Phillips is NECESSARY for our defense to work properly. He is a forward smashing linebacker that will be used on ST such as punt coverage and kickoff. Then he will be used in run stopping formations such as a 4-4 style alignment that would be used on a short to go situation.

I think he is neccessary on our team considering we have a lot of guys in the LB that are still "growing". Phillips is probably the best tackler of the LB except Ray and Sizzle, and maybe JJ.

I like you're high on the kid, but necessary is not the word. He will see the field very little...

While i'm not sure if keeping phillips was the best call, the one thing the ravens with ozzie newsome and the other coaches and front office members know how to do is evaluate defensive talent. If this was as big a discussion with players on the offensive side of the ball then i would be a little worried but it is a defensive decision. I'm sure harbaugh didnt just want to keep this kid for no reason and as has been mentioned he's always around the ball and is a good run stopper. We have guys like ellerbe and kruger who can drop into coverage much better then phillips, but on down and short to go thats where phillips can shine.

I still would have rather had Bynes then Phillips. Phillips is horrible in coverage so I pray he never touches the field.

I disagree that he's necesary, but I share your enthusiasm for him. I really like Phillips, and I agree with most of your points.

I don't care for him mostly due to his uncle an the fact that he messes up more times then not. What I don't understand is that if he made the final 53 man roster then what did he make it for because Burgess is a better ST player?

I am sorry you feel this way, It is a good thing for him you dont pick the team. lets just wait and see how things go. Good Luck.

Neccessary definitely wasn't the word. I was at the time of writing, schmammered from drinking...and obviously creative with my word choice.

I just have a personal love for old-school smash mouth linebackers. Guys that are almost NO flash, but all smash! (rhyming not intentional, but sounds good anyway). I would have no objections if Phillips were in a fair mix of plays as a blitzing backer/gap filler!

Paul Kruger is finally getting some game reps, Sergio Kindle is making his comeback....so Phillips isnt going to see much play time on defense if any at all..he's a special teamer at this point probably...if he's even active for the games.

This is finally the year Kruger gets more reps...not even worried about Phillips at this point

Im interested in guys like Pernel McPhee, Art Jones, Mount Cody, Kruger, Kindle, Cary Williams, and Jimmy Smith
