Torrey Running With 1's Over Doss!?

41 posts in this topic

I just read that since Evans has been out of practice Torrey has been running with the starters. I'm not one of those people running around proclaiming Torrey is a bust but this seems odd to me. Doss has clearly out performed Torrey thus far and has earned snaps with the starters. Yes Torrey was a 2nd rounder and Doss was a 4th rounder but I always thought our team didn't give higher draft picks star treatment, roles on this team aren't given, they're earned. This decision just baffles me, it's not even THAT big of a deal but I just don't understand why Doss isn't getting the extra experience with the starters. It's becoming apparent that Doss will spend more time on the field this year than Torrey with the way things have played out, so in my opinion it's more important for Doss to be in sync with the starting O.

The only logical reason I can think of is that Cam doesn't want two possession guys to throw the offense out of rhythm. Maybe since Doss and Boldin have a similar skill set it's not a good match at wr1/wr2. Torrey has a similar skill set to Evans so it keeps the offenses dynamics in check (possession wr and burner instead of 2 possession guys). plus the extra starter snaps will help Torrey's confidence as well. But when Pitt comes to town I still think it will go (wr1: Boldin, wr: 2 Evans, wr3: Doss). What's your take on it?

A. You are right, Cam wants his deep threat guy out there and not another possession receiver with Q.
B. Torrey actually tears it up in practice. It's live games that he struggles with.
C. Doss is probably getting some snaps with the 1's in 3 WR sets but the most important thing is getting Torrey some confidence so we can unleash him, Evans and Boldin in 3 WR sets. That will open everything underneath.

I totally agree with your fustration. But the way that I understand it - Cam has ALWAYS wanted/needed people to stretch the field to reproduce his San Deigo offense. Therefore I understand and will withhold my anger as Torrey develops in limited time this preseason. I think Doss is a stud. But I think we do need a speedster, if its Torrey or Reed.

Thing is - IF evans goes down for real... we're in trouble. Torrey MUST learn quick.

Exactly. The more reps and practice he gets, the more experience he gets.

People need to relax.... Torrey needs more work right now.. Not to say that Doss doesn't need any more work, but his timing and hands havent been questioned. Torrey has made more mistakes then Doss, Doss is not an outside guy yet. I'd rather see him in the slot.

I get all the reasons behind it, but I still don't like it. If Evans isn't ready to go Week 1 are we seriously going to give Torrey his spot? I'd hope not. He is not ready. He will get there but he isn't even close right now.

On the off chance that we need someone to fill in for Evans Week 1, Reed (who has some speed) should be running with 1's.

We have 1 of the best recieving cores in the NFL. Our first five is great, Q,Evans,Smith,Doss and Reed. Plus 2 pass catching TEs. Im pumped. I dont care if its Doss or Smith in practice, because to quite Allen Iverson, Its Just Practice. But Doss clearly has out performed him this pre-season/training camp.

Torrey is a better replacement for Evans as a speed guy. Doss is better in the slot. I like that Torrey is getting reps, he needs them.

I think it's good to give Torrey practice with 1st team as much as he can. We need his confidence and swagger on the field. He has the skill set the burn the DBs in the back but lack of confidence and feel of the game. Cam needs a legitimate backup for Evans. We see how Evans make Cam looked so genius in the last 2 PS games? Our coaches are doing great job right now, and Torrey is a very hard worker so it would pan out well for us.....

PS: I think we shouldn't put too much pressure on the kid as for myself too, and let him turn to what he's supposed to be.......

Torrey needs the most work. It is still preseason, after all. I'd like to see him play a lot of snaps against Atlanta - all of our other receivers have flashed brilliance.

Whether you like it or not, the Ravens have too much invested in Torrey Smith to just but him at the bottom of the depth chart after only a few bad games. He's going to get more burn with the first team over Reed and Doss because of his draft status. Can't really blame the Ravens for that.

I completely agree, I will never understand how we can continue to feature certain players over better players then continue to make excuses for them. Anyone with eyes will tell you Torrey isn't ready to start.

I agree with most of what you have written. Smith needs reps to get better and gain the necessary confidence to be a factor this season. Reed and Doss have already proven that they deserve a roster spot. I don't think that Smith will let anyone down this time. He will have a few catches and make the critics rethink the bust theory. Smith will spend a lot of time watching from the sidelines this year. Hopefully, he will be ready when his number is called later on in the season.

Yep. That's usually how it works at the skilled positions.

You can't draft a guy in the 2nd round, play him three preseason games and give up on him. They saw (and see) something in him that they think can help this team. He's going to get his opportunities whether we like it or not.

That's why I am not sure how many snaps a guy like Doss will see this year. Smith would have to continue to struggle greatly. We've seen plenty of PS heros that never even make their way onto the active Roster.

Torrey was running with the 1s before Evans got there, so with Evans out a few days with an 'injury' they let Torrey take the first team reps...it helps with his confidence and gives him more reps and once he learns to calm down and CATCH the ball all will be good.

Its nothig to go crazy over guys

Trust the coaches. I'm sure it's got something to do with keeping the offense diverse and not one-dimensional. We wouldn't accomplish as much with two Boldin's on the field. Torrey isn't good yet, but his speed will give Boldin more room to work with underneath. I don't think its got anything to do with him being a 2nd rounder. In addition to keeping the O diverse, it also gets him more reps. I see no issue here.

Its a combination of complimenting skill sets, what they have invested in Torrey compared to Doss and frankly after 1 training camp its too early to pass off on Torrey and give Doss the time with the 1s. Plus this is the "natural progression" so to speak, Torrey is the #3 on the depth chart, Evans gets hurt, everyone bumps up 1 spot, no leapfrogging. If this was year 3 for both Doss and Smith and Smith was still with the 1s then Id be inclined to agree. But Smith needs that faster pace the 1s provide to get used to the game,
