What If You Were The Offensive Coordinator?

I don't have a problem with the play calls in general in terms of Pass vs. Run plays. My problem with the play calling is that when we have a lead, it seems that we take our foot off the gas and try to just coast to the end of the game and hope the defense can keep things in check. The Ravens need to start finishing games out with more aggressive playcalling.

Oh and I would like to see the WR Reverse or End Around play (whatever you like to call it) trashed.

I just want to see us be efficient and effective. If we're going to try to be a run first team then we need to make sure we're gaining more than 4 yards per carry, otherwise we're not getting it done well enough. A lot of this obviously comes down to the O-line which we've made an attempt to improve. I don't necessarily agree with being "run first" so to speak as I think it's now the time for Flacco to assume the leadership and the responsibility for this offense. I think he's now good enough to throw the ball 25-30 times a game and get it done for us. It just requires us to execute properly, which we couldn't do last year.

We also need to make sure that our plays are tailored to our players' strengths. No more of this "square peg into a round hole" business that I thought I saw a lot of last year. Let Evans, Dickson, Torrey and Reed go deep and let Pitta, Q and Doss run the shorter, underneath routes. Make sure Rice is an option whenever possible.

You make a good point here - it's not a question of how much you run, but how effectively.

Last year we ran 48% of the time, in 2009 45% of the time. However, in '09 we were 5th in the NFL in rushing, and last year we fell to 14th.

That's because in 2009 we were 4th in average, at 4.7 yds/carry. Last year, we averaged only 3.8 yds/carry, 25th in the NFL. That's not enough to have teams respect our ability to run.

Hopefully, the reworked OLine can return our running game to its 2009 numbers...

Also, one other interesting statistic: 6 of the top 10 teams in passing in the NFL last year did not make the playoffs - San Diego (2nd), Houston (4th), Dallas (6th), Denver (7th), Washington (8th) and the Giants (10th).

Like everything in life, nothing is ever as bad or as good as it seems. Cameron wasn't as bad as he is getting slammed for, his "vanilla" play-calls were "boring" because they weren't executed properly - the difference between a boring play and a fundamental play is execution.

That said, he should have compensated for it. It was obviously that our running game would fail almost every time in short-yardage situations and they were averaging less than 4.0 ypc the entire year - it was horrendous. We ran the ball the 6th most in the league, even though we were only the 28th most effective team at doing so. That's a play selection issue. Flacco is supposed to be the franchise quarterback, let him perform. Flacco was among the top 11 in yards/attempt. with 7.4 even though we passed the ball less than the Jets - we were 24th in the league.

Also, I don't know if this was his idea or not. I would not have put Michael Oher at LT over Jared Gaither unless they knew something about Gaither's health before they made the switch. They probably did have some indication that Gaither was ailing, though.

Exactly. When you consider that Flacco still managed to grow as a player and statistically despite the running game being nowhere near as good as it was in '09 you have to appreciate how well he actually did. If we can restore a good ground game then I think Flacco will really excel.
