According to Jay Glazer, the Jaguars have informed David Garrard of his release. This is very similar to when the Jags released Bryon Leftwhich close to the Season in favor of Garrard, except this time Luke McCown is the beneficiary, not Blaine Gabbert as McCown will be the new starting QB for the Jaguars.
I'm reporting the Jaguars today have informed starting QB David Garrard they are releasing him! Luke McCown will start opener! Shocker!!!
Discuss!

Will Jags have a better season with McCown starting over Garrard, and should they have started Gabbert instead?

Wow. That's a bit of a shocker. Gabbert didn't look too great in PS.

Well if we want a vet guy, there he is.

I'll bet the owner just didn't want to pay him. If a vet is on the roster after for week 1 his entire contract is guaranteed.
Probably but it seems the Jaguars are doing the exact thing the Carolina Panthers did in the last couple years of John Fox, dumping all their veterans for younger talent and paying cheaply instead of keeping veterans. This is a bad move, for a team who came so close to winning the AFC South last year, I really question this move, especially with the way the Colts are without Manning. I think we'll see Blaine Gabbert when we play them on Monday Night in October.

Too Soon to now put the Jaguars in the Andrew Luck Sweepstakes?

Pretty much so. The Jags probably don't have high expectations of their team this year. So why have an aging who is schedule to make 8M hang around in a team that wants to rebuild?

Never too soon. This move by the Jag definitely makes them one of the front runners now.

Yeah that's true, and like I said, I'm calling it, Gabbert will be starting for the Jags when we play them in October. I wonder if the Jags made the move too late for this to be accounted for in the Madden Roster Update for Thursday.

Any chance we bring him in as our veteran backup? He's beaten the Steelers when it's mattered... that's a plus in my book lol.

Why spend a top pick on a QB if you expected to be in the Luck sweepstakes? Doesn't make sense.

Several different NFL writers - including Prisco and John Clayton - mentioned the Ravens as one of 4 teams they project to call him. The other ones were Indy (naturallly), the Bengals and Miami.

Interesting.

$8 million they saved, great - but starting McCown? Over Gabbert? McCown has never had any NFL success, so I'd either let the kid learn or have kept Garrard... he wasn't terrible.

And the $8 million saved puts them $33 million under the cap. They didn't need to cut Garrard for financial reasons, or to get someone else and fit them under the cap. I see this as a "thrifty" owner (like Cincy's Mike Brown) saving $ in a year when you don't have to spend a minimum cap.

It just makes them a weaker football team. If I was a Jags fan, I'd be unhappy.

Because if you keep shooting at enough of them eventually you'll hit. If you get the #1 pick, your taking luck no matter who your QB is. Bengals, Minnesota, Carolina, Jags even though they have young QBs they drafted, would still draft Luck. He's a special player.

The Jags will give Gabbert a chance to play this season no doubt.

Agreed. But how many decisions that the Jags make do we ever agree with? They are a poorly designed franchise. They do not want to pay 8M for a guy if they plan on going no where this season. Gabbert will get his chance this season to start. They just aren't ready to throw him into the fire just yet. He just isn't ready especially with the shortened offseason.

I give it 3 games though.

The way I handled the team in the Mock Off-season/Draft We had back in March was better than the way the Jags currently run the team. Well if anything, starting Luke McCown will put them in a position to draft a Top DE or decide between Justin Blackmon & Alshon Jeffery being the new # 1 for McCown and eventually Gabbert.

I was shocked by this also, I dont really understand it, I could see it happening NEXT year, but this makes no sense. From a money standpoint, whats the big deal, they areant spending their cap money anyway, and on a talent standpoint, .......McCown?...

Anyway, I can see us making a play for him, we did save alittle cap room but cutting Gooden and Burgess, but... Im pretty confident with Tyrod, and I think bringing in another QB would stunt his growth.

Absolutely. A franchise rumored to be on it's way to L.A., because of no fan support. But who wants to support a team with an inept owner / front office?

Of course, all three Florida teams haven't sold out their opener yet - I don't understand it, Tampa is a good young team, with an exciting young QB, yet they can't fill their stadium. I lived in Orlando for 2 years. The problem in Florida is that everyone's a transplant, so everyone has their "home" franchise they root for, and not the local team.

Of course, the Rams + the Raiders failed in L.A., remarkably enough. The 2nd biggest U.S. city and they can't fill the stadium... so the Jags franchise may be doomed to long term ineptitude.

I agree with you on Gabbert - let him sit for a little while, and ease him in. I've heard he hasn't set the world on fire in TC/PS, though. The person I feel bad for is Del Rio - he was given that ultimatum (like Kubiak) that no playoffs = no job. Now, they do this. I wonder how he feels about it?

It's nice to root for a team with a good owner & FO. It's the most important variable, above the coaches and they players, for long term competitiveness.

I actually thought McCown might be on that short list of available QBs after the cuts. Thought it might not be a bad look. The guy can sling the ball but he gets flustered easily. You just need to keep him max protected. Never thought Garrard would be the guy instead.

Pittsburgh has Dixon + Leftwich/Batch. I wouldn't mind Garrard + Taylor, with TT getting the 2nd team reps in practice, and the coaches decide who's more capable of replacing Flacco, if he's injured.

It may sound heartless, but the primary concern isn't to develop TT into a starting QB. Joe Flacco is too young to ever consider TT as a starter in Baltimore, absent a catastrophic injury to Flacco. They aren't in "competition" unless Flacco drastically plummets in his capability. It's like NE with Ryan Mallett. A backup QB they didn't need, with Brian Hoyer playing well as a backup - but Belicheck will trade Mallett after he develops for a high draft pick - exactly as he did with Cassell.

Like I said, it sound heartless, but the FO is about winning, first - and everything else is secondary.

I don't understand why you don't at least trade the guy. I'm sure he's worth a 1st or 2nd to some team, and if he's that bad you might end up with a high draft pick.

MJD is basically their entire offense now

But why has his fantasy draft stock dropped his pass year?
