Matt Birk Fined $5,000

39 posts in this topic

PFT is reporting that Ravens center Matt Birk was fined 5,000 dollars for not wearing a microphone during the Jets game.

They go on to say:
The NFL has mandated the use of microphones for either the starting center or both starting guards in order to enhance television broadcasts. As Florio mentioned before, this mandate hasbrought out the worst in ridiculous paranoia from NFL coaches.

Yeah, lets strap the center up and verbally broadcast to the world our blocking schemes. Hey Birk, I have $2.25 in my pocket to contribute to your fine.

I have 7.34 $ in cash I would put towards that.

I have $5 for you too Birk. But that just seems ridiculous. I guess they still weren't making enough money after all the changes after the lockout this year...

These fines are out of control across the board. The players are right. They need a committee to rule on this stuff and not all the power in Goodell's lap.

That's stupid.... I have $11 in cash to contribute to the fine. I know it's cool and stuff to put mics on players but the offensive line and defensive lines shouldn't have to wear a microphone. If they wanted a offensive player, put it on Boldin, Rice, Torrey Smith, Leach someone else.

What would interior linemen say that would be so interesting? They'd just capture a whole lot of grunting and line calls. Maybe an occasional fart.

He plans to appeal. He said he took it off during the game because it was jabbing him in the neck!

Via Twitter.

Makes sense. If it's hurting your ability to do your job, I think he was more than warranted.

wow. that is really dumb.

I'd like to know what sort of viewing enhancement it provides. I don't think I have ever heard any audio clip from a center during any football game in my life. I have been watching football for 25 years!

Get Goodell outta there!

Not only that, but it's actually also against the NFL rules for a player to accept money to go towards their personal fine.

it was a joke. Birk can buy and sell us all. $5k to him might be a traffic ticket to us.

The NFL Players Association should file a suit against Roger for all the ridiculous fines he hasn't ever handed out. I have to think even the Players Association thinks Goodell is out of control with fines.

Nobody said it had to go to fines, it could be for Diapers and Cheerios, ya know just to be generous. Knowing Goodell though he would try fining us for excessive generosity.

If the NFLPA want to look useful they should start helping their members on these ridiculous fines

Yes, sometimes fines are justified

But not something like this, a right joke
So the union needs to step up
