Flacco's Halftime Speech

30 posts in this topic

I read on twitter that Joe gave a speech to the offense during halftime to rally them. Anyone hear/know more about this?

No but it probably went to the effect of we are going to go with what works. "And Cam sit there and look pretty, act like your calling plays, and <shut> up." Ok probably not but a guy cam dream.

Anquan Boldin alluded to it and said Joe basically told the whole team to wake up. Otherwise, no shouting, no arguing, no meetings, nothing. Just Joe telling the guys to wake up and get their heads in the game.

Didn't anyone else here see Flacco pretty much punch Torrey in the face with excitement after that last catch he made to guarantee the game winning FG? I think Joe's always been a lot more pumped than a lot of people have given him credit for simply because the camera isn't on him every five seconds..I mean, he's not a darling.

From the bits and pieces I've been reading, Ray Lewis did not give the whole team a speech, contrary to popular belief.

Rather, it was Joe who did a lot of the talking, and then veterans talking to younger guys briefly on the side. Joe and Q took it upon themselves to set the tempo in the second half and the defense responded in kind.

It wasn't a team-wide speech where people were huddled around, it was just everyone talking to each other, raising their spirits by saying that "it's just football" and keeping things simple.

From both press thingies I've watched, it seems as if the entire team kind of knew that what they were doing was not the desired effect and took it upon themselves to rally and Ray said, 'Coach really didn't need to say all that much,'. That is awesome that our entire team is able to do that. We have one of the best dang locker rooms in football.

If you watched Flacco's post-game presser, he spoke with a lot more confidence.

Sure, his answers are still pretty standard, but he projected his voice well and you could tell that he was relieved that the team rallied. (LINK)

All jokes aside, I did notice that.

I don't pay that much attention but Flacco looks bigger than I remember, carrying some weight in his shoulders. I like the guy and I don't think he's done getting better.

Me, I wanna know what Ray said to the defense. As Suggs put it, "We gave up some runs early, but it took our humble leader to say some unpolite words to us to get his boys going."

When I watch that back, it looks like Torrey is hounding him or maybe gets too giddy and is up in Joe's face and Joe pushes him back and says STOP! I could see it being hype over the big play but it looked like what I said above. Either way I loved it cause I was all pumped too.

Big difference. I've always felt that Flacco appeared somewhat like a puppy that had been kicked too much during his pressers. I wrote it off to him just not liking being in front of the media. He looks way more confident here.

Just don't understand why speeches are necessary.

"Come on guys, we need to wake up and play football"

"Oh my goodness, Joe is right. What are we thinking? If we get our head in the game, we could probably put some points on the board. What a genius!"

I don't believe in Bulletin board material and I don't believe in speeches to get you to perform at a higher level against a 1-5 team. If we were underdogs, maybe I can see it as a confidence thing but at this point, it's becoming very sad.

Speeches work better on younger guys who thrive off emotion.

Older veterans usually don't need speeches to get them amped up since they've been there and done that. They know that they've lost on days where they've heard great speeches, and won on days where they've heard bad speeches.

This is a relatively young team, hence where the extra motivation is needed with some players.

going along with that point, whenever you see Ray Ray giving his pre-game speeches, it's the young guys and the new guys responding the most, but Guys like Suggs are kinda just there lol.

Joe doesn't need emotion, he just needs to go out and win games. That's what he is there for, to help win games, he isn't there for emotional support. I'm glad he stood up and said something at halftime though, but with the way the offense played in the second half, I'm wondering why Joe didn't say that during half time of the Jags game. Now he needs to say it before the Steelers game, and halftime of the Steelers game so they play 60 Minutes of Football, not 30 minutes.

I agree that we are a young team but its the offensive line that needs to elevate their game and they are all veterans with Oher being the youngest. I can't ask for more from Torrey Smith or Ed Dickson. They are playing great football.

After the Jaguars' game, I posted that Joe needed to get more vocal. He is not a Field General, but rather a 2nd LT on the field. When he gets sacked, he needs to let his linemen hear about it. Right now, it's like they just miss a block and yell "look out" to him. When someone fumbles or drops a pass, he needs to make sure he lets them think about what they have done by reminding them to keep their heads in the game. I don't ever remember the Ravens being a second half team before. I was driving back from Philadelphia last Sunday and by the time I could pick up the Baltimore station to check on the score, we were down by 24-3. Hopefully, we can take the second half and avoid future losses. We are not going to win them all, but at least we can hold our heads up when we lose.

John Clayton from ESPN still considers Flacco an elite quarterback.

We could ask Dickson to stop dropping balls, and for Torrey to keep his legs under him even when he's looking back.

Neither are playing poorly, but neither are playing as well as I know they can either.

Yeah I agree. I cut them slack for inexperience and youth but Torrey slows down big time when he looks back for the ball and IMO that is why the ball appears overthrown. Dickson has been dropping a lot of good passes as well. It will come in time I believe. They are both very talented.
