Looks like a youth movement is in full effect concerning their Offensive Line.

I know nobody's said anything yet, I don't want us to sign him. Old, hurt, and we too need a youth movement. I'm good with Birk, Mattison, and Barnes. Cowboys must be really rebuilding.

If Mattison had played awfully in preseason then I wouldn't have ruled out us making a move for him but as it is I doubt we're significantly interested.

Also, don't read too much in to the pro-bowls. We all know o-lineman get in more because of name/team rather than how good they are.

I guess if Birk is really questionable for week 1, we could try signing him for cheap.

Mattison played too well and he deserves a shot to stick around. He's been great this preseason and I wouldn't be shocked if we see him starting week 1 and playing really well. He understands how the DL works and you can see he's been spot on, rarely missing an assignment.

I don't see us making a play for him, barring a massive amount of injuries. I was just a little surprised that the Cowboys would let go off both Gurode and Davis in the same Offseason.

I don't know about that dude. Jake Long's on the Dolphins, and he's a pro bowler. Jordan Gross made the pro bowl with Carolina. Joe Thomas, and Ryan Clady are also pro bowl OL on bad teams. Matt Birk's made the pro bowl as a Viking, and they haven't been too spectacular in the 2000's.

And many times, I find that good teams often have good offensive linemen. It all starts in the trenches.

Obviously it doesn't all work like that, because they are still big names. JO made it every year, even when there were obviously better options at tackle.

The Cowboys themselves weren't satisfied with his performance, and I remember watching a lot of the Cowyboys games his most recent pro-bowl year, and really I didn't see anything great. Obviously I'm no expert, but he doesn't seem anything more than an above average center.

Plus, the Haynesworth incident definitely helped him in terms of name recognition. Unlike the AFC, there aren't many big name centers in the NFC to compete with.

There is only one guy I can think of that performed on JO's level during those years, who else did you have in mind ?

But you said:

"We all know o-lineman get in more because of name/team rather than how good they are."

In most cases if you know an offensive lineman's name, he's really good, or really bad, or on your favorite team, or on a rival's team.
Also, like I mentioned earlier, team success is largely related to the success of the offensive line. Therefore, teams with good olines, tend to be good.

I don't think anyone is "obviously" better than Ogden.

Gurode may have been in the same boat as Heap/Mason/McGahee/Gregg. Old, overpaid, and there was a younger backup that could do a equal or better job.

Not to double post, but having a great team doesn't mean you have a pro-bowl individual lineman. It could also, more times than not mean you have a very solid group of o-lineman, with only 1 or no all-pro/pro-bowl caliber player.

Sometimes an o-lineman's name can stick for too long. You might know his name because he was good, but sometimes fans just stick to the name without looking at the yearly performances.

Agreed, but the tendency is that good teams have good linemen. That's all I'm tryna say.

Yeah, I agree too.

I just thought that Gurode gets a little overrated.
