Is Stover Burnt Out?

53 posts in this topic

After two games he has failed to make 2 field goals in the 40ish range. Not only that his Kickoffs were a very short almost everytime..

I love Stover as much or more as the next guy, but I think after 17 years of playing football, he may be done.

Final season? Or just a couple fluke kicks?

though that could be possible, i doubt it. he showed the same signs of decay in the beginning of the '05 season, but he bounced back.

No doubt, I was just thinking 17 years is a long time, and the NFL can really age a person.. I am starting to think he is just getting to old to play anymore.

well lets not get off the stover wagon this early. its still early and it hasnt cost us games to this point. The kickoffs were supposed to be like that in an attempt to not kick it to cribbs.

Yes but the Stover we all know, could make those kicks.

hey yall sure we would of liked stover to hit that field goal. The way i see it its good when stovere misses. it put pressureon the offence to score TD. after all he's just a kicker. he's not burnt out!

That's two games in a row. And, yes, you've got to wonder, ask yourself what's going on?
We all share these concerns, but he always seems to bounce back. Let's hope the bouncing back continues.
Only time will tell. C'mon Stove, let's get ready to heat it up again. B)

Matt Stover is the only player left from the original Brown's team and has been kicking for 17 years. Yes his leg is not as strong as it used to be. Can we still depend on him to come through in the clutch? I do not know, but I do know his days are #ed and we need to get a new kicker for kick off and field goals sooner than later. :o

If everyone remembers right, Stover started off slow in 05, He went 0-3 in the indy game, 1st game of the season. He went on to attempt 31 more Fg's in the season and only missed on 1. He will be back to being Money Matt. But It would be nice if we had the spot to add a kick off and long FG guy. I like Stover as much as the next guy, But I'm not sure How much longer He's got in Him. I dont think It would be right if the Ravens would "get rid" of Him, but it might be time for Hime to call it quits after this year. I know He will be back to being one of the most accurate kickers this year, but His range on the FG's and Him not being able to kick it deep is going to limit us.

If those are signs of burnt out, he has been burnt out for years. lol
He has never been a good kickoff or 40+ yard kicker. Well, at least not for many years that I have remembered.
That is why we used to have a back up with a heavy leg but less accuracy. Do we have an injury on our kicking team?

Well, a successful field goal requires a good holder, right? Which back-up quarterback do we have doing that? Not trying to make excuses for stover, but I saw him doing a field goal drill during training camp & he was booming them in 40+ yards out.. I doubt Stover's leg could deteriorate that fast :P

Stover is solid. When he does decide to retire we are gonna have one heck of a job trying to find some able to fill his spot. He has been Mr. autoMattic for so long I think he deserves a little grace. I watched him miss a few in one game, then he was lights out for the rest of the season. I have complete faith in Stover.

Right this all sounds good. Let's see how our Hall of Fame kicker performs this week! He is a first ballot Hall of Fame kicker that I'm sure of, but 17 year, how many more years do you think he will kick?

Kickers in the HOF are EXTREMELY rare. If a kicker from this generation goes in, it will more than likey be Adam Vinateri.

As for Stover, I'll wait and see how he does for the rest of the season before I say he's done, but it hasn't looked good thus far.

Adam Vinatieri?? He has a long way to go....
There is only one true placekicker in the Hall of fame: Jan Stenerud, Let's Compare

Jan Stenerud - Points 1699 - FGM 373 - PAT 580
Matt Stover - Points 1831 - FGM 436 - PAT 523
Adam Vinatieri - Points 1401 - FGM 314 - PAT 459

Jan Stenerud will have company in the Hall of Fame - that Man, Matt Stover. Stover also leads a team in career points, and help win a superbowl. The only thing Adam Vinatieri has done is be on great teams that have reached the superbowl and he made his kicks. Some impressive ones nevertheless.

I know, maybe doing that will preserve Stover so he can kick field goals.

I'm not saying it's right necessarily, just that if a kicker goes it will probably be Vinateri. He's more well known and has kicked last second, game winning field goals in two Super Bowls and has served on the two teams that have been dominant this decade. None of that means he's necessarily a better kicker than Stover, but it means he's far more likely to get HOF votes. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Matt in the HOF but I just don't see it happening.

He is no longer "automatic Matt" once the FG yardage goes over 39 or 40. It's very sad because he is a great Raven and a great man of faith and character, but he is showing his age and it cost us at least overtime today...

First off how can any RAVEN'S fan say that he/she does not like M. Stover? The all time leading scoreer Matt Stover. Now if you are trying to tell me that his leg has weakened and he has kicked past his time I can agree to that but to say you do not like Stove is crazy to me.
