Windows 8

Anyone else tried out yet?

Here's the download link for those interested:

MS claims that it is even better with resource management than Windows 7, and offers better overall performance, as well as many other new features.

The biggest change that you'll notice immediately is the desktop manager ( *cough* seems to once again be "borrowing ideas from Linux...pretty similiar to the Gnome desktop environment).
Not sure how I feel about it yet, but has some minor annoyances that I am sure will be refined or fixed once the final release is ready.

Just wondering if anyone else is using it and what they think so far?

I used it for about a week. The only reason I stopped was because my games didn't recognize the Windows API or something like that. Priorities lol. It was pretty sweet.

Yeah, it was certainly faster than W7 on the same hardware. I will say that it is much more designed for a touch screen than mouse/keyboard, though they still work well. The boot time had me drooling over it.

I've heard that you could take the specs from a PC from 2001 and you'd be okay... theoretically.

Does it really have that tablet-friendly UI that you can switch to instead of the standard desktop look? That's kinda dumb. But I get it.

Windows 8 already??? I just got a new computer with Windows 7 and already it may be outdated?? These people don't ever let a product be new for like a year before making a new one. It's like the Iphones, every other month it seems there is a new version.

I presume that you can only do a clean install, meaning you can't do an in-place upgrade?
Correct - "Note: You can't uninstall the Windows 8 Developer Preview. To go back to your previous operating system, you must reinstall it from restore or installation media."

The boot time is sick! I get to the login screen in 10 seconds or less. But the catch is that it takes a few seconds for the desktop to load after logging in, instead of instantly. Still though, having a functioning desktop 25 seconds after hitting the power button is pretty badass

Windows 7 was released on Oct 22, 2009. Not even a full two years and a new Windows is already made. I just don't understand why they didn't wait until 2013 to make Windows 8. I mean they aren't even allowing users to get customed to Windows 7 and I guess by now people have and already 8 is going to be out soon. Microsoft is over saturating the market right now by releasing it too soon after Windows 7.

Yeah, and not only that, but I've found that it does not want to install if you are using AHCI mode on your hard drives.
Figured out a way around that though -- start the install in SATA / IDE mode, then on the very first reboot, switch to AHCI before the installation resumes.

Nah, this is definitely a good thing! Touch screens are starting to become mainstream, and W8 tries to enhance that...plus the whole cloud shenanigans...

Well Windows 8 is not here just yet. It is in the Developer Preview mode. Next will be Beta then the Release Candidate. It won't be officially out until somewhere around the summer of 2012.

The reason for pushing it so soon is because everything is moving away from the desktop and going to tablets. Windows 8 is designed with the tablet in mind. The desktop can still be used and it's not that much different from Windows 7.

If Microsoft waited until 2013 to release Windows 8 they would be way behind the tablet OS game.

Yeah really. That's what it all boils down to.

I might try the preview later on my older laptop just to get a feel of it.

I'm still running XP
I run XP on most of my laptops/PCs. Just like it better and it has less "fluff" than 7 and I certainly wouldn't get within 3 feet of Vista!

Hey, for you guys that still run XP -- I am collecting information for personal reasons and would appreciate if you could help me out by answering the following questions:

1. Why do you still use XP? (please be detailed as possible)
2. Which web browser do you use most often on XP?

Thanks!!

Its just what I know, less fluff and frou frou (additional junk), to me its less finicky, faster than any computer I've used with 7, more stable and less cluttered. I use Firefox 95% of the time. I know thats not too specific or detailed, but not really sure how else to describe it. Its just so much easier to load, navigate and operate overall. Plus, I hate change :)

Dont feel bad, so far of all the feedback I've gotten, 64% of the responses I've gotten give that as their main reason as well...

I still use XP as well because I cannot be bothered switching to either Vista or 7. Plus, I see no use in doing it since XP gives me everything I need when it comes to performance and look.

As for the browser, I mostly use Opera.

Now, dont get me wrong....I can/do use all OS's. My main work laptop and PC are both XP, but I have a new quad core, 8GB HP that is Windows 7, an old Gateway my wife uses (when not on her iPad) that has Vista and then the Acer I mentioned earlier with Ubuntu on it.

Thank you.

And it's rare to find an Opera fan! It's a very overlooked, under rated browser.
