Baltimore Sun Is A Joke

22 posts in this topic

I go to baltimoresun.com occasionally to read some Orioles and Ravens content. What is this crap about them charging for content now? I've read my free 15 pages for the month now I need to pay? I feel like this is ridiculous and they're gonna lose a ton of readers and perhaps money.

I, too, think it's ridiculous, but I understand the reasons.

Print media like magazines and newspapers are suffering from competition from other mediums like the Internet and television. Therefore, for major newspapers like the Baltimore Sun, the only option to replace lost print revenue is to try and find other streams of cash.

I don't agree with The Sun's 15-page-view monthly limit, but I think there's other ways to bring in additional revenue by providing supplemental, premium content online. The content that's currently labeled "Online-Only" isn't anything special. It also doesn't help that regular, run-of-the-mill articles count towards that page-view limit, which doesn't really justify the online subscription price at all.

Apparently, The Sun's parent company is in bankruptcy proceedings, which explains why they need the extra revenue. That said, there's no excuse for having to pay for news these days, especially when there's several other outlets online.

I would imagine paying for on line media viewing is going to become more and more commonplace. I also see lots of tweaks and changes to current pricing policies.

The internet has and continues to change the world we live in.

That said I agree the Sun is a joke but for different reasons. ;)

The Sun is a joke, like the person said above, but not for that reason. All there writers are completely stupid and ignorant.

I don't understand why you can't access the online paper if you already pay for the print subscription. I'm at school so I don't get it, but at home we get the paper. Safe to say that I won't even consider paying for it - I only liked reading Preston's columns.

Preston goes on The Fan on Monday Mornings and reveals his report card anyway.... I will never pay for an online newspaper.

i agree. i get the Sun on weekends and keep getting it to read on the bus, crosswords, coupons, etc. It's unfair for Tribune to ask subscribers to essentially pay twice.

In any case, i really like the Ravens Gameday pullout section on Sundays.

Through University of Baltimore, I have been getting the Sun on Saturdays and Sundays since the beginning of last Fall's semester for only a penny!

My hometown newspaper gives you FIVE articles a month...fifteen is a bargain.

I think it's 15-pages, not 15 articles...

It's 15 pages, although the front pages to each section don't count against that limit.

So for example, you can view the front Sports section of the website as often as you want, but if you were to click on Mike Preston's report card, that counts against your limit, especially if it's a multi-page article.

So, am I to take it that the Sun - the paper which gave us H.L. Mencken - is not worth the paper it's printed on? Or the electrons used to post it online?

I suppose there were critics to John Steadman's old haunt, the News-Post.

In its current state, the Sun isn't worth paying as much as they're asking for the online edition. There's no added value. It's merely taking what was once free but then charging a fee.

in my OPINION, It depends on your political point of view. If you lean one way its worthless dribble, if you lean the other way is hot stuff. I lean towards the side that finds it to be dribble so I do not buy nor read the sun paper.

I suppose expanding upon that would be breaking the rules. ;)

Well, papers are struggling badly. they need to do anything they can to stay a float. It would be bad biz practice to not explore every means possible to stay relevant and or in biz.
