Orioles Pitcher Mike Flanagan Dead

20 posts in this topic

This is sad and extremely odd..what the news is saying, he committed suicide because he was despondent over the perceived notion from fans that he was a reason the O's suck so bad....maybe I'm wording it wrong

It's important to note that WBAL's report is speculation. Many media outlets, including WNST and some of the Baltimore Sun's columnists and writers, are criticizing WBAL for reporting suicide as the factual cause of death when there's been no proper indication as to the cause of death, or if his standing with some Orioles fans even had anything to do with it.

Very sad. He was a great O

He was an apparent reader of the orioles hangout, so he was very aware of some criticisms, but I hope to God that wasn't the reason why he did what he did

As close as Flanny remained with his former teammates, such as Dempsey, Palmer, and the Ripkens, I find it strange that he would commit suicide on Cal's birthday.

That's why we allow criticism but not personal attacks on Ravens staff, coaches, and players, and we don't tolerate personal attacks on fellow members at all.

Cyber-bullying and instances where people take what they read too seriously, is a problem that too many people ignore. Anonymity behind a keyboard doesn't grant anyone the right to needlessly disparage just for selfish gains.

Some people would have to deal with that for a long time. Of course, those same critics are acting like they care after some of the hateful stuff they spouted off about him.

You never know, none of us knows what it would feel like it it felt like an ENTIRE community blamed them for the O's organization not being so good....I hope not but maybe it was a burden to big to bare..

thats pretty messed up to think about, RIP Mike

I'm sure there wasn't any personal attacks, but mike loved the O's very deeply, and those same criticisms of his time as a gm mightve given him a hardtime (again, all of this is pure speculation)

Did anyone blame Flanagan for the Orioles being bad? I know I put all my blame on Angelos for running the ship into the ground and I'm pretty sure people blame him over Mcphail, Flanagan, or any of the previous owners.

I just think that if it was suicide that there is a lot more to it than baseball. Like something personal in his life. Just cant believe he would take such a cowardice action over a perception he got from fans....all the fans I know loved the dude.

It's still so hard to believe that I just heard him cover an Os game a couple nights ago. Just the way the found him (body on a trail somehow equals suicide?) is odd. I'm anxious to hear the details about what really happened.

Exactly. Everyone knows Angelos is the problem.

We should wait to find out the cause of death before speculating.

The medical examiner has ruled that Mike Flanagan's cause of death was suicide by way of a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head.

According to a report, Flanagan's wife spoke to police and said that Flanagan seemed to be upset about financial issues.
