Decosta To Raiders?

37 posts in this topic

Jason LaCanfora says the Raiders are looking to get him to take over as their GM. I know he has turned down previous offers. I hope he stays to take over for Ozzie when he moves on. I know we would all love for Ozzie to stay forever, but how much longer do you guys think until he hangs it up?

That has to do with the Raiders, not Ravens.

Did you even read my post? DeCosta is currently with the Ravens and Ozzie is our current GM.

Wrong section of the forums

Solid productive comment, there.

To the OP, I would expect Ozzie to stay until he stops experiencing this success consistently. However, when you have a good team and FO, you always get your guys plucked away. Just look at all the former coaches that are throughout the NFL. And, Hue Jackson is the Raiders connection to us, but hopefully Decosta hangs around.

Yeah. It would be a shame though. All those years Oz has been grooming him through the draft process and all, to lose him to another team.

Even though Al Davis has passed, I still don't think Decosta would want to get involved with the Raiders. Surely not if Al Davis was still in charge.

RIP Al Davis

I thought DeCosta was essentially assured the GM spot here once Ozzie decides to step down or, otherwise, not be the GM any longer. And I thought he got some pretty big financial incentive to stay, too. I wouldn't expect him to leave.

This. He did get extra financial incentives and was virtually assured of the GM job by Bischiotti whenever Ozzie moves on.

I dont think he's going anywhere. Especially if we go all the way this year. There'd be a few players retiring and I'd image Ozzie might as well. Eric is next man up.

I figure buying a GM is a lot different than a player, they can't be wooed only by money - players do this because they have a very limited amount of time to cash-in. DeCosta's getting good money and, when the time comes, he'll get the promotion and work within a system, with coworkers, and on a team that he knows. Plus, he wouldn't have to move his family and life to the other side of the country.

And, even if it did come down to a bidding war, I don't think the Ravens are too keen to let DeCosta go. The man's awesome.

Precisely, he's also seen the absolute failures of our other front office personnel to other teams. He knows Baltimore places an emphasis on scouting and does things properly. Why leave, you know you'll always be successful here.

I hope we don't lose decosta, when ozzie retires we are going to need someone great to replace him and decosta is that man. I think decosta knows he will be a gm here, he def knows he can be a gm for many other teams, but how long will he wait for ozzie to retire. I remember reading an article where ozzie mentioned he has no plans to retire. If we win a superbowl this year, i highly doubt ozzie would retire. Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Matt Birk, and Brandon Ayanbadejo might retire though (kinda irrelevant). If we win also, pagano might leave for a head coaching job (but lets not get to far ahead of ourselves this is his first year as a DC) but it would be a big blow to lose him, considering all the past great DC's we lost to head coaching jobs.

The Ravens paid a lot of money to keep DeCosta and I don't think DeCosta wants to uproot his family, especially since they've been settled here for so long. Furthermore, with Ozzie likely to step down within the next few years, it shouldn't be long before DeCosta gets the top job.

And quite frankly, if DeCosta is already making GM money as an assistant, I wouldn't leave if I were in his shoes.

Once again, why do teams pick apart us? The Patriots had a ton of success yet I don't see teams going after their FO personnel, what about the Steelers? They never have anyone leave their team? Why is it always us??? Guess teams are just scared of what we can become and figure to take us apart by taking our coaches, and front office personnel before we end up kicking their butt for the next 10 years.

Regarding DeCosta, Berad is right, DeCosta is essentially Guaranteed to be our new GM when Ozzie leaves. I have to think Ozzie will call it quits when Ray retires or after we win 1 or 2 more Super Bowls so it certainly wouldn't be long anyway. He turned down Seattle and Cleveland right? Or did he go to Cleveland and ended up coming back? Well he'll probably turn down Oakland, or at least I and everyone else hopes.

P.S. I hear the Steelers Front Office People would like a "vacation."

yeah thats what i heard too.

I don't think ozzie would want to run a team past 60. I could be wrong and that would be great, but decosta is really smart and I would be hurt if we lost him because you can really see his influence through the draft. Ozzie makes the final decision, but Decosta does some intense scouting and he has a good idea of what kind of players this team needs. I hope he doesn't go to the raiders because that wouldn't be good at all.

It's interesting though, oakland would be a great fit for him but if he stays with us then maybe he's been told that his time here is going to come soon maybe next 5 years?

I'm really curious as to what Decosta will do differently than Oz. What kind of different players he would bring on board oppose to the players Ozzie does.

He's not leaving us. he's a Raven, gets paid like a GM, has an AWESOME franchise, a great mentor, a great owner and a lot of love and respect from us fans.... Nope.

Wow, that would suck. I hope he does not leave I think that Baltimore is a marathon team, and always has been which makes us special. What I mean by that is looking back at 96 we did not draft the flashy guys like Keyshawn, or Eddie George or Marvin Harrison we built for the long haul. We got the second most important position in Football by drafting JO so no matter who our QB was he did not have to worry about his blindside. Then we draft the guy who would be making all the calls on our defense.

Point being we need a great GM because we are constantly in the running because our front office always finds gem's in the draft and rarely misses with the top 3 picks, which is kind of amazing since a lot of teams struggle getting round 1 right. If he leaves it would be almost as devastating as when Ray and Ed leave it would just take longer to notice.

It doesn't sound as though there's a lot of incentive for DeCosta to leave if he's got a great situation here financially with a guarantee of a promotion when Ozzie does retire. It would really hurt us if we're without Ozzie and DeCosta in a couple of years time.

Bringing back one of the great franchises to its former glory has got to be a worthy incentive. I know he has it great here but we can't be sure that he wont leave for the Raiders. I wouldnt hold it against him if he took the job.

Because contrary to popular belief they suck at drafting.

this^^^^^

if he leaves he's not as smart as we thought. Raven's GM is a plum plum plum job for the reasons mentioned and DeCosta's gonna hang around to claim it.

You could make the argument that the Raiders seem to be improving already and DeCosta doesn't seem necessary for them to keep getting better. Either way, neither of us truly know how much that would sway him. Hopefully he isn't interested in leaving us.

I really don't see him leaving. Like most people said, it certainly won't be about the money, and I remember him saying several times that he has unfinished business in Baltimore a.k.a. another Lombardi trophy. Personally, I think the last 4 years have been the most exciting years of our franchise since 2000. We have a franchise QB, a franchise RB, a young and talented offensive line, young receivers that will only get better, and a defense full of young players anchored by one of the GOAT. This team has a chance to do something, this year and in the next few years. Eric helped to build it, and I think more than anything what he wants is to be here to see the results of what he's built.

We must have Ozzie for another 2 plus years. When Ray and Ed retire I would trust him to find a replacement as good as possible
