Defensive Tackling

18 posts in this topic

Man, one thing I wanted to bring up yesterday but forgot to was mentioning the open field tackling our guys have been doing. Outstanding. I mean there was a pitiful (PITIFUL) effort against Patrick Peterson, but I can't take credit away from him....he was throwing guys off of him like they were babies. Still, overall our guys have been MUCH better at open field tackling. Not just Pollard, who has won me over with his skills (that peeps were trying to say he didn't have) at coverage as well as tackling, but Webby looks much better, Carr, Cary..the whole dang defensive backfield besides Reed, who was already great at it, has gotten so much better. The entire defensive group rarely miss tackles and they almost always get their man any other time. That's something that older Ravens fans should be happy about, because just a short two seasons ago, that was one of our biggest struggles.

It's something that this defensive has always emphasized. That, and trying to strip the ball every single play. Can't believe how much the unit as a whole have been wrapping up players since Dawan left.

Yeah they've done a great job at open field tackles this year. I'm just glad i never have to see Fabian Washington miss another tackle with the Ravens..He was a nice guy, but man was he a terrible corner. I've been a fan of Pollared since the Preseason, Tackles about as hard as the cookie monster does to his cookies.

That special teams tackling is all on Harbaugh. He's MR. SPECIAL TEAMS! And also, he's the one saying Tandon Doss can't get on the field because he can't play special teams. Well, I guarantee you Tandon Doss can stand on the field and let a kick be returned for a touchdown like the rest of the guys did. So let him prove he can do that, and then let him show you why he should be getting offensive snaps over LaQuan.

Yeah, don't understand either since Tandon played special teams, not just as a returner either at Indiana. Obviously the coaches see things we don't so I won't question it too much. It just seems odd he has hardly seen the field PERIOD this year when we know he can be a good contributor..

Maybe, just maybe, there's someone better than him at STs! Just a theory though.

Oh you! Harbaugh isn't out on the field making tackles, and it's pretty obvious that this team overall knows how to tackle and if special teams gunners are missing it's due to their execution, not their education. I mea sure, Doss could 'let a kick be returned for a touchdown' but maybe he can't do that as well as everyone else, :P .

While this may be true, LaQuan has shown nothing as a receiver.

This isn't ST related, but I'm sick of seeing LaQuan in over Doss. Usually I recognize that the coaches know more then we do, but I'm starting to wonder if Cam simply can't differentiate between him and Torrey.

To be fair, nobody was saying anything about how much LaQuan 'sucks' (not putting words in your mouth, Blex) until the ONE drop he had in the Cards game. While I agree it's not acceptable to drop passes, Boldin's been doing that a lot this year and nobody has said mum about it and I'm talking about before last week. Every player makes mistakes, and I'm sure that the coaches feel they're putting the best guy in. I just don't have the knowledge or savvy to say otherwise.

Edit: Although now that I think about it, I remember someone saying that Doss was Flacco's 'pick' or something to that effect; that Joe said he wanted to play with Doss. I dunno. I hope the coaches don't have their heads up their ahh, orifices.

LaQuan isn't the reason we've given up to ST TDs. I saw like five missed tackles on the Peterson play. No one even touched Joe McKnight. I'd to see Reed, Boldin, Doss/LaQuan with Pitta/Dickson wide in a 4 WR set with Leach staying into to block.

He's shown nothing??? I can't agree with that at all. And, as terrible as Cam is, I'm pretty sure he can differentiate between two players. And ya know, maybe Laquan just offers the offense more than Tandon. I love Tandon as a WR, but I think Laquan's speed and deep threat ability offers more to our offense than Doss' possession type, over the middle abilities. He has more big play ability.

The problem with Doss is personnel issues. Unfortunately for him, we have Boldin (possession), Dickson (possession) and Pitta (possession). With Evans out, our only deep threat is Smith mixed with the occasional Q2. My opinion is if the TE combo wasnt so dynamic and/or Evans was playing, we'd be seeing (more of) Doss!

Lol, touche!

But I don't really agree on this as an "issue" per se. The defense in general has been one of the best tackling teams in the NFL this season. Sure there have been two returns allowed by the special teams. But when the Jets returned the kick-off their returner didn't get touched! I would attribute this to the lock-out, and moving the kick-off location back. I think this has more to do with players trying to do too much and getting out of their lanes, and less to do with fundamentals. But we will have to wait and see if any other returns our made against our special teams to see for sure if this is more of an aberration than anything else.
