Ravens Defense Helping Opposing Players Up?

You have to take into consideration, there's usually a lot of respect for other players on the opposing teams. They may have been on the same team before (college or pro). Take for example the facemask penalty called on Ed Reed against Britt. As soon as the play was over Ed jumped up and let Britt know it wasn't intentional. There's a lot of mutual respect amongst the league. We tell our kids to be respectful and display good sportsmanship during little league but don't expect the same respect from the kids' idols? doesn't make sense.

Now IMO I consider Howe Long a class act always has been, and I agree on the field it is his job to pound you into submission, it is yours and teammates jobs, to pick your butt up and do it again.
No, between the whistles it's your job to pound him into submission.

I wonder if Magic and Larry helped each other much on the basketball court?
I know off the court they became friends but on the court ,let the blood fly.

Do you think Magic was scorching Larry or viceversa, they would be helping
each other off the floor.I highly doubt it.

They do it because it's classy and they aren't immature. I don't see much of a link between helping someone up because it's a good thing to do and doing it because you've been beaten into submission.

Bottom line is we played soft and the bending over backwards to help Britt & Co off the ground is a reflection of that.

That's the point im trying to make.
Playing soft (which we did) and showing sportsmanship are not the same. Maybe you should rent some gladiator movies instead of watching football.

How does that have anything to do with this? Different sport, different guys, different teams.
It has alot to do with it. Dont play all soft and cuddly when someone is smoking you.

Bottom line is we played alot softer then the Steelers game

Yeah but that has nothing to do with the sportsmanship they showed.

I did...on more than one occasion. It shows sportsmanship and civility. The fan mentality is not that of a players...
The nice thing is that they helped a lot of Steelers go down on the ground.

I dunno man. I'm with the OP. It's cool that their friends off the field, but honestly, when you step on that field, IT'S WAR. They aren't your friends on the field. Football is war, and if you treat it differently, you just might lose.

My high school team never helps people up. We hit em, and we get up. It's a mentality. "I'm better than you. You are the enemy"

It's not classless. It's not disrespectful. It's football. Shake hands after the game, but during, it's war. Nothing else.

That is what I'm trying to say. I saw too much love being given to the Titans players during the game. Many people
I watched the game with also commented on it too.Are you really gonna help your opponent off the ground when
they are shellacking you? Bottom line is we were soft and it showed. If we are this soft against the Rams,we will
lose that game as well.

Its an unnecessary show of kindness. Football is very mental, psycological, and I just prefer to always be the same way... Play consistantly MEAN and NASTY. Every game should AT LEAST match the intensity of the Steelers game. Why play any other way? They dont respect us, its us against the world, it's REAL on the battle field!

We was soft Sunday, and it showed. I bet they feel their team is more physical and intimidating/tougher than our's.
I was shocked and embarrassed.

I never want to see that again

and the place it mattered we had the upper hand....the scoreboard. I doubt if we would have just left them there with no show of sportsmanship the score would have been the same.

Intensity that puts up points for us, or keeps them off for the other team is really the only intensity that matter.

And remember the steeler's trying to get in our head by the constant running of the mouth? It did not turn out well for them. Whiloe we kept our mouth shut and saved it for the field and let our intensity during play speak for us.

It's called respect. I'd rather see us do that then start getting pissed off and take unsportsmanlike penalties or something by shoving their face into the dirt.

Please. The Ravens may have played soft and under-performed but it had nothing to do with helping Kenny Britt up a few times. That's respect and sportsmanship. Bring that argument to Ed Reed or Ray Lewis and you'd be laughed out of the room.

Boxers and UFC fighters routinely tap gloves before, during, and after rounds and they're most definitely not soft.

Im a good sport, and I encourage sportsmanship, (no dirty tactics) but that dont mean start a happy hour out there when we getting our @@@ handed to us!

It takes a certain mentality to play this game ... I want them to make the other team PAY! Hit them so hard they dont want to get hit again! If we weren't playing soft it wouldn't have looked so bad i guess, but they were down right more physical than us and was talking smack between plays. It just wasn't the time to be friendly in MY opinion. I lost sleep over it...

And it may be a long shot but I hope we see them in the playoffs, when EVERYBODY takes this game seriously, they will not be the most physical on that day, and the sweet taste of retribution may help you sleep.

I noticed during the Titans game that after some catches our defensive
players were helping their receivers up off the ground.

Ive been watching Ravens games since their inception and cant say
Ive seen this .

DId we really go that SOFT during the Titans game?Tell me it ain't so!
It's called Sportsmanship. And I've seen them do it before, maybe you just haven't been paying as much attention like you were this week.

I mean we don't do it with the Steelers players but C'mon, who would wanna touch them?

It doesn't make the team soft by any stretch, I just don't see how it's disrespectful, or unsportsmanlike to not help someone up.

It's football. It's mean. It's nasty. It's a game for aggressive people. Aggressive people do not help each up the other team. Did L.T. ever help somebody up?

Now, if you hit someone head to head, or do something illegal, apologize. Stay classy, but stay tough.

Shake hands after the game, and it's all good.

Yes, and he was the first to stand next to theismann and yell that he was hurt, he was actually telling people to get off of him. and was very apologetic and went to see him after the game to check up on him.

Well yeah. What I'm sayin is unless the guy is in fact seriously hurt, don't help him up. That was a classy move by L.T.

No one said it's disrespectful not to help someone up. Just that it's a sign of respect to help someone up. There's a difference.

It's all about mentality to me. "It's us against them" If you play/ed football, you might get it better. It's rough, it's violent. I've never helped someone on the other side up, but I've made personal comments after the game towards players.

I have played football in college, and for the all-army team, we always showed sportsmanship to each other (helping them up, recognizing good plays etc.) And for those 3 hours it is us against them but just because you are on opposing sides, it is not like lives are on teh line where it is kill or be killed. As much as I love the game that is exactly what it is a game.

And yes it is rough and it is violent, and you have to have a mean streak in you but those should be restricted to the confines of the play, if not you look and sound like a James Harrison (whom actually displayed sportsmanship) As much as the media hypes things up very few on field relationships are personal, there are some but it more because of what type of person that is and the moral values of both parties involved not what jersey they where.

You can bet when these athletes go home they teach their children sportsmanship and a level of class to be displayed out of respect for the game.
