The Raven

Jumbo Package

28 posts in this topic

Now that we have signed McKinnie, and Oher is back at RT, I have an idea. Reid showed me a lot of potential, and I thought he was a good runblocker. Who knows if Cam would run something bizarre like this, but what if we used an unbalanced line with Reid lined up next to Oher as a jumbo package? That could really move some bodies.

Cam likes to use the 'jumbo' package in some goal line situations, remember Ngata coming over and helping the OL in years past...I could definitely see something similar if they wanted to use Reid or Ngata its really a matter of what situation we're in

..but i think it will be something we'll see

I hope it is. I can only imagine what kind of havoc that line could unleash with Leach at FB. We could even add LeVoir and/or Boren if we wanted to.

It would be mass protection, send Q, Evans, and Dickson out and Joe would have all day to look for open receivers

I dunno about passing out of it lol, but the run game could be devastating.

You would think but there were times last year even with Ngata in there that the line still couldnt open any holes

The run game should be improved once the line gels together, guys like Oher at RT will help a lot

Id love to see reid in the tackle spot and put oher beside him.. We could run some nasty plays outta that..
Loved to see oher and leach downfield blocking for a screen in that set

Jumbo package might work for an end-around, but I have my doubts. We'll see soon enough.
[/quote]

I agree, imagine how hard Reid would be to bring down in the backfield if he was sent out on an end around :P

The image of Cam searching for ways to make the end-around work amuses me. Just putting in twenty-hour days trying to make this endaround happen, and Harbs hanging over his shoulder going "Why don't we, like, just ... just give it to Rice up the middle or something? He's ... really, he's good at running, I promise you." And Cam muttering under his breath like a man possessed.

Defenses have adjusted well to the Jumbo/unbalanced line in the last 2 years. I can see some play action or screens run while in these packages to back up corners and safeties. This would open the jumbo/unbalance line up for runs by making it less predictable.

That's the problem with systems, football is constantly evolving, always a counter developed for something that's repeated. Sometime the simplest way is the best. Have many plays that can be run from one formation. That way they can never tell what is coming next. Deception is the key.

In my opinion

GO RAVENS!

yes, being able to run various plays out of the same look is good, defenses are then left to guess

I couldn't help but think of the wild-cat. It wreaked havoc when it was first introduced, now its just a gimmick...

Probably will...but I swear I can't think of too many instances where these Jumbo packages met with much success.

I can't either, I really just wanna see it on 3rd/4th and short , and on the goalline.

i like the idea, but the one thing i hear about Oher every single day is how atheltic he is, so what about the possibility of putting oher in as an elligble tight end and going jumbo play action and dishing an easy pass to oher around the goal line. im sure the big boy can at least catch a little

I wouldn't be surprised to have Ngata or Cody or any other DL player line-up as a TE in a jumbo package. I don't care who lines up there, as long as they can move the chains consistently - something that did not happen last season.

Ya know, why not? We did it with Ogden. Oher's no JO obviously but I'm sure he could catch a pass or 2.

I saw a stat earlier that said the Ravens were 3rd in offensive plays for negative yards last season with 107, so anything that could possibly help correct that this season is worth a shot!

I hope we don't go back to using Ngata on the goal line. That one time we got a real scare where he injured himself. I would prefer him to stay just on defense. We have Leach, no need to risk Ngata.

I agree. Defensive players play defense, offensive players play offense. At least thats my opinion. We have a lot more big bodies on the OL this year, so we won't have any need to throw Ngata or Cody in there.

Indeed! Leach may prove to be his own "jumbo package"

With McKinnie on the line won't every package be a Jumbo package?

In all seriousness, I'd only like to see something like that if we're running for short yardage, like on the goal line or 3rd and 1. We were too run orientated for a few years there, and we lacked focus last year because we couldn't run. I'd much rather see a shift to a more balanced attack, considering we have the personnel to pull it off this year.

Are you talking about the Broncos game from last season? Ngata was injured on a play (4th down, I believe) that tried to pass him the ball. That's just ... not the best idea in my opinion, but using him on the line once in a while isn't that big of a deal to me.
