Cam Newton

As bad as Arizona's defense is, setting the NFL rookie record for passing yards in his debut is extremely impressive. Even more so when you consider how raw he is.

While he more than likely broke the rules at Auburn and can come off as insincere at times, I don't despise the guy as others seemingly do. It'll probably be the highlight of his season, but I'm rooting for the guy.

And it wasn't just numbers. He looked really good. Had wonderful touch on some throws. My one criticism would probably be that he is nothing like the scrambler he's cracked up to be.

Stats Smats, Did Carolina Win? No, Arizona is the team that is 1-0 and Carolina is 0-1. Plus they said he broke Peyton Manning's record for a rookie, the Colts were 3-13 in Manning's rookie year so this means nothing.

Well if he turns out to be Peyton Manning I don't think anyone in Carolina will be too upset.

Remember when Steve Smith wanted out of Carolina??? I bet Cam is happy he changed his mind!! Cam's looking great, and will only get better.

He's rarely going to be able to pull off the runs he in college in the NFL. However, I think he's already the second-best scrambling QB behind Vick.

Really? So because his team didn't win and the QB who's mark he eclipsed played for a losing team, recording one of the best statistical games by a rookie means nothing? That's a joke.

More "meaningless" trivia from the Elias Sports Bureau:
Newton is the 1st player in NFL history to throw for 400 yards in his debut in NFL history. The previous record for most pass yards in a player's NFL debut was 346 by the Browns' Otto Graham in 1950. He's also just the 2nd rookie in NFL history to throw for 300+ yards in his team's season opener. The other to do it was Peyton Manning, who also lost his game.

Newton's 77-yard Pass TD is the longest by a No. 1 overall draft pick since the merger in 1970. The previous mark was 67 yards set by Terry Bradshaw in 1970. Only 4 of the 19 quarterbacks since the merger selected No. 1 overall threw a 50+ yard TD for their first career TD. Besides Bradshaw and Newton, the only others to do it are Troy Aikman and Drew Bledsoe.

Didn't Ryan Leaf do well in his first game?

The Cards traded their best cornerback. Their secondary stinks. Good for Cam, but it goes down from here.

An impressive feat, no doubt. I struggled to believe it 'til now but he did look like he could be the Panthers long term answer at QB. Not that I'm expecting performances like that every week but at least he showed he has the ability to be a very good player.

I think that this one game doesn't exactly write the book on Cam Newton's professional career, but the tape from this game and the next few weeks will be very telling of how he'll pan out. Mechanics will show if this game is a fluke. However, mechanics aside, consistent production will show whether he has the potential to continue improving as defenses adjust to him.

I've got NFL.com Game Rewind so I'll be curious to see if the throws he's making are really as good as hyped.

Look he did good, I'll give him credit as he went out and had a great game, but it doesn't matter how many yards Cam throws for if the other team out scores the Panthers and the Panther end up with a loss. Chargers from last year was a perfect example, they had a great offense and Rivers had a great year but proved that all of that is just stats and didn't translate to wins.

Plus it's 1 game, let's see if he can keep it up for 15 more and at the same time help score enough to out score the other opponent.

My only gripe is that besides Steve Smith and the tight ends, the only other player he got involved with is Brandon Lafell. It's fine though because Carolina has a bad receiving core outside of Steve. Another thing is that he still plays like he's in college at times when it comes to faking the ball. He has to not only speed up, but sell the fake alot better for some success.

Cam surprised today, it could be he is good, it could be the team he faced was sleeping on him and/or just arent very good..I think Cam's preseason was an extreme, less than 50% completion rate, not much offense...but he's still a long way from being a quality QB, he had a nice week 1..I think its going to be not a fluke but I think generally he will struggle this year BUT he has a good run game to help him

The focus for me is on the record he broke. Statistics obviously don't always tell the complete story or necessarily translate to wins, but a rookie that was wildly-perceived as raw(not that this performance disproves that) topping the mark Newton is very impressive in itself.

Even with those rather impressive numbers, I'm still not a Cam Newton believer. At best he'll be a Rex Grossman type, the guy who'll give you an amazing game here or there, but his low points will be exceptionally low. Maybe he'll prove me wrong, but I doubt it. Then again, I don't particularly like any of these gimmicky running quarterbacks.

I'm not impressed by the numbers, nor do I believe Cam Newton will be a successful NFL QB. Ignoring his indomitable arrogance, embodied by his #1 jersey, I still think the underlying concerns that he's a run first guy, who I don't believe is smart enough to handle a real NFL offense, are there. If you watch the tape from that game, I probably could have thrown the ball like that. The Cardinals were horrendous in coverage, and the fact that the Panthers couldn't beat them after such a terrible outing is a testament to how bad that team is.

This could be Cam's bright spot, but my money is on it being all downhill from here. He's not the kind of guy I would want as the face of my franchise.

C'mon now. I'm no Cam supporter, but give him his due.

He may be arrogant but, let's be honest here, how many 22 year-old kids wouldn't be arrogant having in 1 year gone from Junior College to National Championship, Heisman trophy winning 1st Overall NFL draft pick? I guarantee you that if any of us did that, we'd carry his swagger and arrogance.

I didn't think he would get be a great QB. But you must admit he has that 'it' people look for in young QBs.

I do think Cam benefited from the Cardinals and their gameplan. Arizona probably decided to focus in on stopping the run, which they did very effectively. But there was a ton single coverage on double S. Plus the Cardinals aren't the best pass D in the first place.

I love how Newton, the number one overall draft pick, still doesn't have a picture on NFL.com.

Yeah, that's pretty humorous.

All I have to say about this week for him is 1 TD, 3 INTs. You can't win a football game if you throw for 500 yards if you're throwing INTs like Jake Delhomme. Then again, that's something Carolina fans are used to...

I was down on Cam . But I am starting to come around. Back to back 400+ yard games, 1 against the Pack is impressive. Sure he has some turnovers. But the kid has confidence and isn't afraid to take shots. I might not like the guy a whole lot, but he's looking to be something special.

And he still hasn't got a win.

I still think this is more important than Cam throwing for over 400 yards two weeks in a row but I'll eat my crow and give credit where credit is due, Cam Newton is showing he is the real deal. If only the Panthers could surround him with better talent offensively and on the defense the Panthers can become a dangerous team in a couple years. I'm a Cam Newton Believer.

Yeah I definitely appreciate that for him to throw for 400+ plus yards in his first two NFL starts is very impressive and I think he is showing that he's the real deal but he does need wins. I don't think he can be criticized too much for not getting a win this week as it is the defending Super Bowl champs that he played but they do need to start winning.
