Was Asante Samuel Expensive?

69 posts in this topic

Just curious if we could have pursued him since the Eagles got fat and they said he was the odd man out. Personally, I'd love to have him but the Eagles definitely played it right. Just wanted to know if we could have gotten him (assuming there was cap space at some point to do so).

I don't remember any talk about us having a shot at a trade. But I wouldn't expect him to come cheap, and Ozzie isn't into giving away high draft picks. It took us a year to get Boldin because we weren't willing to give up high enough picks for him. I would have liked to see us take a harder run at Nnamdi but even with that I don't think we could have gotten him.

Jimmy will come back strong, stay believin
Jimmy is a rookie CB who could be a bust, solid, or a probowl player
Asante is a 4 times pro bowler, 3 time all pro, 2 time superbowl winning corner who has 42 int is 8 years = Avg of 5+ year

Its not even a comparison.

True, Asante right now is better then J Smith. The Ravens Dumped Willis, Gregg, Heap, Mason and a few others to try and get younger and have the cap room for Ngata, Ray Rice, Flacco and a few others that are gonna need contracts soon this IMO is the reason they really didn't go after any big names. Would've been nice though.

Josh Wilson was reasonable but here we go again with the secondary getting torched. Get JJ and zibby off the field they are backup guys at best.

First, there was no actual trade conversations involving Samuel with any team... I remember reading Schefter on my ESPN insider... Samuels cap numbers are something like 9.5M this yr 10.5 next yr, and 10.75 r 11M in the last yr of deal......
Samuel is more of zone gambling corner back, yes he makes huge ints but he also gives up his share of deep balls because he guesses in coverage so often...
Not mention we would have to Trade something to get him either combo of draft picks or draft pick with players..
Johnathan Joesph would have been better option, but none of that matters now...

It's one game against an experienced QB with big tall WRs and some of the players needed a reality check after the Steeler game...

I think a great trade for both teams would be something like Ellerbe/McClain and Mattison/Reid for Asante. I mean maybe a few more draft picks to even it out a little more, but something like that would be a good deal that could benefit both teams. I would prefer to take DRC off their hands but I'm not sure if he's available and Nnamdi definitely isn't.

So does this mean we will lose against all experienced QB's and big tall WR's. We had our chance to go out and get Veteren CB's.

Let's hope not. For all of the ego massaging going on, Tennesse is a crap team that we did not show up for. They are not as good as we made them look and 9/10 times we win decisively. If we keep this up though this could be one of the most talented teams to not make the playoffs.

However I think this may have served as a wake up call and we have restored or focus.

This isn't ego massaging.

But I don't see how Tennessee is a crap team. They get no respect. Is it because they lost to the Jags week 1? Where they had a new QB, new HC, new offensive system, their best two playmakers had taken practically zero snaps in the preseason.

Titans have an offensive line. They have a run game, they have a secondary, their pass rush is improved. They have Britt and some complimentary pieces (N Washington & Cook). I can't see how they are a crap team.

I did think all of those weaknesses from week 1 would still be apparent for our game. But they started to hit.

That's never a good sign, but didn't they also win like 3 games last year? I don't think they've been to the playoffs since 2008 and haven't won a playoff game since before then. Yes, yes it's a new year, but it's not like we have much to go off of, so I can't really blame people who overlooked them (unless they are players/coaches).

We went there with our heads to big. Harbs and company need to figure out what they’re doing with Gurode and do whatever it takes to make Oher stop false starting. Start Pollard and Gorrer, reshuffle the CB's until Smith and Carr are back. I would put Foxworth on the practice squad until he rehabs the knee. That would make room for someone else to come up. And why not have Harbs talk to Andy Reid about a trade for Samuels! They are friends aren't they.

Well last year they had no answer for QB. Hasselback is a good QB when healthy. Healthy being the most important, because he struggles with it.

I'm guilty of overlooking them too. I didn't think we'd handle them. But I thought we'd win in a close game on the road. This team looks like they can put points on the board this year unlike last year.

Why did you have to do that rock now I have to open up a new can of worms lol?

Here goes.

Chris johnson, is he good yes, is he great no. I have always thought he has been overrated and not even a top 5 back. The reason I say this is because when you look at his game he will have 23 carries for 130 140 yards but when you look at it 1 is usually 50 plus so lets say he has 2 carries in that game one for 40 the other for 50. So that means he has 21 carries for 40 or 50 yards. That is not impressive in the least. That also means that when you need 3 on 3rd down you are probably going to sit on the bench. So I am not at all in love with their running game, I knew he would not get over 60 on us (although he came close, which is more than I expected.)

their O line is not that great we just did not play well and they were in sync, the fact that Hasselbeck runs a west coast offense and has a quick release makes them look better than they are.

Their Secondary is definitely above average, but when healthy I take ours, Philly's, Chiefs, GB's, Dolphin's, Jet's all have better secondary's. Cook is decent but N.Washington is not impressive. Britt I never thought was good but has put it together so he may actually turn out to be a good player as long as off the field issues does not cloud his on field succeess.

I just dont see how they are anything more than barely average on a good day.

Now you are just hurting my feelings. I tend to believe they have a very above average line which is anchored by Micheal Roos. They are definitely much better in run blocking (though it wasn't apparent in this game). But you made a good point about Hasselback and his quick release. Which helps makes them a better team. Hasselback is going to alleviate the lines weakness, though the lines weakness might mean the end for Hasselback.

CJ will come around. I don't think he's overrated. I don't like him. But I think he is explosive in the open field. And for a guy his size that can run between the tackles effectively is something that deserves praise. He's quick through the holes and will also make guys miss.

I was on the Texans board this morning. And they were all talking about how the Titans frighten them. They always seem to sneak on you with good underrated teams and they weren't fooled by the national media's perception.

But we shall see.

I kinda thought that myself haha, when he gets older, he can be a pretty good FS to extend his career. Gotta start tackling better though. But since his strengths are in zone coverages and we play lots of man, he wouldn't be as effective here.

Are there any free agent CB's that didn't get pick up? We really need to try to trade for someone. Asante is the perfect canidate for a trade. The Eagles could afford to trade him. But what would it cost? Who could we afford to lose? maybe add a draft pick to increase the deal.

Frank Walker is on an active roster. That's all you need to know about the talent out there.

Lol. I wouldn't say that. But our defense has always had it's issues with QBs that pick us apart with short routes until the deep routes become available.
They hit so Many comeback routes, and underneath passes until the defense began to sit on it they went deep.
( the comparison is hard to make sense Britt is such a physical. WR. He was boxing our corners out getting jump balls, ( like a young TO ) )

It was prior to that and its because we need CBs with the injuries and poor play.
