Observations From The Game

66 posts in this topic

There were a lot of good things shown, and also a bunch of bad things. here are some early observations before I watch the game again.

1. Leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! This guy is going to be a fan favorite here in Baltimore. Great hands, great speed, and play making ability demonstrated yet again from Evans.

2. Joe and Boldin looked to be more in sync this week. Joe missed a few throws, but overall, looked much more crisp with his throws.

3. Cary Williams had another solid performance. I really liked how he didn't give up on that endzone pass that could have been a touchdown. Cary put a strong bid to be one of the starting Corners on 9/11.

4. Foxworth looked very shaky as well as Webb. Both of them played well off of their receivers and once again, I saw Webb have to chase down his receiver after he was beat.

5. Jimmy Smith played solid aside from the touchdown to moss, which Smith really didn't get beat on the play, just a mental blown coverage mistake. should be good to go for the regular season.

6. I'm really excited about the big play ability from the combo of our tight ends. Dickson will blow the top off of the linebackers and Pitta will do the work inside the hashes. Dickson had some nice grabs tonight.

7. Ray Rice showed that he probably has the softest hands of any running back in the league with those one handed grabs out of nowhere. Really impressed with those catches.

8. Torrey Smith's drops are starting to be a concern. There were a few drops that were questionable, but on one of the drops, Torrey was wide open and it bounced out of his hands.

9. Tandon Doss and David Reed are battling it out for the number 3 job. Doss showed off yet again why people rave about his soft hands. He's been catching everything. It will be interesting to see him get more looks when we get things rolling in the regular season.

10. Tyrod Taylor took a huge step and seems to be progressing every week. Flashed the obvious elusiveness, but also showed better pocket presence, game management, and accuracy. I'm starting to feel better about our backup.

11. Anthony Allen might have taken the lead for the 3rd running back spot with his solid performance. Parmele didn't stand out as he hasn't stood out at all this pre-season. I think it's Allen's job to lose now and he should get a lot of looks in the next game when starters don't play a lot.

12. Mcphee's motor is something you can't teach. He has determination, "heavy hands" and always seems to be trying to make a play. He truely does play like a Raven. Another good outing for him.

13. As much as I hate to say this, Bryan Mattison hasn't been playing bad these past 2 weeks. I was always one to bash him just because I thought he was floating on the team just because he was the son of Greg Mattison. He's played okay in terms of filling the void while Birk is recovering. Gotta give it to him.

Webb had a nice pick but despite that and his speed I just dont trust him in man. Especially on a slot.

My biggest observation was that Oher is not a Lt and probably never will be, e was terrible tonight and it is not like this is the first time.

As far as Anthony Allen a couple more strong showings and if it is going off of play he is our 2 back where williams might just be relegated to inside the 2 carries.

Fox needs to catch the train.

If webb cant do anything but blitz we either need to try him out at safety or he can get on the same train as Fox, but he is still young so there is still some hope there.

As far as Tandon v.s. Reed I dont see the competition, Tandon doss wins.

Everything else is spot on

Good obseravtions...i'd just like to answer some of yours and raise some questions as well

1. Do we really have depth at corner? williams and smith played well...webb had an interception but he and foxworth were consistently beat. Just want to make sure we arent mistaking a little bit of experience as depth.

2. I agree with you completely, tandon doss was not a FIRST round draft pick because of his speed, you could argue this guy is the second best rookie wide reciever in the nfl right now behind jones (cobb has looked ok, aj green and hankerson have dropped as many passes in 3 preseason games as chris carter dropped his entire career)

3. Our tight ends are electric and steadily improving in their blocking...no big impact blocks tonight i can recall but just solid protection

4. been saying it from the beginning give tyrod time and hell produce

5. Anthony allen didnt just take the third spot from parmele, he earned the spot. Parmele has 2 carries for 2 yards tonight and a fumble. Allen had 4 carries for 27 yards. Yes he dropped the possible game winning touchdown but this guy played in an option offense at georgia tech. Unlike smith who is a wide reciever, this guy was not brought in to be a pass catching back..he is a bruiser and his 6.8 yards per carry average showed it. Would have loved to see us pound the ball in on the goal line with allen but o well

6. Mchpee is outstanding and a steal...enough said. But also dont forget kindle he had a very good game as well.

7. Do we need birk? i understand he's a vetern but with guys like mattison and boren playing very very well...seems a little like an expendable player we could cut to save some cap room...just a suggestion

My number one observation is that whoevers choice it was to leave Rice in for that long is not a smart person ... to put it kindly. He doesn't need that may touches to be ready for the season.

T. Smith... terrible hands.
Flacco.... looks uncomfortable.
Webb and Fox dont look sharp.

Mcphee is an animal and deserves be in on every down they think the offense is going to pass.
Doss catches everything.
Boldin and Evans looks like they could make a great 1, 2 punch

The bad

1. Slow start- This is a trend that needs to stop. We did it last year and it hurt us. Especially with the play of the offensive line.

2. Offensive line- I think part of it was the McKinnie distraction at the O line position. Part of it was the Redskins improving their D. Part of it, is we need our starters back bad. And McKinnie needs to make an impact.

3. Defense struggles- Where was the pass rush pressure on the first team defense. Or the run defense? And the cornerbacks/secondary was inconsistent. Made the Skins look like a powerhouse offense

4. It is a preseason game- Playing the Steelers week 1 is a good and a bad thing. Because they are the team we need to beat, but I know our team will be prepared and come out guns blazing week 1 because of it. Because the Ravens played like this was a preseason game.

