MERGED: What Would You Say If Ngata Did The Haka

48 posts in this topic

I was thinking about the D for the ravens doing something Haloti knows from his grandma , The Haka , imagine him teaching the whole D to do it before the game .

So what are your thoughts on the Haka and the ravens here is a link to it

The Haka's cool and all but there are two reasons why I don't really want us to do it:

1, I don't really like the idea of us stealing the idea from the Pacific Island rugby union teams;

2, Ray's already got a pre-game dance. We don't really need another one.

The Haka is steeped in tradition for the people that do it. I think it would be a little disrespectful if the Ravens adopted it! It's more than just a dance to those Nations.

When Ravens were on Hard Knocks, Billick introduced Edwin Mulitalo, offensive lineman

Just before the five minute mark

It would have to be done in a respectful manner. An ancient custom is not something just to be copied to pump up a crowd

No. Leave the Haka for the All-Blacks..... and before someone calls me racist, that the name of the New Zealand Rugby team.

Besides, most people dont "get" it and would laugh at us doing such a "stupid" dance.

If he wants to do it fine that is his heritage, if it is something that helps him elevate his game even more great. As for the team though no, generally the haka is a traditional dance used by tribes of the maori and their descendants and honestly most people wont "get" the significance of it.

Its awesome to see, but can you imagine the Ravens doing this to the Steelers before a game? We'd be a laughing stock.....

Yes, and the All Whites are the New Zealand soccer team.

I would much prefer to do something that other teams around the world aren't utilizing.

Like everybody should do the Ray Lewis dance during warm ups. You see all the Ravens reach for a piece of grass at the same time and take a bite out of it. Then Bam! Ray Lewis dance across the board. Followed by a "Who's your Daddy" yell.

They may laugh... that is until Haloti got more amped than normal. They know if he puts on teh war helmet they are going to be down one more o lineman or running back.

People would die from the sheer awesomeness, I can barely stand to watch one of them without going out on the field and kicking woodley, harrison, or clark in the nads.

Like has already been said, it's too traditional and meaningful to the natives of the countries that use them already for us to use them just as an intimidation tactic. We should stick to Baltimore tradition instead.

Now for one of the more intense pregames of all time... the haka vs the sipi tau:

No way the Ravens do the Haka... it's a sacred Maori war dance. Not a Football warm up.

Any other ruggers on these boards?

Yep right here. I currently play rugby for the University of Kansas. Also on that note, since I'm 4 hours from St. Louis, I'll be there on Sunday!

But as far as the haka is concerned, definitely leave that to the All Blacks. It's their thing.

Nice man. I played open side in college... torn ACL & med+lat menisci, boxers fracture (guess how haha), and herniated disk... never regretted it for a minute.

Saturday's a rugby day, but have fun on Sunday and rep us well.

What if Haloti Ngata said "Hey Coach, instead of me dancing like a fool, you know what would pump up our team? Getting Kindle and Kruger more involved along with Art Jones."

Rather that scenario unfold.

it would not make him look like a fool it is sacred to his people and is the embodiment of a warrior.

Now as to your suggestion that would be pretty awesome too, I think the latter would help us more than the former.

University of Hawaii do it, and i must say seeing it in person is pretty damn intimidating. But Ngata probably being one of the only players of Polynesian descent (beside Mana Silva who's on PS) would be kinda of weird.

The police in Utah certainly don't like the idea of the Haka!

Watch the video. The "dancers" were blocking the opposing players from leaving the field and the officer warned them numerous times to "make a hole". They got pepper-sprayed, they made a hole.
