Jags Gonna' Remove Tarps?

43 posts in this topic

A lot of Baltimore fans are a bit salty over the Jags because they got a team and Baltimore was told to build a museum. Jacksonville is geographically a large area but in reality small in population unless you count cows and orange trees.

As funny as that is, that is really just kind of sad. Although with the weather in jacksonville and the cost of beer I would probably tailgate the whole time anyway.

I always have to laugh when this topic comes up. Jacksonville draws more fans then any other team in Florida in the league's 4th smallest media market. This is sad? What exactly this has to do with the game on Monday, I dunno.
What is unfair though is that it seems that the media is only beating the "Jags to L.A. drum", when there are other teams who have more trouble selling out than Jax does. i.e. Dolphins, Bengals, Raiders Plus I do not know of one team that has moved b/c of attendence. It has always been the about the stadium deal. Examples; Colts, Raiders (twice), Rams, Cards, Titans, and yes the Ravens.
Well, the other 3 teams you mentioned are old in NFL terms (40+ years) with well-established fanbases. Cinci has a fairly new stadium as well. I would imagine that while the teams and tickets don't sell, their merchandizing and marketability of players is sill profitable. Plus, in terms of media coverage, the other teams you mentioned are all over the place. Jaxonville has a very small TV market, and is competing for air time with not only the Bucs and Dolphins, but serious contenders in college football i.e. Florida, FSU, Georgia, Miami, Georgia Tech. In the meantime, LA, which has the country's second largest TV market, has no team, which is why there's so much discussion to send a team there. Or to put it more simply, if someone came out and said "Hey lets move the Dolphins from Miami to LA" or "Let's move the Bengals to San Antonio", I could imagine the fans in an uproar, images of Don Shula, Dan Marino, Anthony Munoz, Boomer Esiason, etc. being put up everywhere. With Jacksonville, I don't think you'd see the same sense of passion and urgency from fans. Just my opinion, but I think Jacksonville's lack of history is what makes it such an easy target for speculation on relocation.

No need to talk about small media sizes to us. Hell even though we are MD's team, we aren't even allowed to have the whole state as part of our primary media market. We have to give that to Virginia's team, the Redskins. Then we have the Steelers and Eagles encroaching into us.

Yet we continue to sellout every game and never once has a blackout even been threatened.
