Observations/predictions From The Preseason And Especially Last Game

25 posts in this topic

Luckily I've been able to record every game on DVR, and ive watched each... several times just to analyze things. There are a ton of things to touch on and take notice of. If anyone else has anything else that I fail to write in this, feel free to share. Offense
~~ Joe should have a great year this year, if Lee and Q can stay healthy all year. Joe looked alittle off the second game, but honestly, playing behind the offensive line they fielded... I would have been antsy and inaccurate also. But against the redskins, he was on POINT with Evans again for 2 consecutive games. Im looking for him to have fun with Evans, Q, Doss, Dickson, Rice. Tyrod was a steal, pretty sure he will be the #2 depending on how rosters pan out on tuesday.

~~The WR corps was a concern 2 weeks ago for me. Look, Smith is struggling this preason, doesnt mean hes not gonna be something special for us. You can tell hes thinking to much, and you can tell its throwing his game off. Once he calms down and just plays football, he'll be fine. Hes trying to impress everyone and he just needs to relax. Williams has intrigued me, I'm looking forward to seeing what he can turn into (should be a st contributor). Doss, just as I said early in the offseason, hes gonna end up being Joe's favorite 3rd down reciever. His hands are ridiculous, and the best in the draft, he fights and attacks the ball when its in the air. Oh ... and he isnt afraid to stick his head in there and block on run plays, he's stuck every DB i watched when he was blocking for Ray.

~~TE's..... first off, miss you Heap, and love ya man, you've meant alot to the Ravens organization and the fanbase. And I wish you the best of luck, and im happy he is able to be back in AZ. Im sure he'll get some HEEEEEEEAP chants from our fanbase when he visits the Bank. That being said... Dickson is gonna be a BEAST.... him, just like Doss, goes and attacks the ball when the ball is in the air. Hes gonna be nasty down the middle. i believe this is an upgrade. Needs to become alittle more savy with route running, and master his blocking. I cant wait to come out in 22 personel with Dickson, Pitta, Leach, Rice, and Evans on the outside, or even Q cause hes a mean blocker. equally as dangerous keeping it on the ground as doing damage in the passing attack (while having multiple protection packages available depending on the defense).

~~OL...whoa, ok long story short.... Mckinnie, grubbs, birk/mattison, yanda, Oher... YES please... Lavior, Reid, as backups. Oh and on Reid something i noticed. This kid is savy, and really smart... not sure why other linemen , even vets dont do this. Both those flags that were thrown in the redskins game, as soon as he saw the defender cross the line of scrimage, Reid jumped, to cause a dfensive penalty (incroachment)... first down ravens, twice... on third down.... to sustain a long 7 point scoring drive. I would have taken that last year in the playoff game... hell... ill take it this year against Pit. This is a tool im not sure why wiley vets dont do it. It SUSTAINS drives.

~~Backs: Ray is gonna have a huge year... Leach is a moster, LOVE him as a Raven (Cam will utilize him in the passing game to.. watch). I said before the second game I thought Parmale would be the third back, because the ravens coaching staff has stated countless times how much confidence they have in him, and how much they like him. I think with the emergence of Laquan, Reed healthy again, and the fact that Allen is already proving he can play in this league, I believe Parmale is on the verge of being out of the equation.

~~Playcalling. Umm from what I see, Cam really isnt doing anything, except trying to test his young guys in different situations. Its preseason and this is evaluating talent and schemes. Cam is questionable at times, but honestly.... hes a really good OC and ive seen him making some AMAZING schemes/calls. again... 22 personnel.

Defense
~~Dline: I dont think Cody>Greg is an upgrade.... yet. Cody was a good pick for us, and hes a hard worker, pretty smart, and guess what, his weight is down. Redding... is either ON POINT, or really sloppy. I think with a rotation of Mcphee, Divens, Mckinney, Jones, this could become really interesting for Pagano with all the options. Mcphee... needs to get on the field, his motor is ridiculous, and he has a knack for stepping up when a play needs to be made. Love what they said about his draft pick "we love them from the swamp".

~~Backers: Not much to say here. Ray is Ray, and having kindle on the field is pretty nice too, he's proven he can be dangerous as well (2 funny/missed punt blocks)... he'll get one

~~DB's: Jimmy is nasty first off, I'm SOOOO happy we grabbed him. Hes physical, really physical, will come up and play well against the run, he has blanketed everyone Ive seen him cover, including a pro-bowler in Bowe. Once he learns to get his head around faster, and realize the NFL he cant be "quite" as cocky... hes gonna be nightmare for WR in the future. Cary Williams... I started saying this last year during preseason, hes impressive, press corner, makes big plays when you need them. I would not be surprised... if he starts over Smith. Carr had a rough preseason, but I love carr in the slot. He lead the team in FF last year.. Glad to have Fox back somewhat healthy, and Webb needs to hold onto the ball, Webb is hot and cold just as Redding is. POLLARD!!!!!!! upgrade......................................... nuf said.

~~Playcalling/schemes: dont worry about how our defense has looked, again this is evaluating talent and seeing what will work/not work with this personnel. He hasnt been game planning. I love Pagano as a DC, but dont be surprised if because of the aggressiveness, we get beat at times. Will be a risk/reward type of year, but overall, we will be a top 3 Defense this year IMO.

