Uh... the Woodley deal is a big time contract that got done before next offseason. Oh yea, so is the Timmons deal....Oh and now the Polamalu deal too. Why would anyone expect that from the Ravens...{sarcasm}
uh, what the hell does PIT have to do with the way the Ravens handle finances?

It doesn't have anything the hell to do with it. But the quote i responded to made it seem as though the Ravens can't or we shouldn't expect them to be able to get a "big time contract" done until next year. I only referenced the stealers because they just got three big time contacts done in a month and a half. I think the Ravens FO could definitly get this deal done before Sept. 20th. I think that is the cut off for paying the franchise tender for this entire season.

werent the steelers doing everything possible to get under the cap? I would figure that would be the reason for getting all those contracts done so quickly..
yup i believe thats the truth...I see no reason tho why the Ravens wouldnt want to do the same. Its not like we have millions to spare under the cap.

To the dismay of many Ravens fans out there, it looks like we won't be able to sign the next best thing that's on the market in the offseason. I want all of our FA's signed, especially Ray Rice.

Well, that's great and all, but this shouldn't exactly be a surprise. I've said all off season that I dont think there's a snowball's chance in hell that Ngata's contract gets done before this season begins. Won't get done until this coming offseason, take it to the bank. I mean, we're talking about the same team that tagged Suggs two years in a row before getting his deal done.

Well obviously...They rarely ever work on contracts extensions during the season.

The Steelers got Troy's contract done, so there's no reason to believe that there wasn't enough time to come an agreement for a contract extension with a great player.

The two guys we absolutely have to keep are Ngata and Flacco. Ngata is one of the top 5 best defensive players in the league, and you don't let a franchise QB like Flacco walk. Running back isn't an important position in today's league, and if Rice wants Chris Johnson money we have to let him walk. Honestly, if I had to choose between the remaining two I would sign Grubbs over Ray Rice. As much as I like Rice, I bet we could get a guy that could put up similar stats for a lot cheaper. Offensive Line is far more critical than having a talented running back because no matter how talented that back is he can't do anything if the line can't open the holes, as we saw last season.
No. Just no. Have you seen Ray Rice compared to, someone like Ryan Mathews? Without Rice we'd have a completely average offense.

Ya I think Rice is really under rated or at least he doesn't get the attention nationally or locally that he deserves for being as good as he is. It's probably because he had a low avg. yards per attempt but our O-line was kind of a patch up job and I'm convinced that Le'ron was sabotaging his blocks for Rice so that the coach would give him a shot instead. I'm very glad that Le'ron was shipped off to KC. (Notice how much their offense and run game has really struggled in the preseason) compared to last year? It is only the preseason, but I think Le'ron has something to do with it.

YES!!!!!!!

No I'm kidding, but I think Le'ron was just a terrible blocker and we really didn't give him enough flack for how bad he was.

Yes, I realize that. But it was obvious to me the minute they tagged Ngata that they were going to drag their feet with his contract. We tagged Suggs two years in a row, let Ray actually hit the free agent market. Why is anyone surprised that Ngata's deal isn't done yet?

How much/how long was Troy's contract? How does it compare to what Ngata will likely get? How many other pending huge FA do the Steelers have to address in the near future?

Really not as simple as you guys try to make it sound.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it reported that ngatas contract wasn't happening until after this season anyway? If that's the case, why all the speculation on why it's not done or when it will get done?

Last I heard, they started on it a couple weeks ago. I guess that's why everyone has their panties in a knot over it.

Wouldn't him getting tagged pretty much be the writing on the wall that the contract gets done after the season?

The term was less so the money will likely be less. Yes it is tougher the longer and more money that the contract is for, but they've exchanged figures and Ngata is a fairly consistent player with a good attitude so there aren't really any risks to consider.

And I'm not sure what you're point is with how many contracts we have to do in the near future. The steelers don't have many because they were able to make agreements with 5 top tier guys this offseason, yet we haven't been able to do one.

Ngata will be resigned, no worries there. Flacco will be resigned. I can't guarantee Rice or Grubbs. Rice is a rare, one-of-a-kind back, but that doesn't mean crap if he doesn't have an offensive line to run behind. I'd rather have a 5 great OL than 1 great RB. Of course, I want all four resigned.

then the question is why are we struggling to sign our great players to long term deals when other teams have no issue at all.
Simple. Ozzie doesn't rush his deals. He does things at a steady pace to assure he doesn't screw ut up. We're not struggling, Ozzie's taking his time to get the best deal for both parties. Ozzie just doesn't rush to get things done.

I think rice is really under rated too. I like rice a lot and think he is one of the few complete backs in this league and he hasn't even scraped his prime yet. We've seen him do some pretty amazing stuff the last two years. The front office likes him a lot and I am sure they will give him the deal he deserves.

The ngata deal is probably not going to get done until next season. I'm pretty sure his agent is trying to get more than the haynesworth deal but i think it'll end up being 6 years 80 mill.

I think flacco's deal will get done after this year and I remember reading an article earlier in the summer with him saying that he wants to stay in baltimore and get a deal done asap.

grubbs has been the most consistent olineman we have had since ogden. I feel like he might be the one we tag next year but i'm pretty sure we won't just let him walk.

I think JJ won't get resigned bc of the depth we have at that position and depending on how williams and jimmy play this year we will either cut foxworth or restructure his contract. I like foxworth and i think he likes baltimore so I am hoping he restructures his contract.

I'm hoping we draft an ilb and saftey, that would be the most ideal situation. We have to prepare for the loss of reed and lewis. I think ray lewis will maybe play one more year at the most esp since he said himself that he doesn't see him self playing past 37. Ed reed's contract is up after 2012. It is a possibility that he could hang it up after that. If he doesn't that's amazing but we have to prepare for that too.

Not in Ozzie's nature to not do the absolute best he can.
He reminds me of those extreme couponers ... they could get $1000 worth of merchandise for free, and be pissed that they didn't get the merchandise and cash back as well.
