Ravens Defense Helping Opposing Players Up?

I have played football in college, and for the all-army team, we always showed sportsmanship to each other (helping them up, recognizing good plays etc.) And for those 3 hours it is us against them but just because you are on opposing sides, it is not like lives are on teh line where it is kill or be killed. As much as I love the game that is exactly what it is a game.

And yes it is rough and it is violent, and you have to have a mean streak in you but those should be restricted to the confines of the play, if not you look and sound like a James Harrison (whom actually displayed sportsmanship) As much as the media hypes things up very few on field relationships are personal, there are some but it more because of what type of person that is and the moral values of both parties involved not what jersey they where.

You can bet when these athletes go home they teach their children sportsmanship and a level of class to be displayed out of respect for the game.

That's cool man. What position did you play? Just curious.

FB/DE, FB was what I was slated as and by far the best at, but injuries made us change a few things on D (sounds eerily familiar)

Back on topic though, there's nothingeally wrong with it either way, I ust prefer the tough "us against them" mentality.

No there is not but the way I have always looked at it is, lets say you are the rams and you are getting your faced shoved in the dirt or you need help up and just see guys walking past you, or for lack of a better term "A-whole" (best I could to keep it clean) what happens when the rolls are reversed, what happens if we become the whipping boy I would still like to be shown respect since I have put blood, sweat, and time into my performance and think that hard work should be respected.

I understand both schools of thought and as long as the "us against them" thing is not dirty there is nothing really wrong with it, just expect either approach to be reciprocated.

And good luck, I was a glorified lineman so I get it but hitting people was always teh best part of football for me anyway I dont care about the TD as long as I got to hit somebody.

The Ravens mentality has always been us against them . I didn't see that in the Titans game .

I honestly see nothing wrong with helping the opposing team up. I dont see how that classifies us as "soft", because at the end of the day, this is still a GAME, that we were all taught to show sportsmanship and all that stuff.

I played football in high school, and we helped guys up, did that make us soft? No, no it did not. Sometimes (i think, and I'm sure other people do) maybe we find TOO many reasons as to why we lost a football game, instead of accepting the fact that the Titans were just a better football team that day.

And then after we are done pointing out what went wrong, move on to the Rams. We can't dwell on this game forever, we have 14 more games to play (before we hopefully make the playoffs).

BTW none of this was meant offensive/to be rude. just stating my opinion.

Im a good sport, and I encourage sportsmanship, (no dirty tactics) but that dont mean start a happy hour out there when we getting our @@@ handed to us!

It takes a certain mentality to play this game ... I want them to make the other team PAY! Hit them so hard they dont want to get hit again! If we weren't playing soft it wouldn't have looked so bad i guess, but they were down right more physical than us and was talking smack between plays. It just wasn't the time to be friendly in MY opinion. I lost sleep over it...
If you lost sleep over it, you probably need help. Once the play is over and the whistle blows, there's no need to have a "I'm going to kill you" rage. However, when the next whistle blows to start the next play that is when you go back into beast mode.

We definitely didn't lose because we helped people up. We lost because we played softer. I don't know if that can be argued. But us playing soft has nothing to do with us helping guys up.

The Ravens aren't like that anymore. By the way,,I get your point in the OP. Never saw anything about playing disrespectful in it.

The Ravens most certainly are still us-against-them. The entire football world is us-against-them; the only thing that changes is the 'them' and the 'us.' But I still don't understand why the OP thinks that means we should behave like toddlers who can't get their way. Football is a man's game, no one can argue that. And a real man is a gentleman in defeat AND in victory.

Whatever. This topic is sort of going in circles now; you aren't going to change your opinion and the people who disagree with you aren't going to be convinced.

why is it people seem to correlate Mercy/Sportsmanship with Weakness , You help your opponent off the Turf Cause its the Right thing to do , you take a knee up by 20 with 25 secs left cause its the Right thing to do , you take a knee on a last ditched pass attempt you intercepted with 30 secs left when your up because its the RIGHT THING TO DO, some people remind me of those Cobra Kai guys in Karate Kid , Mercy Takes a Bigger Man, As Does Respecting your Opponent and Rivals.

When I played (Tailback/OLB) I got hit and never looked to get helped up and when i delivered hits I got up and walked away... To each his own, but I was in my zone when on the field... I didnt turn it off and on like a light switch. Lol

You see we kept the intensity up in game 1 and look at how that turned out. God Bless, Good night!

It's a GAME, guy. You help the other guy up because you're both just doing your jobs. You as a fan can hate another team all you want, but these guys are all part of the same union, same species, same league, it's a GAME. I love seeing our guys show some class out there, win or lose. That's Ravens football - you can play tough as you like, but when the whistle blows, the play's over.
Your missing the point, the opposing team will use more energy getting up by himself and its not helping our defense out lifting the guy up either.

And there was also a lot of sportsmanship displayed before, during and after the Steelers game! No correlation.

Now our guys are not fit or in shape enough to play the game b/c they used their energy helping their opponents up?

I think I've heard it all!

I agree with the OP.

There is a mentality on the football field...and that's hit and hit hard...this isn't your grandfathers football league anymore...guys aren't tackling anymore there using there bodies as human cannons to HIT the opposing player.

Don't give me that there human and respect blah blah blah..that's why teams meet and shake hands AFTER events to say "thanks, good job, great game, dude u were awesome u took my best shot"

Helping players off the ground was always for times when some sort of foul or accidental occurance happened..the helping up was almost to say "my bad" ... A facemask..sure go for it...but if he just scorched you and picked up 15 yds..my point is why? The guy obviously didn't need ur help to make u look silly just now...but now he needs ur help to get up?

Look at D'Angelo Halls comments this week ...he's not the Cowboys friend this week ...he just said he's coming for your QBs injured body parts...that is footballs mentality ..he's not in the news saying hey I love my fellow human and I'm not even gonna touch him.

Bottomline I don't mind anyone helping a player up..but from personal experience and watching others...ur just suppose to see it less when ur teams butt is getting kicked....why...bc when ur getting ur butt kicked ur suppose to care so much that ur so angry the last thing running through your mind is helping a guy that just embarrassed u.

I too noticed it during Sunday..but hey I was just an upset fan sitting at the bar...everything pissed me off about that game

Regarding helping people up, I never see any players help refs/sideline cameramen up when they get steamrolled by a guy in pads going full speed. That always irked me.

Playing high school ball back on the talent-rich Eastern Shore (yes, that is sarcasm at its finest), we helped the other guy up. Cuz, you know, his father was the only plumber for many zip codes around and ticking people off over one play was probably not in your long-term interest.

The truth is, for all sorts of various reasons (personal and professional), methinks it's a bit similar in the big leagues. These guys stood arm-in-arm not a few months ago, desperately trying to make their labor case understood to the world and to the owners. I would suspect a bit more respect is shown to each other this season than in previous years. Hate it, love it, but it's probably the way it is.

Personally, I like it. Poor sportsmanship just seems awfully un-American.