********Just something to note. During the last drive of the redskins game (tyrods game winning drive), Ray was on the sideline giving an interview to michelle tafoya. Started out with Joe coming and pouring cold water on Lewis during the interview, Ray rice coming and laughing in the camara, then Ray proceeding to commentate the remainder of the game. (He did damn well... was happy hearing him and not chucky and jaws. Shortly after, it showed Ray rice, doing Ray's "squirrel dance" in Lewis's face.... (he didnt do it well, but it wasnt bad... i saw Rice saying ray I cant do it man, i cant do it). Ray looked at Rice with more joy and happiness then I've ever seen in his face. I will NOT be surprised, if Daddy Ray, is gonna pass this tradition off to baby Ray. Looks like its almost planned.

Good post but I think there's more to be excited about with the linebackers. Obviously we're all excited to see what Kindle can do when he's in on third downs but also Kruger being moved back outside is noteworthy. I think he will also be a contributor this year, much more than he has been for the past two years at least.

good point. I didnt forget about Kruger, I think it was just alittle late last night and began to shorten it alittle lol. But how could I leave out Kruger. At the end of last year, I saw the pressure he was getting, and knew it was just about time for his breakout. This may be that year. His motor is amazing, he's developing his moves, he takes on the double team and still manages to find his way through, and hes better in coverage. Im looking forward to him making plays all year long

Nice read man. Ive seen every snap so far and Id agree with every analysis you have made. Im unbelievably stoked for this coming season, Ive got a great feeling about the year.

Flacco has taken that next step, he is elite in my eyes. Big year coming for the guy, he will prove all the naysayers wrong.

Torrey needs to use his hands to catch, not his body and he will be just fine. Doss has got SICK hands and has a mean streak when he blocks, love this player.

Pernell is my fav player just now, what a tenacious guy. Pahokee High School produces some toughhhhh players, (Just like Q). This guy is a stud and will get good playing time this year, I think at this point he is our best kept secret for week 1. With a weak Steeler O line I think once they get tired Pags will sick McPhee on them.

Cary and Jimmy if they can start and be the huge press corners they are and play at a high level, that is going to be great for our division. Aj Green for the Bungals has looked impressive and Jimmy blanketed him in college.

Thanks man, and yup, I agree with pretty much everything. Its amazing when we look back at the draft, what do we see?

Jimmy Smith .........steal at #26/27
Jah Reid................steal in the 3rd (have a STRONG feeling he will end up as our LT for the future, he has ALL the tools necessary)
Tandon Doss.........steal in the 4th (will start over Smith and Reed, although both will find some playing time)
Pernell Mcphee......STEAL in the 5th (your right about him being tenacious, and I hope Pagano uses him well, hes a playmaker)
Tyrod Taylor...........STEAL in the 6th (im impressed by his demienor (sp), and even more impressed by his progression, seen him make 2 audibles that were the right read)
Anthony Allen.........Steal in the 7th

May turn out to be the deepest draft class we have ever had, all these guys have starting potential in the next few years. The lockout really put our Front Office in draft mode, they did a lot of research. Ravens always draft well, its why we are successful every year and teams who consistently pick higher then us cant draft at the same level.

Jah Reid has huge upside. He played really well all 3 games, hes just a natural. He probably will turn out to be our LT. We have McKinnie signed up for 2 years and if he can produce anywhere close to how he did in 2009 we are set. Oher being back at RT now can , prove that he his the best RT in the game. Jah is more of a prototype LT then Mike because of his height. In 2 years time for Jah in our system with our trainers Id say its a safe bet he`ll be our next starting LT.

Man, great run down, I think Tandon "The Boss" Doss (someone gave him that nickname in one of articles I read on the site) is going to be our number 3, or It might be D.Reed, I don't know they're both great, T.Smith just needs a little more time, and like you said he needs to not think so much.

Me too. It makes a difference to feel that we have a number of guys who can produce a pass rush rather than relying on just Suggs for once.

Well, we can't say they're all steals. Lol

I think Jah has the size for LT, but not the feet, or agility. He's not good enough in pass protection. Though, I'd like to see him at LT in a preseason game for sure.

well , I did leave out "shockey Brown". so technically, its not all lol..oh and Torrey Smith.

however , i meant just on talent from what we've seen so far and what projections are, and where they were taken in the draft. Like Jimmy is a top 15 talent, Jah could have been taken in the second and it would have been a solid pick, Doss could have been taken in atleast the 3rd, Pernell in the 4th, tyrod in the 4th/5th, and Allen could have been taken in the 5th and we all would consider them a decent pick.

Yeah, looking back they all could have went a round earlier in my opinion. We got good value for those picks.

we absolutely did. I wanna see Pernell against a starting Oline. And of course Cam is gonna put Tyrod in the wildcat with williams and rice.
Boldin KcKinnie, Grubbs, Birk, Yanda, Oher, Dickson EvansWilliams, Taylor, Rice
The options are limitless to be an equally effective run/pass play.

Not a fan at all of the Wildcat.... but that package you listed above could be VERY effective against a few teams on our schedule.

im with you on that one, he will be a pro bowl RT, its where he needs to be, oh and.... he wont demand LT money. Im really intrigued to look into Reid at LT, or perhaps something comes in the draft, that we can pay rookie money to, but get a really solid LT from it.
