Where Did All The Flacco Haters Run Off To?

You forgot Matt Stafford and Cam Newton.
Statistically that may have been the best game of his career. Now, looking at the competition, lets not get ahead of ourselves. This is the reason you have Flacco haters in the first place, because some of the Flacco supporters just go wild, after a game where he should put up big numbers. Not saying you are one of them just venting. Not taking anything from Joe but this game was easy to predict him going off in. I'll let you in on another secret, he should be able to do it again against the Jets who have traveled to Oakland, now back to Baltimore to take us on at home.

nice.. Total qbr.. Thats the stat thing that everyone hates right? Well thats cool i guess.. Lets see him dismantle the jets and he'll get the wide respect he has deserved for awhile
Yep, that's the one everyone hates haha. I came up with my own QB score that takes into account what the player does outside of throwing the ball (sacks, yards lost, rush attempts, rush yards, rush touchdowns, fumbles lost), because people seemed to like (at first) the idea of a score that isn't just a "passer rating", but then they didn't seem to like the subjectivity of the scores that ESPN introduces, so I worked on a simple rating that would encompass those other statistical facets without having any subjectivity. It's derived from passer rating, but introduces the other stats to make it a simple qb rating, as I like to call it. "Simple" because it's more or less an extension of the existing passer rating, not some complicated new formula. Only I had it work out to a score between 0 and 100, because that seemed logical and it nicely differentiates it from passer rating.

I don't know if I'll post the results here, though. For now, I'm happy with ESPN's score because it rightly accounts for the fact that when the game mattered, Joe was nigh on *perfect*, and the hit that his stat line takes on completion percentage and his lost fumble only really occurred during a commanding lead and were therefore irrelevant to the game outcome. My score isn't as friendly in considering Joe's mid 50's completion percentage and his lost fumble and couple of sacks because it just objectively uses the stat-line numbers.
As a result, Joe isn't #1 in the week based on my rankings (he's #9, actually).

I think one of the greatest misconceptions in society is that being "negative" and being "realistic" are synonymous. Here's a great quote: "The optimist believes we live in the best of all worlds while the pessimist fears that this is true."

Similarly, there is a difference between being critical of Flacco in hopes that he will improve on his (considerable) success and declaring that he's not capable of taking us to the superbowl because of occasional poor play.

It is much easier to be a pessimist than to be an optimist, but nothing good ever comes easy.
Wow great quote plus one thank you. Glass half empty half full. Everyone wants Flacco to play well, just have different ways of getting him there. Some have the Harbaugh not throwing you under the bus approach, and some have the Mike Ditka in your face, I'll tell you how i feel approach. Both work

its the same thing every week, and like i said after the Titans game..its a TEAM game, the OL played better this week..they got the run game going when we needed to and Joe had time to make his reads and throw the ball...

Look at Matt Ryan and Tom Brady...Brady cost his team the game, 4 INTS!!!!!

its week to week in this league and the QB takes alll the blame even if its not warranted

Takes all the blame? He threw 4 picks one for a touchdown. Yeah that would be on the quarterback.

Flacco hater's!? We put up good numbers in this game across the board, it was a great day vs a sorry team, SORRY but at the same time we had a great day vs a good team also. We are only 3 games in and I want to see more vs better, looking forward to going to Sunday's game to see it all live. I want to see the Ravens open up running lanes for Ray Rice by throwing the ball down field first and then ramming it down the Jet's throat!

If Joe gets protection against the Jets, we will dominate. We've witnessed what Joe can do with time and with receivers who can actually get open!

Not sure if it's been mentioned, and I never hated on Joe, but for his own health he really needs to slide more at the end of a run.
I thought he was going to get injured on Sunday, he got nailed for not sliding on one run, I'll bet he's got bruised ribs.
Get down Joe!
Again, he showed that he is mobile.

I've been a stats-aholic since this season started, and here comes another stats-filled post for all of you.
This one is going to go into a bit of detail on how Joe has performed versus the team's he's played against in comparison to how those teams have played against the rest of the QBs they've faced this season.

So in other words, we're looking at how Joe did against the Steelers vs. how the Steelers have done against all other QBs besides Joe. This should give us an indication of whether he's performing better than or worse than an average QB against each team he has played against.

The team numbers are, in case this isn't clear just from looking at it, the sum of the numbers posted by QBs *against* the team in question, not counting what Joe did against them. So for the Steelers, we're talking about Kerry Collins, Curtis Painter, and Tarvaris Jackson.

