I was actually thinking more than one year, but I like that idea! This way we could at least have him for this season... Wouldn't we have to take over his existing contract? Philly's price is a 2nd round pick, so this could also imply he stays for more than one season for such a premium... I wouldn't mind seeing this:

Samuals/Webb, Pollard, Reed, Williams/Smith

2 gamblers in 1 secondary doesn't work.

That's not even delving in to the plethora of other problems trading for him would bring.

I'd also much rather re-sign Flacco, Grubbs and Rice than acquire Samuel.

We're going to have to pay Rice as a top 5 HB in the NFL, which is not going to be cheap. He's likely going to get in the 50 range depending how many years we sign him. Flacco contract amount hinges on this year, if he does more of the same he's done he's going to get a middle of the pack contract unless he's out of his mind.

I see all of your points, but we can make moves/cuts next year to keep our guys... to increase our odds this year, that secondary needs a shot in the arm! Jimmy is full of potential but in experienced... what if he needs a year or two to become a true shut-down? (If he can stay off special teams,

Samuals can help bring him along... Plus with communication in the secondary, I think we will be just fine with the gambling... I think it needs to be done. Look at the Wr's we face this year, and think about our pass rush.

Even though Philly is feigning interest in trading Samuel, he isn't going anywhere, mark my words. As I have said time and time again, if your team has Super Bowl aspirations, you really need 3 starting quality corners with as many multi-receiver sets that are trotted out there anymore. The Eagles currently have that and they are one injury away (how many cornerback injuries have we already seen this year around the league?) from losing that. if they're serious about "Super Bowl or bust" this year, they'll keep him.

Not to mention Ray Rice will be a free agent (perhaps a UFA if I remember right on this new CBA, at least 4 years of service you are a UFA now if your contract is up), not to mention Ben Grubbs will be a unrestricted free agent too and we saw how badly the offense missed him in the first game he has missed in his career last week...so to answer your question: use the cap space on our guys next year.

That's a great point. I like Asante, but I just wouldn't know how it would work if Reed and him both guessed on the same play, and QB's are burning us for 50+ yard TD's. I think it'll all fall into place, we need to save all the money we can for our three major FA's next year. I don't want to see one of them go, so I think it'd be wise to stay with what we have. Jimmy and Carr will both be back soon, and I'm sure that a lot of people know that I don't like Foxworth at all, but I'm willing to stay patient. Should have pushed hard for Wilson.

Save, save, save we have 3 pro-bowl guys we are going to have to sign in the very near future.
Interested to know who your 3 pro-bowl guys are. Rice definitely, Grubbs maybe, and ????

Well truth is, I've never really like Samuel ... always felt he was overrated. But, if we were able to release/trade him after this season and not take a cap hit for it, as well as get him for no more than a 3rd, then sure, why not?

My only issue is that, if Asante Samuel wants big money, I don't think it'd be prudent to shell out for one guy when there's still at least two other guys that need to be locked up in Ray Rice and Joe Flacco. That's in addition to other guys who'll be hitting the market and guys who'll earn justifiable pay raises.

While the team definitely has concerns in the secondary, one guy won't make so much of an impact, especially if he gets injured. This isn't an Ed Reed-caliber player we're talking about. Samuel might be talented, but you're playing with fire when it comes to throwing big money at one free agent to solve one problem when there's more problems to be resolved.

True but generally we build through the darft and right now we are the 5th youngest team in the NFL, and we are still a top contender. I would rather our young guys get game reps now to figure out what works for them, for their skill set.

If we can get some of those young guys reps and by the time they have to step into the limelight they will be a semi-seasoned vet and will be able to carry the mantle alone without a cornerstone leaving.

First off, Samuel isn't a shutdown corner, he's a gambler. We've already got our gambler in our secondary. We don't need another. Plus, if we lose any of the trio of Rice, Flacco or Grubbs (I don't think it's even possible we'll let Flacco or Rice walk) then the offense loses a huge step.

oh sorry, should have have clarified, Grubbs has already went to the pro-bowl so he is on there, and I believe that this will be the year Flacco can not be ignored. With peyton out, that leaves tom, and phillip and then who else.

If Cam can call like he did at Pitt and forget about Tennesse then we SHOULD have a very explosive offense coming out of the bye week, so Flacco is my third.

I always thought of Asante as a shut down, in fact he is in the top teir of Cb's... After Titans picked us apart like crab legs, im very surprised more of us wouldn't want to go for a vet CB thats proven... Lets look at our guns again, maybe im missing somethin:

-Foxworth= Never was more than a #3 in MY opinion, looks worse than usual due to rust'rehabing knee back to game speed

-Carr= a decent nickl/dime guy, but as a 1 or 2 he Looks like Fox's twin

-Webb= Good tackler, but a nickle guy- not getting it done gainst #1's

-Williams= I like Cary, first time starter and never got any reps so he is almost in the same boat as a rookie in terms of game speed, let alone playoffs. has great physical tools and not afraid to tackle/hit. Good kid, but still raw

-Smith= Rookie who was a top prospect coming out of the draft this year... he needs TIME (after he returns)

Asante could help us right now, and groom the pups... Let next year take care of next year. The time is NOW Bird Gang! Asante has ALOT of playoff experience as well as numerous pro-bowls.

Please rethink my proposal

Didnt we just have another "trade for asante" thread that got locked?

I would use the cap room to start negotiating with Rice or Flacco....

We don't need Asante.

Jimmy will be back after the bye, Cary will take the number 2 and Webb will play nickle. After that we have Carr and hopefully Chykie Brown. Foxworth is last resort....

how do you know we freed up 7 mil? to pay ngata 40mill over two years thats on average 20mil a year, i know the salary isnt the cap hit, but i cant see how this deal frees up much cap in its first two years?

OK out of fairness I considered it, but still the whole we have to win now thing makes us sound desperate. I think we still have a very competitive team and could still win the big dance.

I think the reason we are competitive with young guys is because our FO always looks to the future and never feels pressed to make a move or else... that is know way to try and run a football team.

Asante could help us this season, but really the move would hinder us in the long run, and we are trying to build a dynasty. Getting a whole bunch of FAs and old guys will delay the development of younger players, and would have a negative effect. Just my 2 cents.

I get it, I just hope Webb, Williams, Smith and Brown can get it done... As for Carr and Fox... lets just say I wish we kept Wilson and dumped BOTH of them. I guess Im tired of having the January heart ache, plus Ed and Ray may not get another shot... mainly Ed.\, he's never had a ring. Greatest saftey of all times!

I would love to have them get another ring, but they are both team first guys and understand our mentality. And Ed is the greatest ever in my opinion, and I think he has 2 or 3 left and by then he will be sporting a ring.

And yes I would take Wilson over Fox any day.

You and me both bro... Its a sad situation in the secondary when they expect a rookie to be a #1 lockdown guy... Its said that even Revis island took 3-4 years... I just hope Ozzie surprises us just one more time.

The way our [pass rush looked, Hasselbeck had ALL day

Well if there is one thing I have learned about him, is he never stops putting in work, he is always looking for ways to improve the team, and rarely misses.
