Mana Silva

36 posts in this topic

Anyone know why we cut Mana Silva from the practice squad? You can never have to many dbs and this kid has ALLOT of potential, plus we need an eventual replacement for Ed Reed and while I like our SS's they aren't irreplaceable. Why would we cut a safety who was amazing in college and in the preseason for a 6'0 receiver. We already have 4 guys on the roster about the same size, 3 of whom are very young with tons of upside in Torrey Smith, Laquan Williams, David Reed and Anquan Boldin. Anyways, I trust our front office but I really expected this kid to make the team in the next year or two and have a bright future.

Let me know what you guys think about this decision and also weigh in on who you think we bring in this week to fill our 53'd roster spot for the Steelers game this week.

I totally agree, our WR position is flooded with young talent at the moment. David Reed, LQ, Torrey, Doss, etc. However, we do have a lot of safeties but I thought this kid could be something specialish

We do have good depth at safety but I mean 4 isn't exactly "allot".... we have Ed Reed, Bernard Pollard, Tommy Z and Haruki. That is plenty of depth unless injuries hit. We could easily lose 2 safeties to injury and have no backups, just my two cents.

I didn't know he was gone. Is it possible someone else claimed him off the practice squad to bring to their active roster as they are able to do and we just filled his spot with another receiver? i don't know, its why I'm asking...

well we've flip-flopped him and the WR who replaced him twice so far this year. I imagine it comes down to who they need to mimic each week in practice. This week apparently they need someone to be Wallace instead of Troy... We do have an extra roster spot currently so you never know what will happen

Silva is an athletic freak. We have a great DB coaching staff that could help him harness that ability into a very capable safety.

Silva is/was one of my favorite practice squadders. I expect him to back on our practice squad soon, because we certainly dont need another WR.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but Silva was signed to the practice squad of the Bills today according to Aaron Wilson.

Kind of disappointing. I like the kid, and still see a lot of potential. Hope we didn't let one get away.

We did, and it is sad because we have 2 safeties who I think many on here seriously overrate their abilities.

Given that our CBs are getting healthy , Webb is probably seen as the backup to the backups at safety. He's the guy I see as the best replacement for Reed when he retires , at least among current personnel , especially if he can pack on some extra muscle.

I just don't think there was a spot for him, we need all of the corners that we have because we've already dipped into the practice squad to grab Gorrer. So i think he was let go just because we didnt feel that we needed him much more than someone else. I trust our staff, i'm sure they didn't have much of a choice. But he could be a very good talent in a few years.

And this thread isn't seriously overrating an undrafted rookie's abilities?

Much agreed. Im not a huge fan of Zibby or Nakamura. They are both okay safeties, but I dont think either one of them should have starting roles. Silva was excellent at Hawaii. Its a shame we let him go..

He had looked better than any prospect we brought in in a while judging from college. Versus two dudes who have had minimal impact, the best that can be said is they didn't screw up too bad in reeds absence.

Okay. We let go an UDFA safety. He must not have been that good if he got cut, right? He got cut from the PS. Does he have potential? Yeah, he does. I see it. But potential is defined by what you haven't done yet. And he hasn't done jack to be upset about losing him.

Of I rooted for any other team than sure, but when youy have guys like priest, saturday, harrison, and cary williams, ellerbe, scott, and most recently danny gorrer, watching him leave I know we have a good chance of regretting it when reed hands it up

Yeah but potential is basically the point of the practice squad. Players who arent quite ready for the NFL, yet have the potential to be good one day are practice squad material, and Silva was exactly that. I wouldnt say that I'm upset we let him go, but I liked him better than several of the other players on our practice squad. I would have rather kept him around, and let someone else go.

True. It sucks, because ya know, for all you know, they might have sucked when they were originally cut, and got better. Who knows? I mean, there are a lot of guys that get cut and then become stars, but then there are way more who get cut and no one hears their name ever again.

Agreed, but I guess 7 other players have "more" potential. I agree that we should have kept him as a developmental prospect, but I'm okay with him beign cut. Doesn't really hurt. When we lost him, we got Josh Bynes back, so I'm good! :)

It seems strange to me, because I heard the coaches were really high on Silva in training camp. But oh well, as you said, at least we got Bynes back! He is our next Bart Scott/Jameel McClain/Dannell Ellerbe!

Yeah but other teams are nowhere near as good as we are when farming talent.

Bumping this old thread....I am quite disappointed that we were unable to hold onto this kid, mainly due to the fact that I don't see many safety prospects in this years draft class who I would feel comfortable taking over for our goat safety Mr. Ed Reed. I don't recall seeing many safety prospects who have recorded more than five interceptions this season. Let me know what you guys think about this and if we should pursue this kid once more to groom behind Reed or if you would prefer someone in the draft or through free agency. Some prospects I like, but not necessarily more than Mana Silva are Mark Barron, Aaron Henry, Bacarri Rambo and possibly Janzen Jackson (as a 7th rd or udfa project player).

No prospects in the upcoming draft you say, yet Silva is the heir to Reeds throne? Since he's not on an active roster at this time, odds are he's not going to take Reeds spot when he retires.

I never said I didn't like any of the prospects, I said those were the guys who I liked, but that I wished we had held onto Silva in order to possibly save a draft pick. I really like Bacarri Rambo (not just because of his sweet name haha) and some of the others I named and would be happy for us to pick up one of the guys who I listed earlier to learn under Ed Reed for a year or two.
