Cornerback Situation Against Tennessee

97 posts in this topic

I'm worried with Cary Williams coming up on his hamstring and Jimmy Smith being out for a few weeks that Kenny Britt can outphysical Chris Carr, Lardarius Webb and Dominique Foxworth. If Cary Williams isn't back for this game, it might not be the shutout we're all hoping for.

Cary Williams eventually came back into the Steelers game after his injury. I can only assume, based on that, that the injury was minor and shouldn't be something that will keep him out of the game on Sunday. Even if he was out of the game, Britt isn't that great of a receiver, he's just a good receiver. I think the damage he could do against our defense is minimal even without Cary or Jimmy. The Titans aren't a team in a position to threaten us, and they just lost to Jacksonville, who started the terrible Luke McCown at quarterback.

I think you overestimate their chances.

Against a wiley veteran like Matt Hasselbeck and an All-World RB like Chris Johnson, I don't believe we'll see the same decimation that we saw in Week 1.

But, that doesn't mean we won't see a Ravens victory.

I won't blow the cornerback situation out of proportion, as I believe the Ravens to have more depth than the casual observer would believe. With all due respect to Kenny Britt, he won't be able to make those spectacular catches that he's made in years past if the QB doesn't have time to deliver the release the ball in a perfect spiral between the numbers.

Another thing which makes Britt look deceptively good is that he had a fluke of an 80 yard TD. Take away that play and his stats: 4 catches, 56 yards, 1TD. Nowhere near as impressive. I think we should double him most of the time no matter who is on him but if Cary is playing then we should put him on Britt because of his size.

Im not worried about Britt. I think we'll shut him down. I am a little worried about CJ though. No one on our team could catch him if he finds a hole

The depth at corner is concerning... but NOT for this game. I really don't see the Titans scoring any touchdowns on the Ravens defense. I mean, Britt is not faster than any of Pittsburgh's receivers(except Hines Ward perhaps). And we kept them in check... most of Wallace's yards came after Ravens were up big and just trying to prevent him from getting deep.

The key to this game will be PENALTIES. Don't fall for Titans typical baiting. Especially Cortlant Finnigan. However... once the offense has torched Titans defense for a few scores and the lead is comfortable... I wouldn't mind Boldin laying Finnigan out cold. On a clean block of course!

Suggs, Cody, Ngata... holes just don't exsist with that front! hahaha

Rely upon the pass rush. Eliminate the worry. Titans O-Line is so-so. Bring the heat early and often. Get inside the head of Hasselback. He is so use to the powder puff division with the Seahawks. Let's give him a formal welcome to the AFC.

Carr hurt his hamstring, not Williams. Cary is good to go. Williams and Webb will start with Foxy or Haruki in the slot. We'll be fine so long as our d-line continues to dominate.

Cary finished the game against the Steelers and I doubt Harbaugh is letting him air it out in practice these first few days. Williams perfect matchup is with a receiver like Britt. He can press him at the line without worrying about getting blown past, both are physical Cary has more length to him. I think Jimmy would have given Britt fits, but Cary will do alright covering him. One thing with Pagano is he's going to disguise coverages alot better than Mattison was so that alone will help us. Plus I dont believe Tennessee runs a true west coast offense that Hasselbeck excelled in.

We should be alright in this game as long as Johnson is contained.

Everyone is forgetting that 80 of Kenny Britt's yards game off of ONE PLAY. Sure, he still did the work but it was poor tackling and execution from the Jags. I think we can contain him and Nate Washington.

Weren't the Jags also one of (if not the) worst pass defenses in the league last season?

Britt has the frame and the skillset to be great but he hasn't put it together to be in the same class as a Roddy White, Andre Johnson, Megatron, etc. Not even close.

Yup, they were BAD last year. he's a big body that has a lot of potential. In years past, I would be more worried about stopping him. Cary is a Big Corner with nice speed. I think he can match up well with him. I'd feel better if Jimmy was on the field but Webb is making me believe in him again. The kid is hitting like a hammer, too!

Hey let's not forget how good Webb can be. I wouldn't judge him too harshly for a few difficult times last year when he was still recovering.

I think harbaugh could cover Washington, so I am not worried all we would have to do is roll coverage. And I know how big of a fan people are of Zibby and I like him to but the one negative I could take away from Pittsburgh is that Zibby is nowhere near as good in coverage as some people in here seem to think, so why dont we put the hammer out there and let him do what he does best

I'm glad you brought him up. I've got all the confidence in the world in Webb right now playing the nickel, and playing it extremely well. His speed and ability to blitz AND tackle kinda reminds me of Charles Woodson. I'd be comfortable if Coach Pagano used nickel packages all day to cover CJ.

Safety help. Hasselback isn't anything special anymore, and their other receivers are just average. Not like he'll have time to throw anyways with Suggs and Ngata in his face all day.

Side note here, but how big is this game for Cary, to go to his former team to rub their nose in it for starting that [profanity deleted] named Cortland Finnegan. If they would have just waited a little longer they may have had something special now he is going to get retribution.

I want Pollard to start this week... he just brings something to the table that Zibby doesn't. He can intimidate people, and they will know he's back there ready to wallop anyone who crosses the middle of the field.

We will be fine at CB. I think Cary just came out because he got banged up on a hard tackle, like others have pointed out he was back in the game the next drive.

Even if Carr and Smith are both unavailable, I'm ok with Foxworth as the 3rd CB. He didnt look great against Pitt, but he also didnt give up any big plays. I'm pretty confident in the ability of Ruki to play the slot as well and Chykie should be active this game as extra depth.

The key will be pressuring the QB again. Titans dont have a great O-line and I think we can get after them with Pagano's agressive playcalling. Hasselbeck is far from mobile and he will make mistakes when pressured.

My only concern is shutting down CJ, but I'm not sure if he is really up to the task of taking over a game yet. TBH we will probably dominate the Titans on Sunday both on Offense and Defense. Should be fun to watch.

I sure hope so. But its one of the best defenses vs one of the best RBs. And I cant think of one person on our team who could catch Johnson if hes in front of us

He was limited on carries due to him holdin out. Coach already said he'll get more because they cannot win w/ him only getting 9 attempts

Agreed, he just came back too, he might be adjusted abit more playing. But he is going against the RAVENS Def. If the Jags. can hold him, then we most certainly can too. I think he will get more yardage than the last game but it will not be anything crazy in yardage.
(I hope)

I just remembered we have C. Brown, well im guessing he will get more reps in practice a little more than usual because he will more than likely be playing. I think C.Brown can handle it.

Plus all we have to do is score more points, hopefully that will not be a problem. I just hope Cam doesnt go back to his old ways and as soon as we get a lead , all we do is try and run the clock out. I dont expect 7 turnovers either so we can depend on that, I hope we do get atleast 3 turnovers.

Also, im loving how Webb is being so much more phy. , never knew he could be a hard hitter. It amazed me against Pitt.

I think cameron finally has the players that fit his offensive style, and it doesnt look like hes letting up this year. Chykie brown was a very good cornerback at texas who can not only cover but can also blitz much like webb. I could see us playing a lot of ellerbe or kruger who are faster and athletic and good in coverage to at least slow CJ down coming out of the backfield. I dont want to appear too over the top but pretty much every aspect of this game is in the ravens favor. As for Brit, im pretty sure i heard cary cramped up and like mentioned he was in the game the next play.

Does anyone feel we still need to bring in help at the CB position?
[/quote]

Anyone walking the streets at this time probably isn't much of an upgrade over what the team already has.

I guess you can never have enough or so ozzie says, so who knows. I have seen that position decimated by injuries before so I am not going to say anything just yet.
