What Are You Reading/have Read?

27 posts in this topic

Okay so I know reading is kinda goin out of style but I for one enjoy reading. When I find a good book I just can't put it down. Anyways feel free to post here about anything you are currently reading or have read that you would like to share/discuss.

This Summer I read The Long Walk by Stephen King. It was a pretty interesting read. It's about a competition where 100 teenage boys like 16 or 17 go on a long walk. They have to consistently walk at 4 mph and they get 3 warnings if they slow down, fall, ect.. After 3 warnings they "buy their ticket" which essentially means shot to death by the soldiers that watch over them. Last man standing wins and gets whatever he desires for the rest of his life. Anybody heard of it or read it? I actually thought it was pretty good and my explanation probably didn't do it justice.

Currently reading William Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying" (that is, when I'm not perusing these forums )
It's an interesting story about the death of a woman as told through family and friends.

I've always liked Stephen King. He gained a lot of notoriety as a writer of fictional horror but he tells a really good story and that, I think, is the point of good literature. I haven't read that particular book but I do remember reading The Stand, an 800+ page end of the world saga in about 12 hours so I know what you mean by not being able to put a good book down.

I'll definitely give it a read, though.

One I read recently that gave me the "wilies" is The Friend Request by Alex Ford. It isn't the best written book and has a few stupid parts, but it should be a 'must read' for the social media generation. I actually got it because it was the featured free book of the day for Kindle, but I'm glad I read it.

I've read all of Brad Thor's books except his most latest one. I just finished Daniel Silva's newest book "Portrait of a Spy." I've now read all of his books, and I can't get enough of them.

If it doesn't have pictures, Im not reading it :P

I was/am one of those types that could read three pages of a book and wouldn't remember anything that was just read. Kind of sad actually...

I love Stephen King, his short stories are almost as good as his novels (sometimes better). I'm about to start reading The Skeleton Crew, when I get a chance. All of his books are great, though.

Other than that, some football books are good. I just started reading "More Than A Game" which was partially written by Brian Billick; pretty interesting so far, I'm hoping to get some insight that you wouldn't find in the Sun or PFT. Harry Potter is always great, so much more than a "children's" book.

EDIT: The Ender's Game series is also a great one.

I'm a classic novel or non fiction guy myself. I love to fill my brain with useless knowledge. I am also on a mission to read the best autobiography on each US president in order. So far I've made it through Thomas Jefferson.

Some of the recent books I've read: Walden, Atlas Shrugged, The Sound and the Fury (tough read), Einstein: His Life his Universe, What is your dangerous Idea? and The Age of Wonder.

I also had to read Pat Kirwan's football book, Keep your Eye off the Ball. Good football read about how the NFL game is played. Gameplanning, systems, talent evaluation, etc.

Currently reading High Fidelity (I want to re-watch the movie afterwards) from a friends recommendation. I have to take a break from all the James Patterson books I have been reading.

Jeff Shaara "To the Last Man", about WWI. If you like history, I'd recommend his novels. He's written novels on just about every war we've ever been in. He tells them from the perspective of actual historical figures. From Grant and Lee in the Civil War, Ike during WWII, etc. Very good reads, IMO.

Just recently read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. Now, after watching the whole series all over again multiple times in the past month, I'm planning on finishing the Harry Potter book series. Right now, I'm halfway around the Chamber of Secrets. I'm planning on doing the same with Lord of the Rings.

If anybody out there wants any quality, and by quality I mean absolutely amazing, fiction reading, check out Jim Butcher's Dresden Files and Codex Alera. Both are series. The Codex Alera ended at 6 books. The Dresden Files are at 13 and counting. Best Books ive ever read.

If Kevin Byrne wrote a book, I would buy it. Heck, if they just compiled all of his articles I might buy it... if it wasn't already free.

Kevin is a great PR man, by the looks of it, he could crap in a pan and tell you its value is immeasurable and you'd be sold (while storing it in your basement).

Going back to reading all of the Scott Pilgrim comics in the middle of my Harry Potters. It's definitely one of my favorite movies of all time.

Is a pseudonym he made up so he could publish more books.

On topic, all I really read are "horror"or "thriller" novels so if you need a good one just ask. Currently reading The King of Plagues, the third in a trilogy of books with the same "hero". First two are titled "Patient Zero", and "The Dragon Factory"

I will admit to having read quite a few books, for reading is what keeps me sane.

There is one book I would like to have - it's a collection of James Thurber short stories, entitled, "Thurber Country". Maybe I should check with Barnes & Noble for it.
