Playbook Development

2 posts in this topic

Just wondering when you have someone like an Offensive Lines coach or Defensive Backs coach become your O or D coordinator. Do they develop their playbooks as they are in lower positions in hopes that they become coordinators or do they become coordinators and build their playbooks. In cases like Hue Jackson or Chuck Pagano, they werent coordinators so they wouldnt have needed playbooks. Once they were promoted they would have needed them. So how do coaches develop playbooks?

I think all coaches (no matter how far away they are from the top) have some sort of set playbook well before they even see the NFL. They probably adjust it according to the roster to make the most out of the individual players.

For example, Webby is our best blitzing CB right now (opinion), but he's also starting. So on certain plays, Pagano would put him in the nickel to take advantage of that, and have a situation where Cary is the RCB and someone like Danny Gorrer would be the LCB, despite the probable difference in skill level.

But he'd never know that without scouting, etc., and the play would've been Cary and Webby on the outside with Gorrer as the blitzing nickel. Could be good, but not as effective.