I am responsible for all stat-gathering, and all stats come directly from NFL.com.

Pittsburgh Steelers (Excluding Joe Flacco)
38 / 69, 312 Yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs, 6 Sacks, 35 Yards Lost
3 Rush, 12 Yards, 0 TDs, 1 Fumbles Lost
Passer Rating: 66.8

Joe Flacco (Against Pittsburgh Steelers)
17 / 29, 224 Yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs, 1 Sack, 9 Yards Lost
0 Rush, 0 Yards, 0 TDs, 0 Fumbles Lost
Passer Rating: 117.6

Tennessee Titans (Excluding Joe Flacco)
41 / 63, 348 Yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs, 3 Sacks, 16 Yards Lost
5 Rush, 10 Yards, 0 TDs, 1 Fumbles Lost
Passer Rating: 76.7

Joe Flacco (Against Tennessee Titans)
15 / 32, 197 Yards, 1 TDs, 2 INTs, 3 Sacks, 13 Yards Lost
0 Rush, 0 Yards, 0 TDs, 0 Fumbles Lost
Passer Rating: 51.2

St Louis Rams (Excluding Joe Flacco)
33 / 62, 410 Yards, 4 TDs, 1 INTs, 6 Sacks, 39 Yards Lost
15 Rush, 85 Yards, 0 TDs, 1 Fumbles Lost
Passer Rating: 88.8

Joe Flacco (Against St Louis Rams)
27 / 48, 389 Yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs, 2 Sacks, 4 Yards Lost
9 Rush, 29 Yards, 0 TDs, 1 Fumbles Lost
Passer Rating: 103.6

PIT + TEN + STL (Excluding Joe Flacco)
112 / 194, 1070 Yards, 6 TDs, 3 INTs, 15 Sacks, 90 Yards Lost
24 Rush, 107 Yards, 0 TDs, 3 Fumbles Lost
Passer Rating: 77.0

Joe Flacco (Against PIT + TEN + STL)
59 / 109, 810 Yards, 7 TDs, 2 INTs, 6 Sacks, 26 Yards Lost
9 Rush, 29 Yards, 0 TDs, 1 Fumbles Lost
Passer Rating: 91.9

Joe significantly outperformed the Steelers versus how others have performed against them, as well as substantially outperforming the average against the Rams. His performance against the Titans on the other hand was significantly below average.

Overall, Joe is outperforming the average numbers against the teams he has played against by quite a bit! The average non-Joe QB playing against the three teams Joe has played has a 77.0 rating, while Joe has a 91.9.

First, congrats to the Ravens defense for being #4 on this list.
Second, let's take note that Joe has so far faced off against the #2, #9, and #23 defenses, and put up decisively above average numbers against them.
And he's got the #1 coming up next Sunday night!

All I'm saying is a " where's all the Flacco Supporters now" thread could've been made last week after the titans game.

The board after a Ravens victory and a good game by Flacco is laughable...we become the scariest team in the world with the most underrated talent...and then a game like last week comes and the board does a complete 180 and reality sets in.

I'm just trying to keep the board on the path of realism and not homerism...it was the Rams..I can't take another 7 days of the Ravens are the best.. we should destroy the Jets 27-0...cause we've done all of that already tthis year
We don't need a "where are all the Flacco supporters" thread because the haters come out in force making bash Flacco threads. You can check any one of those threads and you will find not only the OP there but quite a few of us taking some heat for our QB. Constantly pointing out that no QB is perfect. Not even Peyton and Brady.

What I would like is an explanation form all of the Flacco "haters". You can say that he's young and mistake prone, but what I can't figure out is a) why you think he's not capable of being the Ravens starting qb, and B) if he isn't, who is? Who out there would you have in place of Joe Flacco? Because as far as I can see, any quarterback I think who could come in right now and outperform Flacco already has a starting job. Oh, and all but one of them has a Superbowl ring.

I'm not a Flacco hater at all. But we have to see him do this against a good defense like the Jets too! Consistency is his issue. What happens when the gameplan doesn't work? Is he gonna try forcing passes again like in the Titans game?

We'll find out next week.
I'm pretty sure Joe put up 3 Td's on a pretty good defense week 1.

you're absolutely right about one thing ... I should have started this thread right after he pounded the Steelers, instead of waiting until he destroyed the Rams.

I assume by "looking great one week and terrible the next" you mean that Flacco will occassionaly have an off game. That is true as well, every QB in the league will have a few bad games each season.

