Referee For Sunday's Game

21 posts in this topic

Kind of a stupid topic, but things have been pretty slow around here we need something to talk about.

www.NFL85.com is saying that Ed Hochuli will be the head referee at our game on Sunday. Perhaps this will allow for many plays to go on without early whistles. Could be a good game for a lot of challenges and turnovers.

What are your thoughts of Ed while he faces harsh criticism over his bad call at the end of the Chargers game? Do you see a change in the way our game will be ref'd, especially since all eyes will be on Ed's rulings? I'm sure our game will get more attention from ESPN on the highlights clips, but it will probably be a mocking of Ed's calls.

Please keep the body building comments to a minimum.

I like Ed, and while his botched call was inexcusable, he is still probably the best ref in the game. I am glad he is doing our game. Once again, though, any media coverage we get will no doubt revolve around Ed or how bad the Browns look and not how our guys dealt with the unexpected "Bye," etc.

I would rather have someone else out there, but theres nothing else we can do.... Ed's a good ref, but he CLEARLY missed the call.. There was no doubt about it.. Sure, refs make mistakes but that was inexcusable.. Thats a call a professional referee has to make.. That call can be the difference between the Chargers making, or missing the playoffs aswell as the Broncos.. Im not sure if i want a guy who missed that call refereeing our game..

Hochuli is a good ref. He knows he made a mistake, he admitted it and has apologized multiple times in multiple ways. The apology I read I thought to myself "I don't know how you could do any better." He is being disciplined by the league and he accepts it, so that's that.

Plus, if the Chargers were really as good as everyone says they are and if they are really "Super Bowl Bound" as a lot of people also think, they would have stopped the Broncos on third down. And they definitely would have stopped a two point conversation that went to the exact same receiver in, more or less, the same area of the end zone. The call sucked for the Chargers and if it would have happened to us I would have been pissed too. But the team gave up the game just as much as Hochuli's mistake did.

As for our game, I'm not worried about it because Hochuli has a good track record. Bring on the Browns...

Well-put. Besides, how many more referees can you name that have consistently done a better job than Hochuli? And with as much class?

Exactly. If the Chargers "deserve" to be in the playoffs, they'll get the job done the rest of this season and go about their business and make the outcome of this game a non-factor. After all, it's still early in the season.
Does the NFL have any accountability structure for the refs?
Yes, there's a grading system that is carried out throughout the season. These grades affect things such as tenure (pay scale), their eligibility to work high-profile primetime games as well as the playoffs and the Super Bowl, and particularly whether they are even retained for the following season.

The main thing to keep in mind is, these officials are not full-time, salaried employees because it's only a seasonal job, and it'd be easier to opt not to renew the contract of an official than to terminate a salaried worker since the latter would require a cause for termination.

These officials have other daytime jobs, and the pressure to do their job well is enhanced by the national stage of the NFL; if an official blows a call, best believe he'll probably hear all about it at his other workplace.

To be perfectly honest, we all make mistakes. He's one of the best in the league, and this will only make him better. He's not a dunce like a lot lot of them are.

I don't think any major outlet will be "mocking" him, he's well respected.

i like the fact that he made a mistake... a huge one ....... i hate that he is being treated like he killed a child, the hate mail is ridiculous...

i like the fact that there is still the human elemnet of judgement and mistakes..... i agree that there should be a rule change, but he made mistake and people need to get over it....
i realize it didn't, but if this would have happened to the ravens v. texans game in the 2nd quarter... this would have been mentioned only for a brief time, rather than 5 days later on a blog for the baltimore ravens.....

Go Ravens

Mocking wasn't the best word there, I do not think anyone will mock him. I'm just saying when ESPN shows highlights of our game, I'm sure there will be clips which involve Ed, because that's what ESPN does. I respect the guy, hes a great ref.

Yeah, agreeing with the common sentiment; I think Ed Hochuli is a great referee, I would have him call a Ravens game any day. Those who choose to judge him negatively for whatever reason should keep in mind that Ed is a head referee, not some line judge or back judge. Not to diminish the responsibility of a line judge or back judge, but there is a reason that Ed is the leader of every single team of officials he is on: he is considered elite among his bosses and his peers. He has a high pressure job, and it's a shame that his public image will be tarnished by a call that he blew at a very inopportune time. If I could pat Ed Hochuli on the back and tell him that as a rabid NFL fan for 15+ years I will always think of him as an elite official then I would. However, I can't, and he probably wouldn't care anyway, I doubt he is in the business for personal glory.

About the blown call last Sunday; it happens. He manned up. Sounds simple enough, but people in the public eye have a hard time admitting when they're wrong. I give him alot of credit for the way he has handled the situation.

I DISAGREE with you both a TON on this... This is a refereee, he made a bad call. All these guys saying its inexcusable, blah blah blah, its BS man. Thats like saying well, peyton manning is a pro bowl QB, him throwing a INT is inexcuseable, therefore should the Colts not allow him to play QB anymore???? All refs make bad calls, or miss calls every game. Just because this was at the end he is getting pounded for it. Its insanse guys, lay off on the man, hes one of the best ref's and one call doesnt mean he all the sudden can't ref anymore.

I'm glad hes reffing out game because hes one of the best, period.

Funny story, in my last game we were actaully pretty neck and neck with the other team, when the refs started making some dumb calls. We all started calling the one guy mr. hochuli
