53 Man Roster

27 posts in this topic

With the preseason and training camp nearing a close, the 53 man roster is an issue to be discussed. What are your thoughts?

Mine:

Offense: 25

QB: Flacco, Taylor, Cantwell/FA (3)
HB - Rice, Williams, Allen (3)
FB - Leach (1)
TE - Dickson, Pitta (2)
T - McKinnie, Harewood, Oher, Reid (4)
G - Grubbs, Yanda, Boren, Cousins (4)
C - Birk, Mattison (2)
WR - Boldin, Evans, Smith, Doss, Reed, Williams (6)

Defense: 25

DE - Ngata, Redding, Jones, McPhee (4)
NT - Cody, McKinney, Divens (3)
OLB - Suggs, JJ, Kruger, Kindle (4)
ILB - Ray, McClain, Ellerbe, Gooden (4)
FS - Reed, Nakamura (2)
SS - Zibby, Pollard (2)
CB - Foxy, Carr, Webb, Smith, Brown, Williams (6)

Special Teams - 3

K - Cundiff
P - Koch
LS - Cox

PS - 7

Damien Berry - HB
Josh Bynes - ILB
Albert McClellan - LB
Josh Victorian - S
Talmadge Jackson - S
Ryan Mahaffey - FB
Kris Wilson - TE

Explanations:

I'd like to keep 3 quarterbacks, just in case. You never know when a quarterback will get hurt, better safe than sorry.

Last year we had depth issues at offensive line, I want to keep ten offensive linemen, the game is won in the trenches.

We have many young players with potential at WR, and any of them will get scooped off the PS. Laquan Williams looks explosive, and looks to be a good return man for us.

NT depth looks pretty shaky, McKinney is solid, but Divens...

At ILB, I think we need to get younger and such. Ayanbadejo has less value with the changes made to kickoffs, and his spot could be used by someone like Laquan Williams who is a promising young return man. He doesn't do much for us defensively anyway. Burgess is in the same boat. Phillips has shown nothing, which is a shame, I was really pullin for him.

The practice squadders I got have all made big plays for us, excpet Berry, but I think he has some potential, and I wanna keep him in case of injury, and for next year. Mahaffey is a keeper, just in case Leach gets hurt. It's a safety blanket, and its keeping talent.

Thoughts?

like it for the most part, very happy and agree that you have williams making the team and have allen in there over parmele...:Laquan shows he can return punts and reed looks great on his kickoff return. Mehaffey had a nice run after his catch after the first hit and agree we should keep him. I'm not so sure about divens and im not so sure if chykie brown makes the team...2 other defensive backs have made big interceptions playing against similar competition as brown.

Also are you really going to keep harewood on the team this year after not playing at all due to injury last year...Levoir brings us versatility to play the tackle and guard position so i just think he would be a little more likely to make the team. Also i kinda think we will not keep cantwell and instead keep kris wilson on the team as our third tight end. He's very good at blocking and had some huge catches tonight. instead we would put harewood on the practice squad for one more year and really evaluate his talent as our possible LT of the future when hes healthy.

Other then that i like what you put together, seems very realistic to me

I'm pretty sure that Cary Williams won't be behind Webb, Carr, and Brown on the depth chart. He's started the last two preseason games and played very well. Carr should be kept inside at the nickel and we should have Smith and Williams as the starters IMO. Don't understand why people defend Foxworth I've never been impressed with him and he's coming off an ACL injury looking atrocious out there.

Unless we bring in a veteran backup we'll only carry 2 QB's. No way Cantwell makes the team. I'm not sure on Divens either. The team has given Ayanbadejo a lot of time to come back from injury so I don't see them giving up on him now so I would give him Diven's spot. We don't need three NT. He was actually playing pretty well on defense before he got hurt 2 years ago. Also, Kris Wilson is a veteran so he cannot be placed on the practice squad. Otherwise I agree with a lot of what you have there.

I'm keeping Divens cuz... we really don't have anyone else to be the third string NT. He provides depth. If someone better turns up, I'll be happy, but right now he's the best depth we got. Chykie Brown will make the team, not many teams cut draft picks. He's got too much potential to be placed on the PS either. He'll get scooped up quick.

