Directv & Comcast Internet - Is This A Issue

10 posts in this topic

Was wondering if somebody could answer this question.

I just bought a new house and I decided to go with Satellite TV (Directv), I also had to get Comcast HighSpeed Internet because there are no other options in my area.

Does anyone have this configuration (Satellite TV & Cable Internet)? Is it going to be a wiring problem to have both? I'm sure it can be done, but I just want to make sure it isn't an issue during installation. Because don't they both need to run through the same cables?

Thanks. I"m sure th bottom line is that they both want the $$$, so they will find a way to make it happen.

In order to get Comcast high speed they make you get the basic cable package which works well for me to get TWC local AND if DTV goes out in a storm. Since we got the HD dish it hardly ever goes out. They both enter the house at the phone junction box. Direct TV is much cheaper then cable and they also now have IN DEMAND which is nice. I'm in love with Sunday ticket. We had a ton of issue's with internet and Comcast blocking ports that my husband needs since he is a computer developer and just doing stupid crap that they got sued for, so we switched to FIOS last year. After we worked out some router issues, FIOS rocks. If you have any technical questions PM me and I'll get you an answer from my son or husband.

I'm really NOT looking forward to Comcast's upcoming monthly residential bandwidth limits...

Granted, 250GB is A LOT of bandwidth a month, but I get the feeling that, with my SlingBox, my PS3 online gaming every other night, all the streaming content I watch, and all the other downloading I do, in addition to my brother's bandwidth use, we might get a letter from Comcast eventually. Our use is pretty borderline.

Maybe we might get FIOS eventually...and if it weren't for the fact that NFL Sunday Ticket is so damn expensive, I'd have my parents get DirecTV.

I ordered just the internet package and they didn't say anything about ordering basic cable, I told them I will not be a cable customer, maybe it's part of the internet package. Who knows? Comcast is messed up, you can never get the same two answers from anyone there.

I plan on switching to Fios when it is available in my area. I live in Gaithersburg, and Fios is available in every city around us but Gaithersburg. It's really wierd when you look at the service map, it's like a hole, which is Gaithersburg. There is no evidence that Fios will be available anytime soon here. So I am stuck with Comcast Internet.

I appreciate your input. Thanks.

Maybe capping this is a way for them to be able to offer more HD channels. I heard they were having trouble competing with Satellite HD due to bandwith issues. They are limited in the amount of channels that they can offer.

From what I was told (and I have a relative that works at Comcast), the internet cap is being enforced so as to stop excessive users and to narrow down the people doing massive filesharing or illegal downloading.

Their logic is, someone who uses a lot of bandwidth, is probably doing something with their connection that they shouldn't.

I don't know, maybe I'm overestimating my average internet use per month. But we'll see...

So ofcourse the Comast and Directv guy show up at the exact same time. Akward! It really is like the commercials, they didn't seem to like each other and got in a fight about the wires. But I do have my answer.

Directv uses their own wires but plugs into the main splitter. The main splitter at my house is split into three, upstairs, main floor & basement. Both Comcast and Directv plugged directly into the main splitter.

Directv took two sections (Main Floor & Bedroom floor), and Comast went to the basement. So they do technical run through the same house wires.

If I wanted directv on all three floors, there would have been a need for additional wiring, which would have been a pain to do.
