terrible defense. He may have Evans' spot now, depending on how we reformat this offense when he comes in.

I would have felt really bad if Torrey had the holding call AND the drop in the end zone, and not had the chance to get that game winning TD. Luckily he made the play when it counted. Props to him for that! He will be a very good WR in the future.

I love what Ray Rice just tweeted, "I'm proud of @TorreySmithWR lol but he gonna have to take me dinner this week for getting my TD called back lol."
Lol.

I am excited about his future.
Has yet to play against a secondary he cannot get behind....

His speed is sort of deceptive in a sense that it seems like he slows down then takes off and he leaves his defender ( I guess that should be more of his acceleration being deceptive ). His catching will get better but what we are seeing from him this early on, seems like he can be a special player in this league.

I thought I posted in this thread earlier that I was skeptical of Torrey just because of our past history with WRs, I dont want to jump the gun, that St Louis game opened my eyes, and tonight he really showed me something, i think he's going to be a really good

some in here were calling him a bust before he even played an nil game. he had some drops but what counts much more: he came back and caught the game winning td against the steelers and also last week caught a deep ball to take us in field goal range...

i thaught he might be special but that he would be that special that early on i didn believe. shows what a locker with ray and ed can do for those young kids...

Torries come up big in a couple of games... 1. Vs rams he had a breakout game with 5rec 152yds n 3TD's 2. Vs texans he had a few good catches but a nice I think 51 yarder helped put up points 3. Vs cards he had a few good catches but caught the pass that put us in FG range n basically won the game for us 4. We all know what he just did vs pittsburgh n so do there fans :) ....GO TORREY!!!

Someone needs to teach him how to catch properly, but when he can he's going to be an unbelievable asset. He gets so much separation it's unreal. Every time we go to the deep ball he's open, and Joe is getting on target more and more. He just needs to come down with them.

What's your opinion on him as of now? He dropped TONS of passes, but has shown so much potential. Right now, he's the reason we won. But he also let another game-winning TD pass go through his hands. I know he's a rookie and all, but wow.

So far i give him a C+

Honestly, all the dropped passes, he is a rookie. This is his first year in the NFL. Considering that, he is one dangerous WR. Once he gets it all together, I cannot even imagine how wicked he is going to be, considering how good he is now. A great pick up by Oz.

Torrey made up for his drops, how about Joe Flacco...can he finally get any respect? He beat the Steelers and Ben in Pittsburgh...

oh my
Lets not forget about the game winning drive in the game also. Beating the Steelers in Pittsburgh? Worth a billion dollars. Beating the Steelers with the offense on a game winning drive?? Priceless. Flacco showed tonight he has all the capability of being not only a leader, but a game winner as well. Put it to rest folks; Flac is for real.

his catch for the pi call on the first drive was also great. would have been a td if it wash´t for the penalty...

he has ups and downs. like any other player (rookie) in the game. but the sky is the limit for him with his talent and joes big arm of course...

I was mad as hell at Torrey but I just kept feeling like he would make a big play eventually. He seems to be that type of player.

I dropped to my knees with my face clutched in my hands and was in disbelief when he dropped the first TD attempt. All in all, he made the big play, WE TOOK MORE TIME OFF THE CLOCK and both Flacco and Smith redeemed themselves 10 time's over!

A C sounds about right. Looking like he has the T.O. syndrome with making some big catch's but drops a lot more then he should. The way he is going he just may be a true future for us and not another DVD bust.

Great Catch T !!
Excellent Game Joe !!

C? No, not after that GW catch. Solid B, with the potential for a massive A+ game if he doesn't hold on the run play and doesn't have those 2 drops. This kid a rookie and is growing up very quickly before our eyes. I don't think there has been one other receiver we have ever had who I'd expect to make that kind of GW catch behind the defense. Except maybe Quadry.

I honestly think he needs to get his eyes checked (i'm being serious). When he has had long throws over his shoulder he seems to over react to the ball and pulls his arms in at the last second.

The reason I say this is because when I played in HS I did not realize that I needed glasses. The Ball would not come into focus until the last second and I would overreact to the pass very similar to what I have seen Torrey do on a couple of the long passes.

I'm sure that a eye exam is part of the physical, but I think he just might need to get it checked again. He might just need a slight corrective lenses.

Does some one have Coaches phone number?

It was weird...on the first shot to the EZ where he dropped it, he almost came to a complete stop (slight exaggeration) then realized Flacco let it go. He seems to do that a lot. That is the main reason that he and Flacco haven't connected on more of those deep balls that seem to be just out of reach. COME OUT OF YOUR BREAK FULL SPEED AND KEEP GOING FULL SPEED. He'd have 200 more yards and 2-3 more TD's. Think about it - he'd be in the same conversations with AJ Green and Julio Jones and we didnt give up 78 picks in the next few drafts!!! :)

Okay, we go into the Bengals game with Evans, Smith, and Boldin spread wide. Pitta and Dickson are waiting to catch the short ones over the middle. Rice will run wild. How can anyone pick them to win the division over us? Rookie QBs don't do well against us.

His drops are maddening but if he can continue putting pressure on DBs and creating big plays, I'll learn to live with them.

He's got a lot of potential.

He kinda reminds me of Joe. He can be inconsistent, but also extremely clutch. I've been a Torrey fan since his game against the Rams. I hope we keep him for a long time. I applaud him for not keeping his head down after dropping what could have been the game winning TD, and instead catching another 30 seconds later.

I've said it once, so I'll say it again... Jerry Rice had tons of drops as a Rookie WR, and no I'm not comparing Torrey to Jerry Rice, but it just puts everything in perspective. Drops will happen, but the way he kept working and fighting to make the biggest play of the season so far deserves kudos. Let's not forget his clutch catch last week to seal the deal against the Cardinals.

This kid really fits our offensive identity because he keeps us on a roller coaster of emotions tough catches and easy drops at times.... Every game he burns corners on other teams but can't make that game breaking catch.

Eventually he and flacco will begin to connect on those 50yd bombs and it's gonna be something special.

If lee evans ever comes back to play.... Then we could create some real mismatches from the slot position. With either him or Torrey Smith getting deep.....