Tom Brady never has a bad game....oh wait......does he ?

Haha, I love a good statistical analysis. Joe has something around the 12th best QB rating right now, but he's had to go against the top two pass defenses in terms of yards (as of now). On a side note, I looked into it and our defense has 5 INTS against QBs with 7 picks total. That means we picked off QBs 2.5 times more in 3 games than other teams did in 6, or "we pick off QBs 5 times more than the average team so far". That number will change soon, because Sanchez already lofted 4 bricks into the air and we'd have to pick him off 6 times to be consistent.

And here they come (actually, they showed their faces last night, but whatever.....)

As a Flacco supporter (but not a blind homer), I can say Flacco had a very poor performance last night. The drops and needed throw aways didn't help, but there's no excuse for the showing. With that said, IT IS NOT a continued affair with him, so no need to go off the deep end. Even though some of you will (and you show your ineptitude for the game while doing so), let's remember we won the game!!

Agreed 100%. If we know anything about Joe it's that he could well come out and play excellent football for the next 8 weeks. He's really good at bouncing back from statistically bad performances. He's got the bye week now to focus and get some key parts of the offense back like Grubbs and Evans (I don't even know how long his injury will keep him out for). I expect he'll be more than ready to tackle the Texans in just under two weeks time.

Agreed...the win is the most important thing....

But since this is a thread on Flacco...I must say that was down right tedious to watch...and everytime you think he's got a grip on things..he.shows he doesnt.

Completely aware of the difficulty of passing against those DBs....but come on....

No excuse for anyone, agreed!

No excuse for Flacco.
No excuse for the ST's gaffe.
No excuse for the player drops.
No excuse for the miscommunications.
No excuse for the play calling at certain junctures.

See, everyone can have a poor performance :) (well, minus that ridiculous defense)

Won't get an argument from me...

I think all of those drops totally disrupted any chance of Joe developing any sort of rhythm on offense. He'll bounce back against Houston.

flacco started off very well last night... Then he had a couple of catch-able balls dropped or bounce of WRs during that 11 pass in-completion streak (that Collinsworth the consummate hater see the Ed Reed attempt block punt where Collinsworth cried next 6 min of game , and Ngata forced fumble where he start saying Ngata should be flagged for dropping his helmet on Sanchez ) Collinsworth never pointed out a few passes were on target either dropped, batted down, or right off finger tip of Wr

I think those crossing patterns with Pitta and Dickson were working well....
He did throw a potential TD pass behind Torrrey Smith in the endzone, but I thought that was still catchable as well, I think T.Smith loss a little focus when the Jet Safety appeared to be in line for an int but slipped...

I didn't care that Flacco was 8-27 going into half time but I was wondering to myself, why do we have such a horrible pass:run ratio, we had 27 passes only 11 runs (8 rice, 3 williams) at halftime, and we had 13 and 20 pt leads within the half and still continue to throw pass after pass stopping the clock..... I was hoping to run more to open up some playaction passes down field... Because I felt that we had true advantage with our TEs over their LBs...

I was pretty shocked at the number of pass attempts. I know they were expecting us to run Ray early and often, and the strategy paid off in the first quarter. But we didn't really change things up (Cam?) when they adjusted. A few drops here and there, some deep balls that were not on target, combined with a strong secondary spelled problems for the passing game. I would have liked some slants or short stuff to just get in a rhythm. And more rushing attempts.

I know the completion % is ugly, but I think this is some growing pains with the young guys. Can't replicate real game experience. We will get better IMO, hopefully explosively better. I'm not too down on Joe for this game although the stat freaks will hate it. You can't get better at throwing the ball unless you do it more often I suppose.

Also, on the pick-6, Ray stopped his route. Joe threw it to where Ray would have been had he kept moving.

Thank God for our D last night and for little Ray. If we had been playing a better run defence and had to air the ball out all night we would have been in big trouble. No completions in the 2nd and 3rd because of short and long passes and still managed to win large?? Thats a crazy string of luck I don't want to keep riding. I think Joe is taking too much time running around like Ben trying to make heroic throws. He needs to tuck that ball in tight when he commits to running with it. And long bombs aren't the answer when the game is close (before Webbs int. TD). I'm glad he's come out of his shell and is showing some arm but he's got to be quicker with the throws and smarter when he realizes he has no options. Just sayin. Love you Joe GO RAVENS!!!
