Spend Time With Your Pets

22 posts in this topic

Today, i lost my 14 year old Lab / Husky mix. Had him since I was 7. He had arthritic back legs and loss alot of muscle mass on them. Today he couldn't walk anywhere and stayed in the same spot for 7 hours. Tried getting him to stand but it was no use. We had the vet do a housecall and he put him down. Better off that way.

Horrible feeling. Ive lost a person in my life, my best friend.

Please spend time with everyone you love, its very important.

Found this recently on a pets forum, hope it helps:

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found that he was dying of cancer. I told the family that there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt Shane could learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.

Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.

Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why." Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, "Everybody is born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody and being nice, right?" The four-year-old continued, "Well, animals already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long".

Sorry to hear this man! My pup is about to turn 2 and even still, I wonder what it would be like without him! It's a tough deal. 14 years is a damn good run! I'm sure he had a great life!

My cat is 15 and is starting to get badly arthritic in his back legs.

He doesn't seem to be in pain, but I'm not looking forward to that time.

I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. I've had to put down a dog and two cats so far in my lifetime (due to old age and health reasons). It's one of the most heartwretching things a person can go through. My pets are treated as people and I spoil them. For me, it was a loss of a family member, not just a pet.

Sorry you had to go through that, man. I've lost a dog like that. It's not easy. I hope it doesnt dissuade you from getting another one. I love my second dog as much as my first, he is attached to my hip.

There's never enough time with anything we love. There's no such thing as dying "too late". It's always too soon. Believe me.

Sorry to hear about your loss.
My family adopted 2 puppies when I was two, who were siblings. One developed cancer just before I turned 16, and she had to be put down. Her brother is still alive, he's 15 now. He's not getting physically sick, but I'm just waiting for that time to come. Not looking forward to it though.
Sorry, man. Death is one of the hardest things to swallow in life.

Gone through that with a cat and a dog, already. It is really one of the worst experiences you can go through, just be glad for the time you had together - I still reminisce about them from time to time.

Bohb, I'm very sorry for your loss (and I'm sorry for getting to this late). I too have a 14 year old lab who I've had since he was 1 and he's starting to show his age. Needless-to-say, the inevitable decision will come soon (and it's always going to be too soon). Thankfully he's not there yet as he is still a happy dog and able to get around. He just experences bladder control issues and that is stressful on the rest of the family. His bad hips are treated by the doc and I give him pills. I dred the day and I tend to get emotional when I look at him.

Anyway, again, I am sorry for your loss and I cna feel your pain. Dogs are like our children and there is something to be said about the mutual and unconditional love we share with them.

Feel free to IM me anytime if you want to vent. Hang in there buddy.

Very sorry for your loss :(

I love my Buddy so much, and I don't know what I'll do when that time comes... I try not to think about it (He just turned 11 not too long ago).

My dog passed away in july. her name was raven.... and i was working at a summer camp and didnt get to say goodbye. I had her since i was like idk young.... it really hurt. i came home from the adrindacks and at first i didnt notice she was gone. Then my gf came over and we went over in the backyard to see the grave for her. I looked at it for like 5 seconds and couldent take it. A couple weeks go by and we got a gravestone for her and i didnt want to go back to do it. I eventully did and i just was idk it hurt. Also on top of that i have anxiety disorder so i get SUPER emotional. i felt guilty and mad i couldent say goodbye. I havent gone back there since. Yes i know thats horrible. I know how much it sucks to lose a family pet too.

I totally understand where you're coming from. I didn't get to say goodbye to our Sissycat. She had bone cancer in her jaw and Mom let her go this time back in '08 (I was working down in Virginia at the time).

She was the softest shorthair calico with a purr that could knock you asleep from relaxing in about ten seconds flat. She had a gentle soul and absolutely loved to play.

The next time I was home after she passed, I walked into my mom's living room...glanced at the hot water pipes in the corner of the room (for some reason our Sissy loved to sit with her body up against hot water pipes during wintertime ...how she did so without scorching her skin is beyond me) and saw a flash of white. I mean it literally stopped me in my tracks.

I still miss her...think of her a lot when I get stressed out and wish I had my purr therapist here.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I lost my first dog when I was in nursing school. After I got married we bought a puppy on a whim from a pet store, she was an older pup and had been returned and curled up in my lap and went to sleep. Killer was so my dog, she watched over my babies, slept under the crib, would not allow anyone to approach them outside--did I mention she was a fluffy white Bichon Frise? She got breast cancer and we knew the time was coming, I sat up with her the whole nite before she died telling her what a great dog she was, my husband went to take her to the vet and she died before he reached the top of the street--she did not want to die in front of the kids. This happened 8 years ago and I am tearing up thinking of her. Now we have 2 rabbits and another spoiled rotten Bichon who shadows my son. I can't believe Muffin is going to be 8.