5. Torrey Smith- just bad. Gotta be dependable
The good

1. Flacco to Evans and Boldin and Dickson- Beautiful. Good to see some YAC too

2. Rice had another couple long runs even with the "second" string O line.

3. McPhee is an animal and needs to get playing time

4. Sam Koch and Cundiff has some great plays

5. Tandon Doss attacks the ball

6. The team bounced back after a slow start. The second quarter was very good.

Overall, I think this was a preseason game and I didn't feel the intensity I think the Ravens can play with. I think that was the main thing with this team. I really felt they were playing at 70% the whole game. There are certain things I would like to see improvement with, but I think I'm going to look at this game a couple weeks in the season and wonder why I was getting so angry about a preseason game

Tandon Doss! If he isn't the 3rd WR by the 1/4 way through the season I will be shocked. This guy goes after every ball no matter where it is, and has arguably the best hands of any of our WRs. Mcphee (along with Doss) looks to be the steal of our draft, and If not for playing at schools who aren't major title contenders could have been 2nd round picks. Doss has some speed but that isn't where we need him. (he ran a 4.5 while AJ Green ran a 4.48 and Jon Baldwin ran a 4.49) I want this guy on the field!!!

a) Ricky can block

b ) Was Cousins even there? If I didn't hear his name called, then he did good enough

c) This is how the Steelers did against Grossman: (they got torched) http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011081253/2011/PRE1/steelers@redskins#tab:analyze

d) JJ is going to have another underrated season.

e) The 'Skins proved how much they wanted to win when they ran a Steeler-like defense. Very confusing up front. I think our line handled it well considering they didn't gameplan.

f) Joe is finally moving the line around to pick up blitzes.

What I can't stand about Oher is his mental mistakes. It's one thing to get beat by your man. There was at least one or two plays where he didn't block anybody...again...just like last week...what the heck!?

I agree for the most part:

Cary Williams wasn't as solid as last week. Sorry. He just wasn't. That he managed to break-up a touch down pass doesn't negate the fact that, on that entire drive, he got worked; his man was repeatedly passed to all the way to the end-zone. He is a great player. I am excited to have him. I hope he continues to impress and improve. While Jimmy got a lesson in NFL coverage from Bowe last week, Cary got his from Santana Moss this week. Better this week than Sept. 11. Hopefully he'll learn a few things.

Our defense looks strong! I am excited about it. Blitzing as much as we do makes me a little bit nervous but I like what I've seen so far. Pagano is already much better than Mattison IMO. With the exception of that run from Hightower, our run defense looks solid as always.

Our O-line has some additional work but, with the starters back, and McKinnie, i think we'll be more solid. That being said, I hope this is in fact what Joe's problem has been. Excited to see some improvement next week. We have two weeks until Steelers week.

The last thin I observed...I can't stand Gruden. He is clearly NOT a Raven!

Torrey is no where near ready to be a starter. He had his chances the past 3 games and haven't shown anything.. very disappointed.. Doss and Reed have to be the only 2 battling for the 3rd spot after this game no questions asked.

Guys the ravens went hollywood with Oher, move him back to the side where he was the second best RT in the nfl his rookie year. We have tons of youth and not a lot of holes...lets get ngatas deal done...push harewood as much as we can this year and whip him into the LT prospect he can be...and if all else fails lets trade up in the draft to a top 10 pick and take a LT for the future. The ravens solve defensive problems internally, but its a FACT that this team just does not quite develop offensive talent as well as we do defensive talent. Theres nothing wrong with admitting you have one serious flaw and trade up in the draft, heck the falcons did it just last year...lets put away our egos and draft a LT next year who can be as close to ogden as we can get (although noone becomes ogden...he was the best weve ever had and maybe we ever will have)

You can't stand a guy that practically worships our team every time he calls a game that we are in? He dishes out the Raven love more than anyone at ESPN.

He may love the Ravens and I thank him for that, but he just doesn't know when to stop talking... seriously...

Sorry for being off-topic.

I think that the 1st Team Offense stepped it up after the first 2 drives.

I think that the 1st Team Defense declined after the 1st 2 3-and-outs from the Washington Redskins.

Everyone looked "good", but I want everyone to look "great" against the Steelers.

I actually think that Cary was behind a little too often, especially when playing at the Nickle spot. I loved his determination to knock the ball out from Moss' grip in the end zone, however. Definitely made up for getting beat on the play.

This is exactly what i said when everyone talked about trading foxworth...cary william and jimmy smith ARE NOT nick cornerbacks. They are 6 foot 1 and 6 foot 2, they are too big and its just too difficult for them to guard these guys like sanatan moss who is 5 foot 10. We are NOT deep at corner because we only have guys who can cover bigger physical wide recievers in williams and smith. Any wide reciever taller then 6 feet ill take either of those guys ever day...i want carr to get healthy and see how he plays in the nickle spot because i think he matches up very well in the nickle and played well last year

1: Pernell McPhee a beast once again, in pass rush and run stopping

2: Foxworth did not look great in his return

3: I gotta feeling that Doss could be our number 3 receiver

4: Blocking did well today, can't wait to see what Bryant McKinnie can bring, Jah Reid still looked solid.

5: Anthony Allen is a great 3rd string running back, minus the dropped TD catch

6: Tyrod Taylor did pretty good, came back in a 4-point deficit to win the game. Can be a really good back-up QB

7: Webb is a blitzing master, he could be a good safety if he bulked up a little

and finally Ray Lewis is a great commentator