I can agree with that, I wouldn't mind practice squadding Harewood again. The concern is, he may be picked up by another team. If we ditch Cantwell for Wilson I wouldnt be hurt either, I just like to be safe at the QB position.

I was unaware that Kris Wilson is a vet and ineligible for the PS.

Just kind of curious to see what other people think the final roster will look like since there have been some unexpected moves lately. Feel free to throw some on the bubble guys as well.

QB - Joe Flacco, Tyrod Taylor
RB - Ray Rice, Ricky Williams, Anthony Allen
FB - Vonta Leach
WR - Anquan Boldin, Lee Evans, David Reed, Tandon Doss, Torrey Smith, LaQuan Williams
TE - Ed Dickson, Dennis Pitta, Kris Wilson
OL - Bryant McKinnie, Ben Grubbs, Matt Birk, Marshal Yanda, Michael Oher, Justin Boren, Ramon Harewood, Bryan Mattison, Mark Levoir

DL - Haloti Ngata, Brandon McKinney, Terrence Cody, Cory Redding, Arthur Jones, Pernell McPhee, Lamar Divens
OLB - Terrell Suggs, Jarret Johnson, Sergio Kindle, Paul Kruger, Prescott Burgess
MLB - Ray Lewis, Jameel McClain, Dannell Ellerbe, Tavares Gooden
CB - Jimmy Smith, Cary Williams, Domonique Foxworth, Chris Carr, Lardarius Webb, Chykie Brown
S - Ed Reed, Bernard Pollard, Tom Zbikowski, Haruki Nakamura

LS - Morgan Cox
P - Sam Koch
K - Billy Cundiff

I had 50 that I feel will definitely make it, leaving 3 spots up for grabs. I filled those spots with Divens, Burgess, and Brown. It may also be possible that we sign a veteran QB taking one of those spots away.

Thoughts?

For what its worth, I pretty much agree with you on your roster. Kris Wilson would be the "shocker", but I could see it happening.

Three QBs will never happen. That's why they have a practice squad. I don't think they signed LeVoir just to cut him. What about adding another FB in case Leech goes down? I do see us signing a veteran center after one is cut by another team. Brown is a longshot. Let's just see how it goes in the Falcons game. After that, we will have a better picture of where the Ravens are going with the 53.

I'd be very suprised if Cantwell made the team. I'd much rather roll with two QB's and roll with a player like Barnes or Berry on the roster.

Also, I'd like to think we'd put McAdoo on the PS.

I dodnt think McAdoo has shown enough (so far) to be kept. We kinda got him a little late, and its really hard to justify keeping him, even on the PS, with is his lack of action.

Its not like PS is a high risk position, and keeping him there for a year wouldnt hurt and could pay off. Same thing with Barnes since we need a center for next year and he could flash some ability.

I know, I just think we're already stacked with pass rushers, and don't think we need another one on the PS. McClellan already has that spot as the PS pass rusher. McAdoo would be a bit of overkill imo. Maybe if he starts showing something in the last game, then yeah. But he hasn't done enough to warrant that yet. But I do realize he just got with the team.

There is zero % chance Cantwell makes the team. They haven't given him any snaps and with the way Joe has been durable. They'd rather go with just two QBs.

I think one will surely be filled by Tim Barnes as depth at C. I also think Ayanbadajio (sp?) will make it

Yeah I just realized I forgot Ayanbadejo and Jah Reid, so I'd get rid of Brown and Burgess in their place

As for Barnes, I think the team will go with Mattison at backup C. He's done pretty well this preseason

The WR Chart is kind of not right too me....
1.Boldin
2.Evans
3.Doss/Reed
4.Smith
5.Williams

And I think Kris Wilson will make the 3rd spot on the TE Starting team.. but overall you are right....

With respect to the 53-man roster, who is going to be needed and kept to play on our special teams units now that kickoffs could typically be touch backs? Could Parmele, Lawrence, Allen, and Marcus Smith not be cut because of their role on special teams?
