How Bout Torrey Smith?

72 posts in this topic

Torrey Smith came up with an excellent clutch catch this afternoon, putting the Ravens well within field goal range by a mile. Not only was this a clutch catch, but this was also a hands-only catch. These two things show that he's already started to grow as a player with his work ethic. I like this kid and think he has immense potential, so long as we get more consistent on offense.

He also was the cause of an Int...and seems to fall on 80% of his deep routes...but he seems to be growing..

He's "falling" cause he's actually laying out for Flaccos overthrown deep ball. If I had a gripe to harp on right now about Mr Flacco, its to get on the same page with Torrey on the go route. He's open every time! Dudes got some speed!

He's my favorite WR we've drafted so far. I was big on LaQuan, but he dropped a pass that he should have had. And what is with David Reed's returns. I hate to say it, but I think the guy needs to start just taking a knee in the endzone. He looked slow today

Torrey had redemption on that one! If Flacco would have hit him in stride, he had a TD and one time Torrey stumbled and caused an over throw.

Is there one player on this entire team that you like?? I'm serious. Heck, we could bring up a Ray Lewis in his prime highlight tape and you'd be griping on him somehow.

Thank you. I've been saying this all day. If Flacco was more accurate with him, we'd be blowing teams out of the water. But I think it's just a matter of time. I'd love to see it start next week. Torrey can beat almost all of the Squeelers' DB's. I just hope Grubbs gets healthy so Flacco can get enough time to get his timing with Torrey down on throws.

I thought he looked slow also. He didn't have that burst.

I still want to see Doss on the field. To me HE could be the best receiver we drafted, but he just doesn't get on the field.

And seriously, I wanted *gulp* Leonard Hankerson over this dude. Hankerson is barely even making it lol. And Titus Young looks like a one-trick pony. Smith is looking like a dual threat (not only burn people deep, but also go short/intermediate as well) type of player waiting to happen.

Like someone said, I wish Flacco had more of a rapport with Smith on timing, but we can attribute that to a very slim offseason.

Watch, when Flacco and Smith finally do get on the same page with that deep ball.. Evans will be back! smh
[/quote]

That could/would be a good thing IMO. Three deep threats to throw to (Smith/Evans/Dickson) would absolutely make D's respect the speed and play off our recievers, leaving Boldin/Doss open on underneath routes. You put Boldin in one on one man coverage, and he's gonna outmuscle that player covering him.

Yeah he's definitely performing above my expectations so far. I think he could be something pretty special given enough time with Flacco.

I have liked what I have seen out of him, but him and Flacco should definitely put in a little more time to get some added chemistry. If we hit him every time he got open deep we would probably be talking RoTY.

That INT was almost a killer. And a lot of times he gets hung up on his man. But that throw/catch were outstanding.

He is falling because he cannot adjust at full speed. Flacco has thrown good passes to the inside for torrey too.

Yes he has been overthrown but not every stumble is due to that

I agree. When I look at Doss he reminds me of Aaron Hernandez of the Patriots.

I was thinking this as well, then I went back and watched the plays. Torrey slows down when he looks back for the ball considerably and I think (yeah, could be wrong) that is why the ball seems overthrown so badly. Either way that last catch was on the money all the way. Perfectly thrown, great catch. Hope that means whatever the issue has been that it is on the mend.

These types of miscues are easily corrected with time and repitition. As the season goes on,Torrey will only get better with experience.

Definately...not blaming/mad at either. They have a bright future together

Why does every thread about Torrey Smith have to turn into a thread about Doss?

Torrey Smith has shown a lot of talent this season has been burning players all over the field. If he and Joe can get on the same page consistently in the back half of this season he could make a case for ORoY.

I think Cam Newton has enraptured the media enough to be a shoe-in for that. He's earned it, though, not taking anything away from the other Cam...

Anyways, I still wish we didn't have to rely on a rookie as our #2 AND #3. A few of drops/mistakes by them.

I'm not sure why there's been all this clamoring for Doss either, aside from the usual 'I wanna see a shiny toy I haven't gotten to play with yet' sorta thing and that's normal. I'd like to see him get some reps too, for that exact reason hehehehe.

What's really cool if you ask me is the fact that of all the new weapons we have that terrorized the Steelers defense on opening day, Torrey isn't one of them. So when watching their tape of them vs. us this week, they'll find out more about the TEs, but not Torrey. Not that he isn't already on a lot of teams watches because he is after what he did in Stl. and other games, but perhaps he goes off on them next week.

People turn these into Doss threads because they're made they were all wrong about being mad that we drafted Torrey Smith in round 2. "Oh he can't run routes. He's raw talent. He has small hands." Oh I'm sorry are you Mike Mayock? Are you all experts when it comes to the draft and who is going to be a stud every year? I'm gonna lash out at you 'cause I'm a Terp. I have to defend my own. I couldn't believe Anquan Boldin was a 2nd round draft pick when I was reading the story about him before the game on here. And I guarantee you these same people probably got happy when the ball went off Torrey's hands and it was intercepted. They probably felt like they were right about him and then he caught the catch at the end of the game to set up the field goal that won us the game. You can quote this post all you want and hate on me all you want, but I'm not going to give any of you the time of day. Torrey Smith, like Anquan Boldin, is a hard-working football player and unlike T.O., he stays out of trouble. So you all should be proud to have a player of his caliber. Deuces.
