anybody know when he is expected to return
[/quote]

Educated guess, after the bye against the Texans. High ankle sprains are tough. You'd rather have him 100% healthy so he doesn't damage it further (see Andre Johnson last year).

That would be the min. It could even be longer.

I rather have him back 100% healthy when we visit the Steelers....

I think with Pagano's creative pass rush our secondary will be hidden.....

He needs game time experience though leading up into that game so that would be my only problem with this. Players are not like light switches, they have to gradually build their confidence and game play ability up and weed out the few errors in their game play through game time experience. Like Cary Williams, it's great that we started him from Day 1 b/c his progression will show stronger and stronger with each game with knowing things he can and can't do, how to guard a particular player or how to defend when going up against different QBs, etc.....

Jimmy Smith safe bet to return after the BYE...he will help our secondary a LOT...but again I think we can go 3-1 into the BYE which will be good for us to get healthy, work on our timing on offense..

As Joe said last night, its not about getting the playoffs anymore, we can do that, we are aiming for much better things...a SB victoruy

Ankle injury is tough to recover, but with today sport medical staffs injured players seem to recover faster than expected. I understand in game experience for better communication is needed for Jimmy as we're getting closed to divisonal opponent. I think it's best to have good-to-go thumps up from our medical staffs before we're planning on using Jimmy again.

Cary and Webb are getting better each and every game which I like alot.....

They said he was aiming for a return after our bye week. That would give him about 5 weeks of recovery and he's already off his crutches. I really hope he can get back for the Houston game because we all seen what Britt did on Cary and Britt ain't kno Andre Johnson...so we will need all the secondary help we can get for that game.

5 weeks of recovery, yes; but also 5 weeks of not playing/practicing. I would not anticipate he would get that much playing time in the first couple games when he returns. I am going to guess that maybe he starts light practice during the bye week. Maybe active against the Texans but I would say last on the depth chart for that game. Against Jax maybe some special teams play and seeing more time as CB but prob not top 3 on depth chart.

My guess would be seeing significant time against Cardinals with chance to win starting spot for the next week against Steelers.

after the BYE week...which is after the Jets game...we should beat the JETS and go into the BYE at 3-1...

afterr they BYE guys can get healthy and hopefully we will have most of our guys back out there...Jimmy Smith will start at some point or he could ease himself back in slowly and play the slot receiver...

I am guessing you are refering to me saying he will probably start back on special teams before taking a CB role. Well yes he did get hurt on special teams but he did not get hurt because of special teams. He got hurt because that is what happens when you play football sometimes.

LBs and CBs almost always play on special teams too and I do not think Smith is immune from this. If he gets hurt playing CB should he not play that? I would guess your answer to that is no because CB is his job. Well right now special teams is also his job. He will play both until A) He becomes too valuable as a starting CB (which he has not proven yet) and B we have the depth where we do not need him at special teams. With Nakamura possibly out for a while B is looking not as plausible.

If someones interested in learning more about ankle sprains in the NFL, here's a (pretty old) power point presentation

Really hope he gets back soon, only thing i dont get is why everyones so scared for Jimmy to return to special teams, yet Webb returns punts. Both are starting caliber cornerbacks for this team and i understand Jimmy has the potential to be our best CB in a year but webb is still a big part of this secondary. Also too be honest i really dont like Jimmy filling in as a slot cornerback. Most of those guys are shorter and quicker and Jimmy is just a little too tall to be able to move fluidly with those kind of guys...imagine jimmy and wes welker...i really dont like jimmy in that kind of situation

Ha so you see him playing special teams and getting injured on special teams completely unrelated. Well I guess that is one theory.

And you can prove how valuable you are when your gone almost as much as when you are there. As illustrated from the tennessee game or the St. Louis game that we could have definitely used his help, so I would say he is pretty valuable as a starting corner, maybe britt's performance or the St. Louis Wr's was not enough for you but i would think to most of us it is pretty evident that he is very valuable to our CB corps and chucks schemes.

And if he got injured playing CB then at least we reduce the chances significantly of him getting hurt, and yes he is doing what we drafted him for. In the meeting room I did not see Chuck saying , "Are you ready you are going to be playing special teams?" I think the way I heard it was,"Are you ready to guard number 1 corner's?"

Jimmy just tweeted that his ankle is doing way better and he is getting closer to his return. Like we all said he should be back after the bye, but this is good news.

Foxworth and Evans have shown us that being back and being ready for full speed football are two different things.

I am not trying to start an argument, I actually hope you are right. With that said, I will not be surprised if he plays special teams when he comes back. Plenty of starting corners and safeties around the league play special teams as well as their main position. Remember he has to ease back into playing and contribute where he can at first and that may be with special teams.

And to answer your question, no I do not see him being injured and playing special teams unrelated...since he got hurt on special teams. I am just saying he could have gotten injured playing any position. We should not limit ones playing time or contribution on the field with fear of injury (unless they are a franchise asset which Smith is not yet).
