How Bout Torrey Smith?

72 posts in this topic

Torrey has shown enough flashes this season that he's changed my perception about him completely. If him and Joe develop some consistent chemistry they're going to be very dangerous. He has made some great grabs the past few weeks. That INT he gave the Cards today was terrible, but he made up for it at the end. I'm liking what he's shown so far though, way better than I expected based upon his tape in college and the combine.

With Torrey , Joe may be thinking it's better to err on the side of overthrowing him since he's got the speed to run under it. So far he's erred a little too much on a lot of those throws , but if he ever gets dialed in with Torrey , they're going to be a dangerous duo.

He also was the cause of an Int...and seems to fall on 80% of his deep routes...but he seems to be growing..
The reason he's falling on those routes is because Flacco over throws him a lot.

Torrey looks good. He still makes rookie mistakes but the kid looks good and is getting better. I think this experience starting has been good for him. He has bright future. He is adding routes. I think Joe has to dial in his speed a little better but that will come with repetition. I have questions about what Cam does when and if Evans comes back.

I was thinking this as well, then I went back and watched the plays. Torrey slows down when he looks back for the ball considerably and I think (yeah, could be wrong) that is why the ball seems overthrown so badly. Either way that last catch was on the money all the way. Perfectly thrown, great catch. Hope that means whatever the issue has been that it is on the mend.
Your absolutely right, but when he slows down and looks back it's normally to throw off the DB's. it worked wonderfully against the rams, but it's throwing off Flacco too lol.

still not sold on him quite yet. I see a lot of balls going his way he doesn't catch, and has dropped a few easy catches. I think when he's a prime he's gonna be a monster though. He has so much potential and looking like a steal in the second round

That could/would be a good thing IMO. Three deep threats to throw to (Smith/Evans/Dickson) would absolutely make D's respect the speed and play off our recievers, leaving Boldin/Doss open on underneath routes. You put Boldin in one on one man coverage, and he's gonna outmuscle that player covering him.
Plus that's almost always going to be a teams #3 CB who covers Boldin in the slot. That's a mismatch all day long

I was advocating for torrey before the draft (esp after the NC state game) and was glad we got him in the late second when we did. He is only going to get better, his route running is going to get more crisp, and his timing with flacco is going to improve drastically as well. However, the one thing everyone had against him was his hands. I didn't think he would have a problem catching over head passes, but I was a little worried about passes that were in traffic, where he would have to go across the middle. It's way too early to judge him but so far, he has dropped his share of passes but it seems like one on one coverage hes always open and if flacco can get on that, it'd be a td every time. It's good to know that the flacco to torrey 9 route worked out in the clutch though. Now lets hope they increase him a little in madden, and not decrease flacco after going from a 81 deep throwing accuracy to 74 in the past two weeks.

The INT he caused is an issue, but the catch at the end of the game today, and the one where almost got decapitated last week gives me great hope for the guy.

I could see Torrey growing into a faster version of Roddy White for us. While Torrey's main threat is the deep game right now, his catching in traffic will surely improve dramatically in the coming years. He's not Mike Wallace fast but his ability to change gears is easily as valuable as pure, straight-line speed. Combined with the fact that his frame will allow him to become as strong as Roddy is, we could have ourselves a beast in the making.

it is allways better to overthrow a guy like torrey than to underthrow him. if you underthrow him it will be intercepted because the db is all behind him. flacco isn´t used to throw to a speedster like torrey. i think they will connect on those passes in the future. it will take a little time but it is nice to see flacco throwing the ball to him in the clutch because that shows the trust he has in him.

ofcourse you will miss a few and overthrow here and there. but that is what it is. at the end of the day we will have one of the best deep connection in the nfl. i don´t mind a few drops when he makes those critical ones at the end!!!

When Torrey made that big catch near the end of the game, I practically tackled my bf out of sheer joy.

My words to him were "This is why we drafted him."

He's "falling" cause he's actually laying out for Flaccos overthrown deep ball. If I had a gripe to harp on right now about Mr Flacco, its to get on the same page with Torrey on the go route. He's open every time! Dudes got some speed!
Smith and Flacco hook up all the time in practice. They can't in games because DBs will tangle their feet with his to slow him down and hopefully trip. That is what I see. When he comes out of his break the DB bumps, grabs or trips him which slows him down. All under the disguise of incidental contact. They all do it.

Ray Rice falls or stumbles alot when he is running as well but that is due to the speed in which he is moving. Torrey is falling because of the same reasons and he is diving for passes to make plays for Facco! the young pup is gaining more confidence and swagger every game.

Exactly why you shouldn't label a player a bust or start questioning why he was even drafted two regular season games into his career. He'll make more mistakes this season but if he can continue to create big plays and show improvement, I'll be fine with that.

I am not sure why people expect consistency on deep completions for one guy. Most people who have consistent deep completions have more than one deep threat. OT have one deep threat and expect magic is crazy, just by the nature of a deep throw.

Torrey probably will not have more than 3 or 4 catches in most games just because of the routes he runs and the role he plays for the offense.

There have been consistent deep threats but very few.

I really hope we hold on to Torrey. He is still a rookie but he is showing a lot of potential. He has made amazing crucial catches in the past 2 games. People say Billy won us the game yesterday. I am going to go out on a limb and say Torrey won it for us. Love this guy, amazing speed. Wore my #82 the past 2 days now. I am interested to see how he does next week.

Even if Torrey didn't have a single catch all game, he has changed the way defenses have to play against us. They need secondary help over the top on almost every single freakin' play, allowing other guys to work the middle. When we have enough protection, we're killing teams on those routes and on the screen to Rice. And when even one of those passes (which, thank goodness, are overthrown and not underthrown) clicks, it seems to change the entire game.

I'm wearing turtle shell glasses as well, but whatever. It makes it that much better that I've already cheered for the guy for years and am aware what kind of talent he actually possesses.

He's slowly becoming one of my favortie Ravens. Can't believe we actually hit on a rookie WR! (Knocks on wood).

Hahaha no doubt man, and we didn't even need to use a first.

I remember the preseason bashing this guy took. Then Lee Evans is out and hes the guy. Another bashing for T. Smith. The Rams game turned him into a superstar and now its a love affair. Its hard to find a negative comment on the guy now.

That is because he looked like garbage in the preseason. That is why he took his lumps but now he is improving.

No. Your gonna need a learning curve in the NFL. People gave up on him very early.
To say he was a bust was WAY premature but to say he didn't have a horrible preseason is a lie or delusional whichever you prefer to call it. There should be no learning curve for catching and speed but he could neither catch nor was he fast, so it is accurate to say he was horrible in the preseason.

If Flacco could hit that deep pass with a little more touch ( when I say Touch i don't mean like when he throws up a floater lob pass) I mean hit it accurately in stride then Torrey could have at least 5 more tds a few hundred more yds. This kid gets behind every CB but is always either over thrown by 4 yds or the ball is going behind him
On pass over the middle.....
He bobbles the occasional pass still but he is a lot better than I expected

The most exciting thing about Torrey is the progression he's shown. That tough catch he made against the Jags shows that the kid has hands. Once he get his route running and catches on the slot down, he will be a beast.

Some did. Most said he needed more time. He kind of got thrown into the fire with Evans' injury. He's coming along. He still makes rookie mistakes but he'll get there. I see no reason to think he won't be everything he's expected to be.
