CHFF Studies Which QBs Decline After First 7 Games

5 posts in this topic

The folks at CHFF just completed a study which measures how well quaterbacks have historically played during the first seven gamse of the season as opposed to last 9.

(Things to note: The original inspiration was to see if Eli Manning really does play much better earlier or if that is just a myth, but Joe Flacco was one of the 33 active quarterbacks measured which is probably the only reason why we Ravens fans might care.

They did not use an 8/8 split because the 7th week concludes the month of October. At this point every team has played at least 7 games this year.)

The stats measured were: completion percentage, yards per attempt, passer rating, and win percentage.

The chart can be seen here: http://coldhardfootb...n_Games%3F.html

Eli Manning does in fact suffer the second largest decline in passer rating (-14.10) in the last 9 games of the season. Depending on what Eli andRyan Fitzpatrick (-16.40) do the rest of this season, Eli could end up with the largest decline. Joe Flacco (+9.00) actually has the best increase in the last 9 games. David Garrard (-0.30) is the most consistent, as defined by the closest difference to 0 in the splits.

Eli’s completion percentage is the fourth biggest decline (-3.73%). Kyle Orton has the worst decline (-4.50%), while Matt Hasselbeck has the best increase (3.35%). Matt Schaub (-.06%) is the most consistent.

For yards per attempt (YPA), Eli has the second worst decline (-0.98); almost a full yard. Only David Carr(-1.23), Eli’s backup, is worse. Part of how Joe Flacco increases his passer rating is because of his +0.54 boost in YPA. Believe it or not, Donovan McNabb is the most consistent YPA performer (-0.01).

Don’t let a San Diego fan miss these kind words: Eli also has the biggest decline in win % (-.245). Eli has started the first 7 games with a 36-14 (.720) record, which is second to only Tom Brady (.729). But he’s finished just 29-32 (.475) in the last 9 games.

Who has the best increase in win %?Philip Rivers. He goes from 22-21 in the first 7 games of the season, to a ridiculous 40-9 in the final 9 games. Fitzpatrick (+0.006) is the most consistent winner (or loser, given his record).
So does this mean all the Flacco-haters will finally go away?

Really? Lol.

Interesting, I hadn't noticed how much his passer rating had gone up between the two perids, but it makes sense.

At least he puts up decent numbers at the beginning, usually.

It's a trend that I expected to happen with Joe anyway. I won't make an excuse for him because he is practically a veteran but there was bound to be chemistry issues between him and his receiving corp because of the lack of time he's spent with most of them.

It'll be tough this year though what with the AFC North teams being elite defenses and that we still have 5 divisional games left.
