Aaron Wilson recently tweeted about the breakdown of Ngata's contract from a salary cap standpoint:

Haloti Ngata salary-cap figures: 2011 ($7.1 million), 2012 ($10.4 million), 2013 ($11.5 million), 2014 ($16 million) and 2015 ($16 million).

I found this interesting because it frees up quite a bit of cap space for this year, but it is very backloaded in the last 2 years. 16M is a huge cap figure for those 2 years.

To me this could me a few things. Maybe we will try to extend Ray Rice or Ben Grubbs this season and pay him a lot of money up front now that we have some cap space. Or perhaps the FO wanted to create some cap space to bring in a veteran WR or CB.

I guess it just surprised me to see such a small cap figure for this year when in essence we have already moved past the time when it would be useful in free agency.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Cap will be significantly higher in the later years.
/\/\//\ What he said, as back loaded as it may seem, when the cap raises it will equate to what we are pating him for the first two years. Also the vast majority of his bonus is paid out in the first 2 years so we can use that to offer more bonuses to people we resign.

Also bear in mind that as crappy as it is to say Ray and Ed will be off the books by the time that his last couple years roll around. I actually have to just stand in awe of how well they thought this out.

So here is the real question was it worth all the heartache of the wait to know that this is probably the best deal anybody could have put together for a player of his caliber??

SIDE NOT: The steelers are going to be hurting in the next few years on the cap space.

So he's gettin 40million in his first two seasons yet they are thee lowest cap figures. Does the cap figure relate in any way to the salary they get that particular year?

Im with Arnie on this one, it doesnt make much sense to me, im not sure Aaron is exactly right on this. My assumptions were 40mil guaranteed first 2 years, and backend was light. And that he would make significant bonuses this year and next that wouldnt affect the cap to much. Like 10mil bonus/10mil actual salary each year for years 1/2. which opens up cap room for grubbs, flacco, rice in 2012/2013

The way its structured I believe he has like a 25M signing bonus and a 10M bonus for next season, but his base salary for this season and next are very small, like 1-2M. By the end of the contract the base salary is around 8M that's why the cap figure is much larger.

I was a little surprised the way it worked out because I don't see the need for extra cap space this season, but I guess it gives us some wiggle room.

Aaron also reported some time ago that the cap is expected to jump significantly in 2013.

yeah the cap is always going up, why it went down this year is kind of weird ?

I think it was an attempt to even the playing field, top teams had to purge and skip re-signing marquee players.

I'll add onto what some other people said. Supposely with the new TV deals in 2013 as part of the CBA the cap will go up ALOT so the players get paid more. It's not suppose to be a normal 4-5 million dollar jump but closer to 10+ million.

EDIT-

Also by that point maybe reed/lewis may be retired by then as well would frees up a ridiculous amount of cap room too
