Sold On Torrey Smith?

47 posts in this topic

I concur with Fly. Consistency is the name of the game. He needs to continue to learn the route tree and improve his overall game. But the improvement from preseason to now is still impressive.

While he had one catch for one yard against NY, he did occupy Revis for the majority of the game. So if you want to look at it in that regard, he is already playing a role in the offense. He is making defenses honor the deep ball. Once Lee Evans comes back Torrey will most likely get less play-time, but I'm okay with that. Joe seems to be on the same page with Lee more at this point anyway.

Torrey needs to continue to learn and development, and with that hard work will develop a more active role in the offense. I feel like he will have another couple of good plays this season but people need to give him time. He's still pretty raw and needs time to work his way in with the ones.

Not sold yet. One great game out of four so far. Thing is, he's got a whole season to show consistency or at least flash some more brilliance. And that endzone throw is a catch that a Mason/Evans/Houshmandzadeh makes - If I recall, it hit Torrey in the left bicep.

I've always just been happy that we drafted Torrey in the 2nd round and not the 1st like some mock drafts....
I think he has potential to become a solid player but for some reason I really see Laquan williams developing into our stud WR down the line. His toughness reminds me of young boldin or Mike Williams in Tampa bay ( of course he won't have stats of those two early on because he isnt the go to WR because we have depth )

I don't think we need to be sold on him. Bottom line is the Jets were sold on him after 1 game so much so that Revis gave him more attention than boldin....
So the way I view it when lee evans gets healthy, and Torrey goes into the slot WR role in 3 r 4 WR sets he should have the confidence that he can beat a nickleback because he beat Revis but was overthrown... Perhaps this could lead to him. Creating the deep threat down the seam of the defense over the top of safety....

far more than the bicep, it's way behind him; the thing is Joe didn't know Torrey's real speed, and he still misses Mason's speed so his ball is right where Mason's belly.

No, it was off his left fingertips as he tried to turn back for it. I won't fault him for that.

I'm not. All through preseason and the first 2 games, he dropped passes. Week 3 he burned the leagues worst secondary, next week he drops some passes, even though Flacco overthrew them, they were still catchable.

I still remember it bouncing off his bicep. I wished they replayed the game or I could find a picture of it. Not that it really matters, though.

??? You act like Lee is some rookie. Lee is a PROVEN deep threat with 8 years of experience while Torrey is a rookie WR with some things that he still needs to improve on to become consistent.

And yeah, I'm talking about preseason. Lee showed great chemistry with Joe and hauled in some great catches during the preseason. He exhibited almost instant chemistry with Flacco which is very rare considering we got him after the Philly game (which didn't give him much time to learn the offense). He hasn't been productive yet this season because of the injury, but that will surely change when he comes back and starts getting time with the ones. In two wide sets, Evans will start over Torrey. It's as simple as that.

I'd love to see both Evans and Smith spread out at the wideout positions. Boldin and Dickson will get open a lot when the coverage drops back in respect to their speed. Rice has a great chance of gaining his 1000 yards receiving.

I'm definitely sold. He could have had 3 touchdowns against the Jets if Flacco would have got him the ball. Flacco looks like he's not used to throwing to receivers with elite speed. They will be in sync in no time and these long touchdowns will happen. Hopefully against the Steelers. When we are healthy we look pretty stacked at receiver. Boldin, Evans, Smith, Reed, Williams, Doss. Niceee

Sold on torrey? No, but I like what I'm seeing.

That's what counts. Let's give him time before we start any harsh criticizing.

Yes......and No. Right now I would not say he is a decent WR he still has too many holes in his game right now and has not figured out all the little niches that come with playing that particular position. He has finally had the game slow down for him where he can go down there and play football. that is going to be huge going forward, and the fact that he did that to Bevis makes me all the more confident that he has all the tools to be an ELITE WR with a COMPLETE game in a few years.

What makes me say yes ius I have never seen a rookie WR come in with the physical tools that he has and have so many people rave about his work ethic. Most guys that talented try to get by on that alone and Torrey is keeping his mouth shut and trying to learn from other guys who are just like him. I think this is why he will progress rapidly Boldin is known for his work ethic and toughness and Evans for his talent and professionalism (although I think both have those 4 overlapping characteristics) but to have these 2 guys to learn under with his work ethic this kid is as close to a sure bt as you can get with 2 games started.

I still want to see him work and progress but this guy is going to get there, of that I am almost positive, but as of right now he has got some holes in his game.
